Too bad that album sounds very 1980s. The songs are not bad and various live performances have proven that they can sound pretty cool with a proper arrangement. Meat's vocals are top-notch but the music could have been better. Some very good musicians were involved in the making of the album, but unfortunately Frank Farian has never been a rocker.
My favorite song on BBIS is Execution Day and believe it or not I like to listen to One More Kiss. I favor it over the ballads on HCTB. 4/10 I'd give the album at least 7/10 if the songs sounded as their live counterparts. It's always interesting to see what is classified as an "American classic" (by Wario's standards). ![]() Last edited by Sarge; 01 Jul 2010 at 00:25. |

![]() I had some favorites on this album, like Execution Day, BBIS and R'N'R Mercenaries, but it was def Standing on The Outside the one I prefer over all, and I hoped that Meat surprised me nicely if this was chosen to be performed on tour |

I know but there were albums produced in that period that sound timeless, BBIS sounds like almost everything I dislike about that decade - like a bad cliché of the 1980s.

I love this album too. One More Kiss, Burning Down and Standing On The Outside being the tracks for me.
However, it sounds like there is clipping going on in some of that album. Has anyone else noticed or is it just me?! It gives an old time feel to it which I like... |

I think the bass is too loud in several places. Particularly during Rock And Roll Hero.

Maybe he means editing. It's a little rough compared to technology these days. Sometimes it is quite apparent overdubs have been used instead of that the whole song was played in one go. I heard this quite clearly on One more kiss on the original album but when I'm listening to my MP3s now it doesn't seem as apparent. Weird, might just be due to the compression.

Standing on the outside is most definitely the best song on the album and one of my fav by ML. I give it 7/10.

this is my least favorite record.
Execution Day, Getting Away With Murder, One More Kiss, and Blind Before I Stop were excellent....Rock n Roll Hero and Masculine were decent..... Loved the first part of Burning Down, but just lose interest as it goes on.....I just skip the rest of the songs, as I really don't care for any of them.... I agree with the statement that Execution Day would have been a better title for the record overall, i'd rate it 5/10 |

Very underrated album, in my opinion. The first song I ever heard from this was Rock and Roll Hero, which prompted me to buy the entire album. It has it's up and downs, starting off insanely high with Execution Day, steadily dropping until One More Kiss, where it rises up through Blind Before I Stop and falls back down for the entirety of the album, with peaks on Masculine and Rock and Roll Hero. Definitely better than MATLAF, and I'd say if the trimmed the crap from this album (Burning Down, I'm looking at you), this would be an amazing piece of work.
1. EXECUTION DAY: Amazing song. Without a doubt the best on the record and, I'd say, Meat's best song over all of MATLAF, Bad Attitude and BBIS. Great piece of rock and roll. As someone noted above, almost Steinman esque in it's composition. The harder bit in the middle is kind of random, but it works, to an extent :P Still best song on the album. 2. ROCK AND ROLL MERCENARIES: This song I'm a bit...eh about. It's alright. As far as Im concerned, this best bit of it is the chorus: Money is power, and power is fame! ![]() 3. GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER: Same as RnRM - ok, but not great. Nothing memorable about it, put simply. 4. ONE MORE KISS (NIGHT OF THE SOFT PARADE): Second best song on the album. I'll admit I'm not too keen on the harder, more rock-orientated middle section, but the rest of the song is fantastic. Makes me wish Meat did a bit more composing of his own. Considering he had a pretty major hand in what are unquestionably the three best songs on the album (Execution Day, One More Kiss, BBIS), I'd be really interested to hear more of his own originals. 5. BLIND BEFORE I STOP: Great piece of rock. Maybe not the best title for the overall album, IMO (should have gone to Execution Day), but without a doubt one of the best songs on the album. Great guitar work. Third only to Execution Day (1) and One More Kiss (2) in terms of quality. 6. BURNING DOWN: Can't stand this song. So boring and repetitive, definitely a candidate for worst song on the album. Moving along... 7. STANDING ON THE OUTSIDE: Another decent song. Very repetitive, just like Burning Down, but I'd hazard a guess it's probably a better quality piece. Alright song, not the best but definitely pretty good. Nothing memorable about it. Could have potentially been an amazing song if it had a bit more variation. 8. MASCULINE: Another great piece of rock, probably 5th best on the album. Can't say I'm too keen on the lyrics, but musically it's powerful and enjoyable. Again, one of the better of Meat's songs from the 80s. 9 and 10: MAN AND A WOMAN / SPECIAL GIRL: I'll be honest and admit that I've never made it to the end of either of these songs. Don't interest me in the slightest, and I'm not going to review them any further than saying I don't like them. At all. Man and a Woman in particular is horrible. Special Girl I just never really clicked with. 11: ROCK AND ROLL HERO: The first song I ever heard from BBIS was this one...which instantly got me hooked into trying the entire album. Another amazing work of art...sold my soul to rock and roll, and it didn't cost a thing ![]() ![]() |
