Hi everybody!
Do you want to hear Meat's own opinion about his songs? Stories, emotions, conditions of the song's birth, etc.? Please, it will be sticky again at 2nd place! |

I've made this topic sticky on White's request.
I think Meat is too busy to give his own opinions about the songs. Maybe he can tell a his favorites and non-favorites. And the stoyry behind those songs, and why he likes those songs or not. I saw that he gave on some songs a grade. ![]() |

I think it's great that Meat posts on here but I think we are asking far too much of him to give his opinion on every song as im sure he is far too busy.
If he feels that we should know certain things about a song or if he likes/dislikes peoples opinions on a song then I would like to hear his comments, but to comment on every songs is asking quite a lot. |

Each time I see the title of this topic I pause a moment- at least in the US, "professional anaylsis" often means intense psychological counselling. So, that is always my first thought when I see that title, oddly enough. (Not to imply that ML has need of psych services- no matter what name was before those words I'd have the same reaction.)

I think we might be asking to much here, isn't that why Meat did the story tellers tour, so he could give an insight to the songs he was performing, answering questions from the audience. I don't think this is a bad idea just asking a bit much especially with the tour coming up, but if Meat agrees, well something to look forward too

Rushour. . .gotta love that avatar.
This would be interesting. Though the man I'd really like to hear from is the man who penned them . . . |

Hey Eyeore...
I sort of disagree (sorry!) it's not that I don't want to know what Jimmy etc. thought about the writing...it's just that I am MORE curious about what Meat has to say re: the characters he is portraying, his approach to a particular song... I hope you aren't offended, eyeore. |

Basically, as a writer myself, I know how misinterpretation of your creation can be a horrible thing. Not that I think that Meat misinterprets Steinman(et al)'s words, because obviously he has to discuss these things prior to recording, but I always like to hear it straight from the authors mouth rather than through the interperator. Get me? Anyway, yes it's interesting to hear it from a different perspective (Meat Loaf), however, I feel that Jim(et al)'s opinion is more, for lack of a better word, truthful. |

Hi Little Dancer, (How little are you?)
I'm 5'0- 110 lbs. age:24(pretty shrimpy ![]() Yes- I understand what you meant re: meaning of the words, but since I have read a great deal about Jim Steinman's work from the lord of excess himself (in articles, interviews etc.) I simply meant that I wanted to hear about Meat Loaf's interpretation(not of the words, but what he's thinking about- emoting in the song, do you get me?) Now, having said that, "obviously he has to discuss these things prior to recording, but I always like to hear it straight from the authors mouth rather than through the interperator." If I were interested in knowing what the author was trying to say (which of course I am) then that would be the source I would go to. That is not what I was suggesting, however. I am interested in knowing both- if I was ONLY interested in what the author was trying to say- I would just read the words and Jim's explanations thereof- I think that's missing some of it, though. "yes it's interesting to hear it from a different perspective (Meat Loaf), however, I feel that Jim(et al)'s opinion is more, for lack of a better word, truthful." Truthfull to the original concept- absolutely. However, what I feel you are missing, eyeore, is that the original concept was one in writing- if (argumentatively) you want a work that is as close as possible to Jim's interests- why not just have Jim sing it? Do you feel that vocalists are merely a vessel for the writer? I don't, I think a GOOD vocalist is an artist and must, therefore, become engaged in the work. If you wanted to know more about a character in a movie, for instance, would you ONLY ask the writer of the script- or would you also ask the actor who portrayed the character? See...as a choreographer, I tend to enjoy getting a lot of feedback and interpretation from dancers that I am working with, why?, well to be blunt- several artists working together make greater work than one artist working alone. I think the word 'truthfull' is misused in your case- If we wanted to stay 'absolutely truthfull' to Jim's concept- he would have to do them himself. Vocalists are not robots- they will always add something of themselves- he doesn't change the words, he doesn't change the music (Meat Loaf) but what he's thinking about- well you shouldn't try to control that- that would stifle the artist. again, though, that's just my opinion- and you're entitled to yours as well! ![]() |
