Default 67. Martha

This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic.
Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!!

Martha (8)

Typical Tom Waits lyrics. A little love story. I love this fine and soft melody. Did you hear the original version by Tom Waits. Very very strange. His voice is fantastic.
Meat's version? Yeah, good!!!

Has Meat ever performed in concert???

My score: 8

Average: 7.78 (124.5/16)

Meat never performed this song in concert. It's a good song. Better than the Tom Waits version.

My score: 7

this, i don't understand -

on "martha", and on "lost boys and golden girls" on the "back into hell" album, why don't the band play? i mean, sure, it's a good song, but they both would be better with the actual band, instead off synthesised instruments etc...i don't understand why they would intentionally do this.

This is one of the few songs I don't like very much.
Hardly ever play it, find it a little 'boring'.

5/10

I never liked this one. Could be lots of emotion expressed here but it misses by a mile for me.
3/10 The only way it rates a three is strong ML voice!

Now I may not normally listen to a song like this, especially by that Tom guy. But this song, is really amazing. Sure its soft, but that doesn't make it bad. The most important reason, why I love this song soo much. Is Meat's voice!!! He takes BIG leaps, I love his BIG voice. He really impresses me in this song. The music is beautiful. I think I hear piano, and its wonderful!! And just when I thought the BIG voice is as big as it gets in a slow song, Meat proves me wrong with WHERE ANGELS SING.

Martha MEAT LOAF 8.5\10
Original ??\10 don't know don't care, never heard, and I probably never will, but all I know is Meat, is the ultimate singer for it!!!!
And I say that, being more than a fan. But for someone who knows good music.

Guess for someone my age (24) you have to use some imagination to put yourself in this song but if you can (and deal with some harsh, romantic, stark realities of life) I think its got a great sentiment.

Took some getting used to hearing Meat Loaf sing this but now I really like it, its thought provoking. Could be a signature to a nice matinee movie.

7/10

I love this song- 10
I'm a big Tom Waits fan, but I love Meat Loaf's version- I used it in a choreography I made in university.

My concept of the piece, was to have a man remembering his first love in an idylllic light- seeing her in all the old movie stars- Casablanca etc.
I wanted to make it clear to the audience that she was a memory- and I chose to show this by having the dancer appear as though she were a black and white, celluloid image.

Well- the piece started with a gentleman in hat and jacket walking into the theatre (after the audience was seated) and sitting in the front row (we had a seat reserved) when the music starts, a girl comes unto the stage and begins a solo dance. The girl is costmed and made-up to look like a black and white image- like in a film. (she had a long, black ball dress on, had pitch black hair, and we put greyish makeup on her skin-with a soft lighting effect, it really looked like she was black and white!

About halfway through the dance, when the music begins to really swell- the man gets up out of his seat, and joins the woman onstage- first waltzing with her, followed by a series of lifts whereby he is holding her in sort of a child-like poses in his arms.

The piece ends with her walking off stage slowly, and the man smiling after her as the lights go down.

I don't know if I've described this well- can you sort of picture what I mean?

a sad song.....got an emotional background I cant really describe with words.

Very "controlled" singing, with clear and straight notes, and then the part "And I was always so impulsive, I GUESS THAT I STILL AM", still controlled, but stronger.
Fits perfetcly to the song
