You have permission to shoot me down in flames but Meat said once that that the person in the song is actually a woman singing about another woman! Or was he joking!

No...what he said was...he creates characters for the songs he sings to be able to perform them.

So he imagines character in Left In the Dark as a WOMAN...

Not woman to another woman...

Yeah I heard him say that once also. Obviously the lyrics would indicate two women lovers then, but I guess at the heart of the song it is possible that Jim envisaged a women and just changed the lyrics to suit a male singer.

Its all about male insecurities and jealousy

you know she's with someone else, you can imagine what there doing, its tearing you apart. your scared to know what exactly is going on. but you need to know the gory details but the pain is to great, so all you want to do is go to bed make love and for a few moments pretend nothing has happened.

Listen to the Steinman's original version on Bad for Good and listen closely to both the spoken intro and ending as this both sets up and concludes the song perfectly.

Listen to the Barbra Streisand version of the song then and see if you agree.

I am not sure I see your point.

My comment was about wenners post. What I said was that women experience EXACTLY the same feelings as he has described for men while discussing lyrics to this song.

I've heard Barbra's version and I don't like it. I believe she might have been able to pull it off but the whole thing was in the wrong for the song key in my opinion, never mind anything else.

I'll take Meat's version any day over it...still doesn't mean that woman can't experience EXACTLY the same emotions as wenners has described for men. AND...Barbra Streisand are not ALL women...and not even an average representative...

My point is. This thread is about Left In The Dark and the comments given are for the lyrics from a man's perspective. You say it's the same for women, so..... regardless of Babs' singing or the production, do the lyrical changes in the song reflect a womans point, ould they be the type of things a woman would say or do?

Yeah I never understood that the spoken outro does not appear on my copy of "Bad for Good" instead it does appear on my copy of "Meat Loaf and friends", how bizar is that ?

I think these lyrics are close enough to what Babs sang:

Where did she touch you,
How did if feel,
Why did you let it begin
What did she whisper and
What did it mean, and
Where do you think it will end?
How long did it last
Do you think it will stop
Did you get to try anything...new
How good was she - honestly
Where did you go and
Who made the very first move, who made the very first move,
Who made the very first move..
You don't have to sneak in the doorway
Just come on into the room
I've been lying in our bed in the dark all alone
And I've been waiting, I've been waiting for you

There's been no reason to move
It's been as still as a tomb
I needed you oh so badly tonight
But I guess you had better things to do

I should have known that it was coming to this
But I must have been blind
I bet you still got a trace of her love in your eyes
And you've still got her eyes on your mind

You swore you'd be with me at 7 o'clock
Now it's a quarter to 3
And whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me
Whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me

I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
As I see you undress ooooh
I just want to get at the truth
I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
As I watch you undress
I just want to get at the truth

There are so many thing that I've just just gotta know
You tell me who! You tell me where! You tell me when!
But don't tell me now , I don't need any answers tonight
I just need some love so turn out the lights and
I'll be left in the dark again
I'll be left in the dark again
I'll be left in the dark again
Left in the dark again

I should have known that it was coming to this
But I must have been blind
I bet you still got a trace of her love in you eyes
And you still got her eyes on your mind

You swore you'd be with me at 7 o'clock
Now it's a quarter to 3
And whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me
I guess you couldn't get it from me
But down in my soul, down in my soul
I know-
I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
As I watch you undress oooooh
I just want to get at the truth

And there are so many things
That I've just got to know
You tell me who! You tell me where!
You tell me when! But don't tell me now
I don't need any answers tonight....
I just need some love so turn out the lights and
I'll be left in the dark again

I just need some love
So turn out the lights and I'll be left in the dark again
I just need some love
So turn out the lights and I'll be left in the dark again
I just need some love
So turn out the lights and I'll be left in the dark again
I just need some love
So turn out the light and I'll be left in the dark again
I just need some love
So turn out the lights and I'll be left in the dark again......
Left in the dark again

'as i watch you undress' doesnt sound like it should fit in at all in that song

have heard a bit of streisands version...it's a bit too over the top even for Steinman

Actually her video explains it all...she was "spying" on him...watching him with another woman...so she saw him undress through the window of the other woman's house I assume...

Pud, I think we will have to take this discussion into the chatroom next time we're both there...not sure what you're trying to ask me - seriously.

The reason I can see Meat imagining himself as a woman in that song is that song is somehow...too needy and too whiny...sure, men feel that way...but for a strong man it may not be easy to feel that way...most strong men (as well as women???) would just feel angry...I think?

I do have to put some more thought into this....

Some of us just put up all defences and don't want to admit things are going wrong, most politicians are like that!, and i think the song is just like that from the male point of view.

It depends on the way YOU hear that song...
IMO it is absolutely not whiny, I see it more sarcastic.
"I needed you so badly tonight, but I guess you had better things to do"
But as I read it again...sure...it can also be interpreted as whiny.

And what I was trying to say is that females are often the same way...hear no evil...see no evil...

I hear these particular lyrics as just pure bitterness...

Thanks for posting but dissapointing coming from such an established singer IMO and a boring video that does not suit the song at all. I'd rather listen to Jim anyday... I absolutely agree RJ, no emotion, Any reasonable high school singer would be just as entertaining IMO.
