Stranger Things (2016)

Well not a movie but the tv series. Thing is, with some good editing this is a 2 hour movie.

Great wink to the 80's though 7,5/10

Finally got to watch Friday the 13th part 9 Jason Goes To Hell. A big improvement on part 8 and brings something new to the table. I like the idea of Jason transferring to different people and the idea that only a Vorhees can kill him (how unfortunate for him then that some other Vorhees family members suddenly appear). Some pretty decent actors let down by the one you are supposed to be rooting for being completely wooden. Quite a satisfying end too in a completely cheesy cheap and cheerful way.

I reckon just about earns a 3/5.

Haha I agree, but I believe it is this storyline that makes it for hardcore fans one of the most hated entries in the franchise

So you going to do Jason X and Freddy vs Jason as well?

Lol not sure. I think I may need to swap franchises now and try something different. I've been meaning to watch The Purge for ages...

House on Haunted Hill (1999)

I actually like this remake with a great wink to Vincent Price (who starred in the original).

7/10

Return to the House on Haunted Hill (2007)

Direct to video sequel. With a few great kills

6/10

A Nightmare On Elm Street (the original of course!)

Much better than I expected. Definitely benefits from having strong creative vision behind it rather than being a cheap and blatant cash in or copy. Not really what I'd call scary, but quite creepy and engrossing. Original too and introduces Johnny Depp.

A very strong 3/5.

Nghtmare on Elmstreet 2

Not as bad as I remembered it to be. That said, it's not that good either. Just like the Friday sequel movies, Nightmare is not about the scare but about the kill. And this one lacked both. It's not scary and the kills are quite boring for the genre. The opening was nice, the acting very decent.

Just saw this for the first time myself. I actually found myself strangely engrossed. There are in fact hardly any kills or major shock moment but I thought the whole psychological possession thing was very well handled and actually pretty well acted. In fact doing something that dares to be different is a bold and good choice. Having said that it is supposed to be a horror film and it doesn't really deliver on that front. And I'm not sure Freddy should go to pool parties.

You know I think I'm gonna starting giving half marks.

2.5 out of 5.

So it seems we're trailing the same path

Nightmare on Elmstreet 3

This, for a long time, used to be my favorite Nightmare. But that time has long gone. There are some good gore scenes, kills that fit the genre and Freddy is back. It's horror for sure. Not scary but campy and bloody. Where part 2 was a different take on the franchise, part 3 brings us back to teenagers with bad dreams being killed. This movie comes short to the original in story, acting and finesse but was the beginning of exact the same sequels for years to come. In that matter the Nightmare and Friday the 13th movies are the same.

A Nightmare on Elmstreet 4 and 5

Long time since I saw these. Cheesy and dumb is what comes to mind.

4: 5/10

5: 4/10

I never was a Freddy fan to start with. But after seeing 5, I'm not wasting my time on the rest

Lol indeed. Just watched 3 and actually found I rather enjoyed it. Some effectively creepy and surreal dream inspired stuff and I love the image of Freddy being a puppet master using veins as strings. I think it captures my attention that bit more because it is not simply stalk and slash. Some duff acting, the junkyard scene, and the strange school bus scenes don't help but overall decent enough.

Salt (2010)

Action thriller with Angelina Jolie. Standard popcorn spy-action.

The Last Witchhunter (2015)

This was a decent fantasy/action movie. Vin Diesel can't act which is a pity. Whenever I see Diesel, he reminds me of Dwayne Johnson without talent.

Predator 2 (1990)

Although a typical action movie, for it's time, Predator 2 is a very decent movie. I find this one better than the original with Schwarzenegger. They took it to a complete different direction and it was the first movie to connect Aliens and Predator together (in the end scene on the ship you can clearly see the skull of an Alien as a trophy). It might have been over 20 years ago that I last saw this movie. All in all I enjoyed it.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 4 The Dream Master.

Oh my God. Has to be one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. How to destroy your own franchise in one easy step. Make the villain who was at least slightly sinister and creepy in most of the first three films into a rubbish spoof of himself. Here instead of any kind of menace he just provides bad one liners. And pizza. No I'm not even kidding. On top of that there is some sort of karate kid tribute going on. The guy playing karate kid is the only character with any hint of personality but is given some of the worst dialogue and scenes ever committed to film. His death is also inexplicable. Not surreal or bizarre which would be par for the course. But literally inexplicable.

I am going to carry on as I have the boxset and I am especially intrigued by New Nightmare at the end. But I will not be paying so much attention to the screen for the next couple of discs!

New Nightmare is at least the average horror movie and has a few creepy scenes. And I like the new Freddy look in that movie. Good luck gettin' there

The Race to Witch Mountain (2009)

Love this scifi adventure. Dwayne Johnson was fun to watch. I always prefered his action/comedy roles. Great acting by the kids and Carla Gugino as well.
