.....here's a poll for UK residents!

I am sitting here with my laptop browsing through possible colleges/universities in Britain for me to study at during my semester abroad.

But one website is like the other to me and I thought I'd give it a try and ask you people for opinions about colleges. I know this is as subjective as it gets and I won't jump on a plane tomorrow to knock on the doors of the winning college

No, I just thought this might be interesting. Cause I would think universities often have a certain reputation, be it good or bad, and who knows, maybe some of you have some first/second/third hand experiences to share.
Yep, that's it.

Here are my possible choices:

Anglia Ruskin University
University of Sunderland
Sheffield Hallam University
European University in London
Newcastle University
Aberystwyth University

Oh, and feel free to advertise the college yourself went to if you want.

Sheffield, London and Newcastle are probably the most interesting in terms of location. However, i have never visited any of those establishments.

I went to Ringwood 6th form in Ringwood, Hampshire and had a wonderful time with great teachers and some awesome friends that I have stayed mates with to this day. I got some good A-level grades, though I never went on to use them as I work in law enforcement. Still, can't win them all!!

University of Glasgow of course! Great uni and top night life student city.

It depends on so much, as Lucy says the course makes a great difference.

Of the choices you listed I've heard good things about either Sheffield Hallam or Newcastle.

Anglia is in Norwich isn't it? Which is the arse end of nowhere so I'd give that one a wide berth, and studying English in Wales just doesn't sound right (sorry Sean!) so that rules out Aberystwyth University!

And going off topic a little bit ... Slice you must have been drinking under age (and legally for a year or two) in and around Ringwood when I lived in that area. You probably got diapproving looks from me and my mates when you tried to get served

Sheffield's the only one you've mentioned that's ranked min the top 20 for English studies. Leeds is rated higher, and Durham is the top ranked. Sheffield and Leeds are lively cities. Sheffield has just rebuilt a huge uni hall of residence, and will have another completed by next intake, both in a good residential area but only a couple of miles from the city centre, and there are several new appartment blocks for students in the city centre. Not sure if you're referring to the old polytechnic or Sheffield University? If it's the old pokly, that has a good reputation even though it isn't ranked in the top 20. Sheffield's big enough to offer plenty of clubs, cafes, eating places etc without being so large it takes forever to find your way round.

I'd avoid Norwich too .. lol

Aber is in the middle of nowhere; go for Bristol it's got two great Uni's UWE (University West of England) and also Bristol University

I voted for the university in London because I heard it's supposed to be amazing, so I might aswell have pressed something. I'm sure you will settle into any of them.

especially with all of us at a Meat Loaf concert...

Sheffield is big enough without being daunting, Lincoln (where I went to) is a nice small town and the University is central to the area...it's basically wherever you'd feel most comfortable.

Me neither

All I can find is the name Sheffield Hallam University.

Can't access the Durham website at the moment but what wikipedia told me sounded like a very good university.

Ireland would for several reasons be lovely but apparently none of the german exchange programmes work with an irish college and from what I understood so far, it's quite complicated to set up everything yourself.

Durham is good, but as a small city it's at the higher end for student living costs, lovely place, but pricier than others (with London obviously being at the very top).

Yeah as a rule all the Universities that aren't "City Of..." are all the old Polys...Sheffield Hallam, UCE, Leeds Met etc

I had a friend who went to Sheffield Uni - so can't say much about Sheffield Hallam, but Sheffield is a good student city!

Aberystwyth was one of the 6 I applied to when I was applying to Uni. I'm sure it depends on the subject but it seems a lovely uni, very welcoming. The downside was it really was in the middle of nowhere - maybe not quite the same student lifestyle as some of the universities in bigger cities.

I went to Lancaster btw ... fab place in my opinion though whether the uni is to be recommended depends on the subject. I know some with good experiences and others with bad.

Exactly, the best place to learn English is Ireland. We had and still have some of the best writers in the world to be fair. We can speak the English language better than the English themselves.

I think Trinity College would suit you Bubbles or UCD maybe!!!!

When I was looking at unis, apart from going with those which actually did my chosen subjects, I had a book someone leant me which was the Universities from the student point of view, with info on everything from halls, local area, shopping, lectures, lecturers, to the price of a pint. I'm sure there must be something similar online so if I come across something like that later (I'm on my phone right now) I'll post the link

Sheffield Hallam is the old poly

I did the first 2/3 of my degree at Leeds then had to transfer to Manchester to finish it.
Leeds was really good Manchester significantly less so and Leeds regularly features in the list for best student satisfaction and results
