Actually...no...for all the taxes we pay we have NOTHING to show for it...at least you guys get socialized health care and decent pension...where our health system is way out of control now and we're running out of money for pension....

And by the way...with us...cigs and fuel is true...but for some reason booze is ok...Cigarettes kill...and fuel pollutes...but apparently booze is harmless...

Yes, but work out how much more the cigs and fuel are over here. That's what I meant.
And by the time I get to retirement age, there'll be no money left in the pot for my generation. That's why it's imperitive that people of my age sort themselves out a private pension scheme. We do have the NHS, though, which despite its flaws is a God-send.

you've misinterpreted me again. Yes, the US uses more fuel, but our fuel COSTS MORE. As in HIGHER PRICE. it's currently just under £5 a gallon, whereas in the States it's $2.90 or thereabouts. At the current exchange rate, this means that we pay almost THREE TIMES AS MUCH per gallon than you do. Now do you see what I mean? This is why we can't all afford the gas-guzzling SUV's that you guys love. It's not economically viable for anyone who's not in the higher wage brackets.

by the way, the NHS is the National Health Service.

The fuel here now, unfortunately, is close to $4.- per gallon...

And with all this...there are STILL more SUV's on the road...weird...I drive Prius...so...on the other hand...I nearly drowned in flooding resulted from heavy rains yesterday with my Prius ...and while I was driving my economical car...I was chanting...

Next time...SUV...next time...SUV...

If you live in NY...you can get away without car...anywhere else in the States...you can't survive...the public transportation system is not developed anywhere but in NYC...so...there is no choice...even if you have to drive a jalopy...you still have to drive...

$4 is still only about £2. And as far as your Prius is concerned - it's not as green as you'd think. You'd be far better off with a small turbo-diesel such as the VW Lupo that will do 75+ to the gallon. The US never seemed to get the grasp that diesel is more economical than petrol, and the Prius is an example of a car that even though its intentions are honest, is very expensive and not nearly as economical as it's made out to be. the first generation could manage 51 to the gallon. Most modern deisels do 60+

Although price wise it's true...you have to compare apples to apples...i.e. cost of living and salaries...

Our rent/mortgage takes about 3 weeks of our monthly salary...and about one week for EVERYTHING else...nothing is easy...

We don't have VW Lupo and I don't think I've ever even seen it...our VW are VERY expensive...where as Prius...not so much...

And try to find diesel station here...good luck!!! The only car running on diesel here as far as I know is some old Mercedes models...otherwise...we just don't have those...

Hell...our President has interest in oil...do you think we will be running electric cars soon???

Lupo was just an example, there are other small cars that are very economical. Every mass-manufacturer will have a diesel version of its most popular cars. Current Ford diesel engines are excellent. But the reason the Diesel isn't widely available is the same as I stated before. In a country where oil is cheap (and despite your protests, it is) then there's no call for it. Diesels now make up a huge proportion of car sales in the UK. This is because for the same cost as petrol (or thereabouts) you get far more miles to the gallon. It doesn't take Einstein to work out that in the long run you're 'quids-in', as we Brits might or might not say :)

It is very difficult to persuade a country that is used to huge V8's that give tiny horsepower, and even less fuel efficiency, that small cars are the way forward. The Prius was the first step in the right direction, so hopefully the tide is turning.

I honestly don't know much about cars to have an intelligent conversation with...I am a woman after all...:lmao:

However driving through the fecking rivers here yesterday...I was praying for deliverance and seriously thinking with longing about SUVs...it's not even about efficiency...we get floods and snow storms all the time...and in America...business is business...most businesses stay open in bad weather...and as before I wouldn't have EVER considered SUV...having this car only for a year now...I am seriously thinking about my safety in the future...

VERY interesting discussion, there were many points I'd like to add my two cents, but dont wanna drag this thread back, so just my two essential thoughts:

If you see Zina's thoughts about SUV's, these might be the general thoughts of most Americans (I assume), so you dont have to wonder why the US is the main consumer of oil/producer of greenhouse gasses (if you call it that).

When the socialists with Schröder took the government here, back in 1998, they declared their aims to make Germany more healthy, with increasing tax on cigarrets and fuel. After a few years, it showed an impact, people smoked less and drove less. Only problem: Government complained that the economy had to suffer from less tax income, and told people to drive and smoke more.

That shows that after all it's just about money.
(sorry for bad grammar, quite busy here and somewhere else with my thoughts)

Well, it's kinda...

This is a theme song from the old Spider Man...

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman

So when Simpson sings this song...he kinda walks the pig over the ceiling like a Spiderman would walk and sings...

Spiderpig, Spiderpig...
Does whatever the Spiderpig does...

Because...whoever heard of spiderpig...and what is it exactly that spiderpig does???

To Americans this is funny...

I'm pretty sure an iceberg is colder, as icecubes usually have the temperature of the freezer (~-2 to -3°C) and if an iceberg had that temperature in the ocean, which is of course warmer than 0°C, it'd either be melting very quickly or woulnt even have reached the size it has.

Most icebergs splittled from Arctica or Antarctica, eg are show fallen over centuries, pressed together to ice, and if the iceberg ice has been covered with tons of other ice over centuries it'd surely be quite cold, in any case colder than -3°C

I'm just too smart for this world :))

Going back to the question raised about what's colder, an ice cube or an ice berg ...

It all depends. If the ice berg is pure water, then it's the same at the point of freezing zero degrees centigrade.

However. If the ice berg is made up of frozen sea water, which has an average salinity of 35 parts per thousand of salt, then at the point of freezing the iceberg is colder, since averagely saline sea water freezes at -2 degrees centigrade.

Of course the other issue is what tenperature each is stored at ... if the icecube is in a freezer which is at -10 degrees centigrade and the iceberg is at zero, then the ice cube is colder! Basically there are too many unknowns in the original question.

Tomorrow's science lesson will involve jumping on a moving train or light speed ... :))

BUT, an iceberg always consists of pure water, no salt.
- otherwise it wouldnt swim
- if it has been part of arctica/antarctica, it was fallen snow in the first place and that's pure water anyway
- it it froze in the ocean, the salt doesnt get frozen WITH the water, just the water freezes, the salt, erm.....sinnks.

Depends on where the iceberg was formed ... if it's come from a glacier then the chances are it's predominantely made from "fresh" water. If it comes from an ice shelf then it's a mixture of fresh and sea water. Even a glacial iceberg will contain some frozen saline water though.

back on topic :p

I think that saline water loses all it's salt at the freezing process. At least that's what I read somewhere years ago.

I'm quite confused now

Which means...GET OFF THIS TOPIC ALREADY!!!

Us simple humans and aliens got our minds boggled with this...

As sea water reaches freezing point, the salt in the solution is "rejected", hoewever this results in denser "fresh" water being created. This denser water sinks through the warmer salt water below it, with more salt water therefore being present at the surface of the sea. As a result when the solid ice is formed it is a mixture of fresh water and sea water ... ie a less saline solution, but not all of the salt if "rejected" throught the ice formation process.
