Thanks for the warning, I'll keep it in mind. I'm always getting these weird requests on facebook and used to just accept them but now just ignore them, don't understand half of them.

I've had a fair few mails off people saying random stuff like "you've been spotted in this vid" etc, and I'd been warned before about opening them.
I generally don't do the apps thing, so sorry to all of you that sent me random stuff cos I don't reply to anything other than a message, wall post or status comment to be honest. Although I've noticed that in the last few days I'm not getting any email notifications for anything anymore. I got a message from FB today saying "Unfortunately, the settings that control which email notifications get sent to you were lost. We're sorry for the inconvenience. To reset your email notification settings, go to: blah blah..." which I thought was a bit weird, and made me a little aprehensive that it was a phishing thing. To be honest, I'm sort of glad that I don't get a zillion emails saying "so and so has thrown a banana/thong/gorilla or whatever at you..." each day

You'd be surprised! Get a virus on your PC these days and it's personal data that's being gathered, names, addresses, bank details, credit card numbers etc. It pays to be very careful!

OK just gone through ALL my applications, some of which I don't even recall accepting , but it's been minimised and I will probably decline new requests from now on so don't be disheartened if I decline.

See, that's the thing...I didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings by declining the requests...some I did...most I didn't...if we all agree now that we won't feel bad by no accepting requests except for games and such we all should be ok with each other...

this virus is very clever....looks like it's replying to it's own posts via other infected people, but uses both their first names in the message so you think it's ok to open it...

Emma's post above made me think of something...she mentioned applications she doesn't remember adding. I found at least one that I KNOW I couldn't have POSSIBLY added...it piggy backed on some other application I allowed...

Some simple Facebook security rules (which could actually be applied to any online site:

1) Don't use your prime email address as your facebook logon id.
Many applications will or can access your profile information to be able to send you emails. Using the same email address for facebook as you use for ebay, paypal, internet banking etc is leaving the door open for ID theft and online fraud. It's easy enough to set up another hotmail address or similar for these sorts of sites, keeping your main address for the useful stuff.

2) Don't use the same password for Facebook as you do for other more important sites
Same reasons as above, if something can steal or change your password, they'll start trying to log into other sites (eg paypal etc) using the stolen email address and if they're succesful they'll spend your money.

3) Don't have an obvious password.
Pretty obvious really. But you'd be surprised how many people have "password" as their password. changing some letters for numbers is good ... "me4tl04f" is better than "meatloaf", but it's not as good (that is it's easier to guess) as the "consonant vowel consonant number consonant vowel consonant number" combination (eg cog3wet7) for even more obscurity remove the first number and double it (eg cogwet4mikdop9) that's virtually uncrackable, although harder to remember.

4) Change your password now and again.
Yes ok, so you've got to try and remember it, but it's an added measure, certainly if you think there's something dodgy going on then change all your passwords, and never store them on your PC .. .that is never let IE or Firefox autocomplete your logins.
