I believe it's supposed to parody "Left In The Dark"

For an album that takes the pi$$ out of Lady Gaga, The White Stripes and other modern acts. I can't believe he'd parody a 30 year old song, the last known version of which was released 16 years ago.

It's not the lyrics, it's the style. The background tune and rhythm is similar to Left In The Dark. Also I feel the speeding up is reminiscent of One More Kiss. There are a couple other songs in there too but I can't put my finger on them.
ETA: I do hear it but I'm not the one that made the song or the connections. I took the info as you can see from the Wikki. |

Just ask Wario There is small resemblance to Meat's style in the music, but it's so vague that i'd say it was more a nod to the genre than to any particular artist. |

I'm sorry you don't hear it. I do and very clearly, but then again, I may listen to too much Meat.

My guess is it might become clear once the video is released. If we see Al in the iconic BOOH get up, fair enough. The backing vocals are probably the Meatiest part imo.

I dare say a lot of people enjoy this song. I didn't think it was that bad myself. As you say, it's a parody of the style, of the genre, and without being a parody of a certain song or references to a certain artist, that's what you're left with. A lot of Weird Al's parodies are very much on the nose (Amish Paradise, Fat, Like A Surgeon, The Saga Begins, ebay) and I think if he was going to target Meat for parody it would be much less subtle. But if it makes you happier to think of it as a Meat parody, fine, nobody is going to stop you, just don't get so wound up because a couple of people think otherwise. |

I enjoyed it! I could definitely hear the similarity in style, especially in the first few notes with the keyboard. Can't quite place the songs - can hear several in there. I hear a little of I'd Do Anything For Love. Call me crazy, but even hear a little bit of Read Em & Weep in there, especially with the tempo. It will take several listenings to make an ID.

Not 2 minutes before I was going to post, sorry I don't see "Left In The Dark" at all in this.....my 5 1/2 year old says to me, mommy that's Meat Loaf with a different voice. So, I laughed and had to listen again.
Ok I jumped the gun on first listen....I hear a touch of Objects. But I'm too busy right now to really over analyze. |

Its probably just a parody, not on the song, but how meat sings his songs. its a good tune.

No one says it is per se a Meat Loaf parody. It's obviously a wink to Jim Steinman; lots of layered backing vocals, piano centered, dynamics, even the Total Eclipse style castanets. Especially around 4.15 (the backing vocals outtro), very Steinmany in my opinion.
A lot of Weird Al "originals" like this are often done in a style of a band / a type of music etc. This one could be considered Steinman indeed. No way is it a direct "parody" of Left in the Dark. Weird Al is just like Meat Loaf. You either love it or hate it. I love it. |

I can easily hear Left in the Dark in the keyboard at the start, although I VERY highly doubt it's intentional and I probably wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't have pointed it out. The ending actually reminds me of the ending of I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back a bit o.0 AND, fun fact, it also uses a very similar chord progression (3 out of 4 chords) to what Steinman uses in practically every song in places. So that could be why it's so similar :)
Very Meat-ish :) |

I've tracked them down on youtube, the first one features a Wario wannabe, but it's the only one up there. You can hear the song though. Embedding has been disabled for TFTR&R, so i've posted a direct link.
