WHAT MUSIC DID YOU GROW UP ON...

Thought i'd start this thread because apart from being a Meat Loaf Fan, We all had to start somewhere with our musical journey. well I grew up on Motown and soul, I remeber at a young age, listening to Barry White's lp "Can't Get Enough" when my dad put it on, and i loved it, the others artists my dad and mum played were as follows

Jimmy Helms/The Defonics/Stylistics/The Drifters/Otis Redding/Jimmy Ruffin/Isley Brothers etc

My Best album I really loved was an Ronco Complilation LP called "Black Explosion", still have the album in excelleny condition. but do not play it as now have all the tracks on cd (took me a long time to find all tracks, as some obscure).

When in secondary school in 1981 - 1987, Everyone was into Chaka Khan, Duran, Duran and Wham, fair enough!!! (each to their own). I was the outcast there, listened to MEAT LOAF, everyone else thought i was weird because I didnt listen to there stuff - (oh well, so what), ever since 1981 then I've been in fan!!!

I do listen to other artists from All About Eve to Joe Cocker, Lagwagon to OMD and from Chris Rea to ZZ Top

But once in a while I go back to where it all started - to 70's black soul, hey just seen Matalan advert and the music that was playing was one of my childhood songs grew up with (The Delfonics - I didn't I blow your mind this time)

Oohh what a good thread!

From the age of 7 it's been Meat Loaf, but before that, all I can raelly remember is my Dad's country music ( about one of the only things he educated me well on! ) He was a big fan of Kenny Rogers and from that I grew to love his stuff too, he'd definately be the one I'd choose if I had to put a soundtrack to my growing up

I was heavily influenced by both my brothers musical tastes when I was growing up, hence I was weaned on a diet of The Stones, The Faces, Springsteen, The Clash, Lindisfarne and Southside Johnny. Thankfully I wasn't influenced by my sisters taste in the Osmonds

I grew up on Elvis (my mom's influence) and proceeded to direct myself to Bobby Sherman, the Osmonds (most specifically Donny) and Shaun Cassidy. Then I discovered the other world of Rock and Roll and since I came of age during the 80's it was a time of punk rock, glam hair bands and heavy metal

My mum loved listening to Mario Lanza and the guy who sings "The Desert Song" so that was the background track of my young life. I think she got her first grey hair when I brought home BOOH and played it on my little, red bacolite, mono, record player; turned up full blast. Not loud by todays standards but loud enough at the time.

Erm like every type of music there is, except classical and I guess that's why I don't really like it now.

My Padre is into rock, metal and that sort of music whereas, my mum is into R'n'B and Soul. My cousins who I spent a lot of time with are into Garage, Grime and Techno etc... so like a real mix of music.

He's been there when I've been down and has helped me through some really tough times with his music.

As a small child, a lot of country music. Then as a teenager of the 70's and.. Disco < gag. I took another route, when a lot of people were listening to that, and discovered Meat Loaf, Kiss, Queen, Alice Cooper, The Eagles, Dr. Hook, CCR, Elvis ect.

Today, my taste in music is anything, in any genre, I find interesting.

every kind of rock music: he has got a very large LP collection
and one of my earliest childhood memories is listening to the opening/speech part of hot summer night (I was born in 1975)

Meat was the first "artist" I was ever into.

Until then there were just songs.

Two big staples were The House Of The Rising Sun, and Stand By Me.

Over the years my tastes expanded a lot.

I listened to everything from opera to rock, from blues to show tunes.

Was never into rap or house music or anything like that though, and I HATED bands like Take That with a passion.

These my tastes have narrowed again, and my staples are Meat, Joe Cocker, Roy Orbison, and Tanz Der Vampire.

Unless the old brain sends up a flair from the vaults and I listed to a song I haven't heard in ages

as a small child: german folk music, called "Schlager", about the uncoolest music you could ever imagine, my parents listened to it and there were 2 or 3 compilations I really liked as a kid. Weird, I know

about 10-13, I liked (and please dont kill me for that) Eminem

I liked it because it was so intensive and emotional, you see, although I listened to crap, I was already on the right way

Now, Meat, of course and I grow an interest for musicals.

I actually don't think they is anything wrong with liking Eminem, although more his earlier albums as his newer ones are more commercialised.

We have these two 60s and 70s tapes, I grew up on them. Some songs I can remember:
Night Has a Thousand Eyes
No Milk Today (love this one!)
Da Do Run Run
Sixteen Candles
Lets Twist Again

Also the Eurythmics, like a lot of their songs (even though I thought Annie Lennox was a man when I was about 5!

I know better now!), and Dave Stewart is from Sunderland!

Since '93 it was BatII, even though I didn't know it at the time, knew AFL though.

Few years later I'm ashamed to admit it was when all the pop came into being I used to follow that, (btw, speaking of the Osmonds, if someone had told me they sang Love Me For A Reason I might have got one of their tapes, but no, went and got a boysone one!

) but not long after wanted something bigger, better and louder to listen to, but had no idea where to start as didn't have computer or internet. Couple of weeks later Mam said 'lets listen to Meat Loaf (Bat II) on the way to our caravan'! It was so much more than I would have settled for, it was just magnificent!

I've got a really eclectic taste in music, I grew up listening to Motown, 60's, Cliff Richard and old Country and Western, courtesy of my mum, and my ex-step-dad had a tape called 'Hooked on Classics' which was sort of classical music for the plebs. From this, I've gotten into classical music in a big way, and have a large collection. I rebelled against the constant diet of Cliff, and got into rock - Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, but would still go for some Motown or 60's stuff every now and then.

Now it's Meat, alternative music like The Killers, Razorlight, Sandi Thom, Alanis Morrisette, K.T. Tunstall... in fact, I'll pretty much listen to anything except Jazz (although I do a like a bit of Nina Simone) and 70's Glam Rock, and I've never been into opera. Don't mind the musicals though, my mate has the soundtrack to 'Passion' which is worth a listen, and one of my favourites was and still is Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.

Current favourite album? Bat III of course... Current favourite non-Meat album? Nickelback - Silver Side Up

I was heavily influenced by Dad's choices of Meat loaf, Queen and people like Phil Collins, The police and what is generally classed as sot-rock.

Mum got me hooked on country music - at the moment more modern stuff than classic, think Kenny Chesne, Toby keith, Martina mcBride, Gretchen Wilson, and of course the fabulous Alan Jackson) Mum also got me into musicals, both the classic wes ent/broadway hits and some of the lesser well known ones like 3 steps to heaven and stuff.

And thanks to my big sister a lot of 80's pop. Hands up anyone else who knows all the words to "Nothings gonna change my love for you"

Whenever we were in the car, they always had classic gold or Magic 828 on the radio which led to liking a lot of 60's & 70's stuff like Cliff (although he is 50's, 60's 70's 80's 90's & 00's - new album in the shops now folks!!)

I grew up on a solid diet of Gilbert and Sullivan, Nelson Eddy and Mario Lanza.
Then my big sister introduced me to Ricky Nelson, Brenda Lee, Fabian, etc. etc.
There followed Elvis, Bill Haley, etc.
In my early teens, The Beatles, until Meat Loaf "saved" me from the world of pop.
Now my musical taste is eclectic.
I bought Medicine Woman III on the same day I bought Bat Out of Hell III, much to the astonishment of the record store owner.
