Some people seem to think that any kind of appearance = good promo... If it was that easy, marketing wouldn't be such a difficult job. The question is: Did the average RAW viewer recognize Meat Loaf as a rock singer who has a pretty good album out or just as someone playing a silly part in a wrestling show? What the audience got to hear from the album was Meat screaming a few words into the microphone. He could have as well played a cooler, less annoying character - I believe that could have been better promo than him gabbling rather incoherently about the CD.

The average RAW viewer took this as a recognizable celebrity who was about to get RKO'd NO MATTER what the guy said. Meat was there to get an insert in about the album and get RKO'd. If Meat would have sang Randy's entrance music he has now, he would have still gotten RKO'd. Randy is on the verge of becoming a babyface, and the fans want to see anything that moves get RKO'd. It doesn't matter. That's what the average RAW viewer is going to see.
It was a FUN gig. When we are entrapped in all seriousness about wanting HCTB to do well, this was a FUN stunt. Having said that, if you watched the whole show through, the announcers Michael Cole and the King promo'd the album VERY tastefully. Giving Meat his image back. And believe me the fans of the WWE listen to what the announcers say just as if there is action in the ring. There were two plugs that were stellar. In terms, Meat was playing the villain here. So what does an RKO mean....the boys in the back = instant respect.....fans = instant respect. You take a bump, you get the cred. Suzieq |

With due respect, don't judge a thread by it's title. Title said WWE Raw 05/10/10 ~ not sure how you interpreted the singing part into it....and it's under Loaf!Camera!Action! ~ tells me TV appearance.

Let's assume I wasn't a fan. Would that skit have made me buy the album? NO! But I think I've become a Randy Orton fan.

Well, if I had seen the rocker Meat Loaf instead of some bloke getting on Orton's nerves...
P.S.: Meat performed songs at boxing matches in Germany in the past. Yes, he appeared as a singer and he didn't have to get himself knocked down then. Last edited by Sarge; 16 May 2010 at 05:29. |

Meat did do his best with what he was offered but what he was offered wasn't very good in my opinion. There's nothing Sarge has said that I disagree with.

I'm not a wrestling fan, in fact I can't stand it so I only watched the bit with Meat. To be honest I had no idea what RKO meant so I was a bit surprised to see Meat get thrown.
I know some people disapproved of Meat doing it but if he enjoyed doing it, then why shouldn't he? Yes there was the risk of him getting hurt but I doubt they'd have allowed him to do it if he hadn't had sufficient practice in how to fall correctly and everything. The way I look at it, it's getting more promotion for the album and the more people that are aware of it, the better chance it has of selling. |

As you say .. he enoyed it and had fun. He also reached an audience of millions, not only with his actual appearance, but through the additional commentaries during the programme. Like you, for me there's no "coulda" no "shoulda" .. Just why not? He chooses, and imo knows a bit more about what he's doing than the peanut gallery Caryl |

It wasn't an ideal bit of promo but with the choice between that or nothing, it's better than nothing.

Boxing is not scripted...wrestling is. Not many guests come onto a wrestling show and don't get involved in a storyline. I would not expect Meat to go to a UFC event and jump in the ring with Anderson Silva.

I'm actually with Sarge on this one; it would be cool to see Meat full of conviction and coolness in the promo spots, and if the situation isn't right for a live performance, why not run a HCTB TV spot at the end/halfway through/whatever - some great rockin' clips over the album artwork (like the end of Wario's vid) - in the same way you'd cut to a trailer or scene from a movie if you were interviewing an actor?
My 2 cents. Doode. P.S. Or... if you want to go the comedy route, get Jack Black to do several promo spots on TV shows with Meat. At least that way people who aren't familiar with the humour and just see Meat as a musician will get it! |

You don't have to tell me what wrestling is all about. It would have been even worse if it wasn't scripted. When appearing at the boxing matches Meat got applause - and he performed with Patti.
