Default Locked threads

Wasn't gonna post, but what the heck.....

Instead of locking threads and getting everyones backs up, by them feeling the freedom of speech has been taken away and maybe somehow they are to blame, Wouldn't it be better to find another solution? Only my thoughts here, but surely it would be better that the offending people be warned, temp ban or what ever (yes even If it is me at times) This would be better than stopping a whole conversation surely? I know a lot of things go off topic and sometimes to a great extent but when you have a conversation in real life, do you always stay on topic and can't divert at all off the subject? i know I for one do, and I probably do on here, but I'm sure it would mostly (hopefully ) get back on topic. Theres been so much bad feeling built up lately and I think locking the threads sometimes only adds to it.

Just my opinion :)

I know what you mean by that. During normal conversation I go off on a tangent and then suddenly go back to the original topic.

Let's just leave those decisions to the admin (R) and the mods, shall we?

This is site feedback, I'm giving my feedback, thats all, nothing more nothing less. The moderators surely would like to know how people feel?

We do indeed want feedback, and we listen, and speaking as a Mod who's still probably wearing his L Plates I'm especially interested, I want to make sure I get the balance right and minimise any mistakes and do my bit to help keep this a happy clappy cheery forum (not that I will make any mistakes of course, because after all I am perfect )

Can't you temporarily lock the thread and then unlock it in a couple of days? That way people would hopefully have calmed down and be able to post on topic or the thread would die a natural death.

Am going to send you my support on this, and it was brave to broach this subject at this time. :)

I can see the need for rules, it does make for a better environment... but in addition to warning and waiting a bit more time before closing down a thread, perhaps some guidelines on the art of polite debating?

Where there is a group of people in a community there is always going to be conflict... and conflict is not always something to run away from and squelched, at times it can be learned from, and even managed. There is nothing wrong with disagreeing, and many creative thoughts and ideas come from discussion and the sharing of varying opinions. And when in opposite corners in your beliefs, disagree with the view not the person.

Would be a boring world with all sugar and no spice....

Great post Deb.

I'm with you on this one. i too may have said something in the heat of the moment, not to an individual though, and if that was the case, couldn't an Admin or Mod PM you and let you know this is not acceptable. that way, we can reflect about what you have said. (Only my thoughts)

I too wondered if I had contributed to the locking of the threads.

If we lock a topic, there is a reason for that. There is no reason to discuss about this subject.

Yes, I did that on occasion and it worked. Well - most of the time that is.

If for some reason a thread get's locked, moved or probably edited - then this was done for a reason and in this case we don't want to see a discussion about it as it used to happen recently.

I'm pretty sure that number of locked threads will decrease soon.
If I'm not mistaken there's no thread that got locked today.
Go on.

he he... but you know, when things get heated, or fights start... humor is SO important. It takes the pressure away, makes us think about what is important and what's not... gets things into perspective.

And damn.... maybe we'll both get a warning for going off topic in this thread he he... But it would still be worth it if the message came across, not to get upset over a forum. Humor is such a powerfull "weapon" if you catch my drift.
Sweet dreams and don't let the bedbugs bite ya.
