Default The News Thread

Something that works well on another forum i'm a member of is a designated news thread for big international stories and small local stories alike.

If something in the news catches your attention, post and discuss it here

It would have been nice to start the thread with a good news story, but events dicrate otherwise at the moment

Explosion in Texas

Condolences to all those effected.

Is there such a thing these days?

That Texas explosion looked crazy. Also I think it showed how stupid people are trying to just film things instead of getting the hell away and worry about their and their family's safety. The guy was filming till it exploded and the little girl in the car just wanted to go. Looked terrifying.

Sorry to hear there were so many dead.

However I also wonder how a little town will get on its feet after that. If that is the main source of employment in the town a lot of people could be out of a job.

What I don't get about that is the firefighters had already been on the scene when it blew up? Why hadn't they evacuated everyone? Why were there still so many people there? This is a very sad event for sure but i think the fire service have a lot of questions to answer.

One of the big downsides of news and the internet these days .. so often people are focused more on getting a recording on their phone than either getting out of the way, or doing something useful!

Not long after reading that, it came on the news on TV she's apparently tried to kill herself

Article.

She's having a busy press day.

It's probably the press that helped her to get to that stage. Hope she can disappear from the lime light if she wishes to do that.

A career in acting probably not the best thing to do then

I was a bit surprised when I read she wanted to be an actress, considering her familys issues with being in the public eye to such an extent.

Another "sad" one I am afraid.

I have enormous respect for Stephen not just because I think he is a sublime entertainer but because by finding the strength to be open about his battle with bipolar disorder he is showing those who do not understand it that it is not something to be scared of, instead it is something to be understood like any other life long illness.

Sadly that doesn't look hopeful when the first thing her mother did was call the E Channel (Entertainment Tonight)

looks like her mother is more concerned about publicity than her daughter

I've recently found I quite like Stephen Fry, I don't know all that much about him, but I was suprised when I read that

In the UK he has reached the level of being classed as almost a national treasure.

Stephen has spoken at length before about his battle with bipolar disorder & his previous suicide attempts, He is also president of Mind http://www.mind.org.uk/ the UK's foremost mental health charity.

If you are fairly new to him I recommend watching Blackadder to see his various guises of Melchett & his "quiz" show QI that has probably the weirdest scoring system on the planet where points are awarded if an answer is interesting be it right or wrong & deducted if they are obvious or boring

James Gandolfini dies ages 51 in Italy.
Shocked and saddened to hear this

If Tony's dead, God better watch his ass
RIP.
