Default Untitled Meat Loaf Fan Recording Project: The official thread

Alright, let's start the show!

First of all, my original ambitious plan of recording every single song from every single album is unrealistic. So...I'm gonna go with a compilation. 14 tracks of pure Loaf, recorded by the fans in appreciation of his work over the years. The collective head men and women at MLUKFC will hopefully present Meat with a copy so he can enjoy our efforts at saying thank you.

CRITERIA: I don't just want people who can sing and make great tracks. I want people who will clearly be making an ass of themselves, but the effort will come from the heart, and that's what I think Meat would appreciate most. The maximum amount per submission is three songs, not all of which will be included on the final project. Those whose songs are included will receive an advance copy of the CD. No leaks or your tracks will be removed and replaced with other submissions!

Publicly, Meat doesn't profess to like most of his less heard work, but we're looking for that material which rarely gets covered, and perhaps in a new inventive style. Do BBIS tracks in a rock style. Do a techno remix version of "I'd Lie for You." A horrid flamenco rendition of "Took the Words." Show that Meat's work adapts to any style, and that the rarer tracks deserve another listen.

Anyone with submissions, direct them to second.eagle(at)gmail(dot)com by October 1. From there, myself (and of course the MLUKFC mods if they so desire) will choose the fourteen tracks for the final album, and then save the rest for next year's effort, along with any new submissions that come along.

Addendum:

All making submissions must have their songs chosen and presented to the same email address before August 21. At that time, we give them the go-ahead to record for the project. Based on popularity of certain song choices, you may be asked to reconsider one or more of your three options.

Those rules seem a little harsh to me, and I dont think you'll get a lot of participiants that way.
This "project" is still in the discussion state, and it's way too early for plans like that.

Besides, not everyone has the technical equipment to record, let alone produce a track like that.

I hope the plan isn't to sell copies of the CD, that would open up far more trouble than it's worth.

A computer with a microphone is what they did on Rockman with some fantastic results. I think it's about the quality of the effort put in rather than the clarity of sound that comes out.

If you go to Daveake's most excellent site VaultsOfHeaven.com you can find them there.

maybe, but not everyboby has the ability and technical understanding to work with mixing programmes and mix their own song.
Thats why I think Jackos way is not the best and wont get a lot of reaction.

Who's talking about mixing songs? Wacko gave an example not an order.

I think you should be able to go for either recording back tracks if you want...or recording it as basic as possible, literally an instrument and a vocal into a mic. As RJ says not everyone has access to the software to record this kind of thing or doesn't know how to use it.

I agree a deadline is a good idea...but should we not have more then 14 songs? i mean there's more then 14 people who would be interested in this and personally i think the songs that are more obscure then others would be better...as hey some prefer those above the big "hits" as such.

For me what I could do is work with the guys I'm with and see what can be done, but it would be very basic guitar and vocal and maybe a bass.

I think there needs to be some thought put into it though...because I'd want it to come across as being as good or better then rockman (even though I have yet to hear their versions)

Personally, I don't see the point of lots of the rules. Just give people a deadline, for contributing something that Meat has sung himself, and see what comes in. If it's 13 or 14 or 30 tracks doesn't matter. If the efforts are solo singer or with a full orchestra doesn't matter.

I think to follow the steps below would be a good way to start.

1) Start a roll call who would participate

2) let each of them post a list of the songs they would be interested in

3) after everybody sees what other people are planning to do, give them the possibility to change their choices

4) see who wants to use a backing track and who wants to use their own instruments

5) check who has the equipment and ability to 'produce' the tracks. (for example: would it be possible for somebody who isnt a tech freak to just record the vocals and have them mixed with the instruments by someone else)

if we actually get that far, we can see how to continue then...

An idea of just how good or not people need to be would be helpful. Are you thinking mainly pro or semi pro people and those who perform regularly anyway? Or can anyone have a try?

I'd say let's give anyone a try.
This isnt supposed to be a proper cover or tribute album, but something to show the fans' dedication to their idol.

I used to sing Meat Loaf songs with my old band, and would love to take a shot at this. It'd be particularly nice to collaborate online too.

Am I right in thinking that a copy of the finished CD will be sent to Meat, and then presumably be available for everyone else to download for free?

I am against strict rules too...if it is done for fun, entertainment and in order to create something special and not sell and/or promote the album...this needs to be a bit more relaxed...otherwise I felt for a moment like I am back in the Soviet Union during communist party meeting...

The funniest tracks for me would be the ones where the artist actually thinks they are good but sing like a strangled cat. I don't think asking people to make an 'ass of themselves' is going to create the same kind of affect.

Which version?

I like the quote re Jim's singing voice (I think it was Max Weinberg, but I'm not sure):

---- His singing voice resembles "I need to go to the toilet"

Downloading the tracks free would be okay and prob the best way as if you were to sell it, you would have go through all the legalalities - Copyright, Mechanical Liscence etc..... All this would equal MONEY!

Its an okay idea though, I guess like they did with a "Jim Steinman Fan CD"

Which is exactly why neither westlife or celine dion are invited to take part in this.

I was thinking to myself, and yes that's dangerous, that I'd really like to take a stab at Sailor to a siren but come up with something a bit different. Ger, the guy I recorded the last songs with for the demo, is always mentioning the song to me...so could be worth seeing what we'd come up with.

Let's throw all the names and suggestion in by email and then after the 21st, see who wants to do what and take it from there...at the end of it all it's hopefully going to be fun...cause there's no point in making if it's anything else.

Actually, would there be any reason why there couldn't be various versions of the same songs on it? I reckon people's interpretations are likely to be wildly different...

ok this isnt really something thats interesting me but why dont you just let everyone send their songs into the mlukfc staff and let the fanclub members or staff choose from there, why does there need to be a list to work from?? And if i were sending my song in i wouldnt want to send it to a random fan, would much rather send it to the fanclub staff. Just my thoughts is all
