It seems like this would be the perfect time for a ML and Steinman comback

Very cute!

I'm not into football, so I didn't watch the game (only the Halftime show).

Anytime would be good for that. Unfortunately with all the money Jim has plus what he rakes in off royalties and these commercials he does not seem motivated to get off his Bat throne he had made. Anything not already laying around would take him at least a year.

we watched it and it is a great commercial. It had been airing all day of the super bowl. who gets the money from M&M's using the song, Meat or Jim?
Beyonce blew out the lights at the super bowl!

Jim... All of it.

Publishing and songwriting royalties are gold, especially for a song like AFL.

Perhaps he even produced some part of the track? It WAS pretty well done, it sounded great!

Yep it all goes to Jim. Writing even one really big hit song can have you set for life. I doubt Jim expended any energy on this beyond endorsing the check.

It seemed to be catching at the weekend as the lights also went out during Manchester United's match at Fulham.
And then my landing light blew.

Does Jim hold the publishing as well?

They didn't use Meat's recording, thus he doesn't get paid.

The NFL says no. Her stage ran on generators, not venue power.

I'm pretty sure that he holds all publishing rights for most of his music.

I mean, if he wouldn't sell his publishing rights to Celine Dion I'm not sure that he would sell them to anybody. Not to say that CD is anything special or bad, it's just that I've always gotten the impression that Jim protects his music like his children and having somebody else in control of it would kill him.

But I base this on absolutely nothing. For all I know he sold his publishing rights and we're about to have Justin Beiber remake 'Bad For Good'. Duet with Selena Gomez on 'Dance In My Pants.'

I hate to break it to you, but if Bieber wants to remake "Bad For Good", there's nothing Jim (or anybody) could do to stop him.

Scary, but true!

I want to hear "Stark Raving Love" and " Safe Sex" done again . Also, I really love " Dance in my pants" and would love to see it done again. Karla and Jim make me giggle watching the video.
So how could someone do one of his songs without his permission? Are they now public domain ( or whatever it is called), like folk songs?

No, not public domain. The songwriter gets to choose who gets to record the song first. Once it has been recorded, anybody can record it without permission. They have to pay royalties, but they don't need the songwriter's permission unless they want to change it substantially.

Conversely, royalties do not need to be paid if a song is in the public domain.

A good example is when Sinead O' Conner remade 'Nothing Compares 2 U'. Prince hated when she did that and didn't even know about it until he heard it on the radio.

Well they could, it's not legal though. But they may be considered a hero.

As Julie said, anybody can record/perform any song that they want without legal ramifications. It's just a matter of paying the correct royalties.

I mean do you think that Jim approved this? :
