The Test that everyone hates.

Having previously failed my driving test back in January, I decided to apply straight away and sit it again. I had to wait four months and I had it again today. Observation was my big weakness last time, I wasn't looking in the mirrors enough. Plus I think looking in mirrors too much is a joke, but you have to if you want to pass this mickey mouse test. Which to me is nothing but a money racket, as know one drives like that on the road from what I can see.

Anyway I strolled in today feeling confident, the test centre that I was supposed to be doing my test in was closed, and I was told nothing about it, and the test was been conducted elsewhere. A complete shambles from a so called professional organization. So I had to rush down to this location. I went in and I had to sit and wait for a half an hour cause the tester said he was delayed. Anyway I made a complete hack of the theory, I was brutal. But the fun was only beginning. I went out to the car to do the check, and before I knew it my test had to be cancelled. I said to myself WTF??? He said the brake lights and indicator lights were flashing simultaneously. He brought me inside, and I lost the head with him. He said "You have a serious attiude boy" and I said "It's people like me that keep you in a job". I was so mad. I still am.

Forgive me for sounding pedantic but you can't do your theory then go out to the car part of your test on the same day. You have to pass the Theory and Hazard perception and get a pass certificate before you can even book practical test.

Alternatively are you in the US? If you are I passed a US test while out there with the army and it truly was mickey mouse.

Sorry, but you have to do the test in a car that's in a roadworthy condition. He had no choice.

In Ireland you have to do the theory test, and then you can apply for a provisional licence. Which I did over a year ago, and it's valid for 2 years.

You can't sit a test until you have a Provisonal Licence. I think it's done a bit different in the UK from what I heard. I'm not sure if they have the Provisonal system over there. So it's hard to explain.

As my step-daughter's just passed her test, I'll explain it. You apply for a Provisional licence, and begin driving lessons. You study driving theory. You take your theory test, and if you pass, it's valid for two years, and you can apply to take your practical test. If you fail, you have to retake it before you can do the practical. Once you take and pass the practical test, you have to watch yourself for a certain amount of time (I think it's two years) because if you incur any penalty points on your licence, you automatically lose it and have to start again.

If you haven't passed your theory, you can't even apply for the practical. If you've passed the theory but don't have the certificate with you on the day, you can't take the practical. If your car isn't roadworthy, you can't take the practical. All of these things are your own responsibility.

Actually everything that you've learned goes out the window, and you go back to your old ways again. Once you have your full licence it doesn't matter, that's why it's such a rip off and a waste of time and money, because you'll never drive like that again everyone agrees.

I dunno about that, in the whole you don't drive like you do for a test but I learnt safety stuff that I never used before taking lessons and test and some of it's even stuck.

And once you have your full license it does matter, 6 points within your first two years and you're back to square one with no license and having to take your test again over here.

That's really the wrong attitude to take ... after 20+ years of driving it's clear you never ever learn everything.. Your full license merely gives you permission to venture on to the roads on your own. I really hope you learn that before you pass your test.

well i'm surprised you dont have a license already then

it's up to the individual whether they want to go back to old ways again, which i dont really understand as you shouldnt have any 'old way's being a 'new' driver but whatever lol

I drove buses for nigh on 7 yrs and when you drive something that big and destructive (they are built like tanks) you have to have a certain amount of respect for the rules of the road, i thought i knew everything till a truck came speeding round a blind bend and hit me head on, even though it wasnt my fault i certainly broke less 'minor' rules on the road. People who think they know everything when it comes to driving are just a danger to everyone else and usualyy end up killing someone sooner or later, my brother thought he knew everything, he no longer has a licence and spent a few months inside for his arrogance. You tester was absolutely right, you need to adjust your attitude or i hope you never get your licence.

During my time as an ambulance person I attended in incident where a van driver had knocked over a motorcyclist at a road junction. The incidnet had occured because the van driver had not used his mirrors before turning right. The injury to the motorcyclist - a nearly severed foot!

The mirrors are there for a purpose. Please use them!!

My dad, who can drive everything that goes on wheels, always says that driving license means that you have permission to learn driving by yourself. It doesn't means that you can really drive. Dad says that you learn to drive only by driving.

And I think it's true. I got my license in 2004 and yet I'm not fully learned everything about driving. My dad drives around 100 00 kilometres per year, more than average person. He knows.

In Finland first you have to past theory test and after that the driving test. Not at the same day. Then you get provisional license which is valid for 2 years. Like in Ireland. After a year and half you can to got to nightdriving course. That's compulsory to everyone. You can't get permanent driving license without nightdriving course.
