Default Pearl Talks About Dad

My dad Meat Loaf and me

Paul Taylor
18/10/2007

MOST children's first memories of going in front of an audience revolve around the school nativity play. But as the daughter of one of the most recognisable figures in rock, Pearl Aday's first performance is the stuff of which dreams - or possibly nightmares - are made.

"It was when I was about four at a sold-out show in Wembley Arena," recalls Pearl, daughter of Meat Loaf.

"He used to sing with different coloured scarves for each song and it was my job to bring them out to him in between songs. I remember getting all dressed up and not really understanding what was out there except that I could see dad from the side of the stage.

"I walked out and I heard the crowd react. I looked up and it was a bit overwhelming and scary. But the whole audience was so accepting, I was first terrified and then dad was picking me up."

Pearl was also four when Marvin 'Meat Loaf' Aday unleashed Bat Out Of Hell, an epic piece of quasi-Wagnerian rock which became one of the biggest-selling albums of all time, shifting 34m copies worldwide. Growing up in rock 'n' roll central, was she not tempted to rebel by, say, becoming an accountant?

"My parents were so cool. I always wanted to be a part of whatever they were doing," she says. "I grew up with rock `n' roll playing in the house, rock `n' roll playing on stage. Dad IS rock `n' roll. It's in my blood. It's part of me. I couldn't rebel against it. I didn't want to."

So, though Pearl played cello in her high school orchestra for nine years, in 1993 she joined the family `firm'.

"He asked me if I'd sing with him on stage," she says. "I was a freshman in college and he started me off singing at the side of the stage. I think it was Madison Square Garden in New York."

So for the next nine years, Pearl sang with the band. Did she ever get to do any of the famous Meat Loaf duets?

"That would be weird!" she recoils. "Patti Russo did all the duets like Paradise By The Dashboard Light. I think it would be illegal for me to sing that with my dad."

Selected

In 2000, Pearl was also selected as a backing singer for Mötley Crüe's tour.

"I was a Crüe Slut," she says, revelling in the un-PC job description. "It was a blast. I was a massive Mötley Crüe fan growing up and I used to save my allowance to buy posters and magazines they were in. Touring with them, singing and dancing, every night I was saying 'Wow!'"

For the last four years, though, Pearl has been ploughing her own musical furrow after hooking up with a band called Mother Superior and cutting their teeth on the Los Angeles scene. Also in the band is Pearl's fiancé Scott Ian, founder member of heavy metal veterans Anthrax. Her band plays support to Meat Loaf at the M.E.N. Arena on November 4.

"It's straight-up rock 'n' roll," she says. "I can waver a little bit - bluesy or southern rock - but to me it's all rock 'n' roll."

As for her famous dad - who, like Pearl, lives in LA - he is still stomping across concert stages like an angry bull at the grand old age of 60. But he is much slimmed-down in recent years and, off stage, nothing like his rampaging stage persona.

"At home, he likes computer baseball, he likes his shows and he's a pretty mellow guy. If you want to have a mellow night, you can go to the movies with dad, then early to bed. He's very cautious about his voice," says Pearl.

"He's definitely very sensible now. But his band{hellip} they're still partying."

Meat Loaf, supported by Pearl, plays the M.E.N. Arena again on Sunday, November 4. Call the Box Office on 0870 060 1768 to book or click here .

Don't suppose anyone found out whether Pearl is supporting Meat at Glasgow or whether it ws omitted by mistake from the poster?

I didn't get a part about saving pennies to buy magazines where parents were featured...

You can get them a dime a dozen from a publisher if you're featured...
