Default Meat In Mail On Sunday...

Here's an article i thought i'd share with you from today's Mail on Sunday. It's complete and utter BULLOCKS, but here goes...

Meat Loaf - Cardiff International Arena

MEAT LOAF'S WELL PAST HIS SELL - BY DATE..

You are a veteran rock star, making what's billed as your Last World Tour, and you collapse on stage at Wembley with chest pains. After being treated for an irregular heartbeat, do you (a) gracefully retire, or (b) reschedule some dates, instruct your backing singers to put on nurses' uniforms, and get them to wheel you back on stage in a hospital bed?

Meat Loaf was never big on being graceful. In the rough world of hard rock, many a star looks as if he could be one of his roadies, but Meat Loaf was the fiorst to look like one of his trucks.

For years, it made him unique, but then along came hip-hop, with it's posses of oversized performers, and now the bigger waistline is sweeping the English speaking world. Soon, the average American will feel that Meat Loaf is on the scrawny side.

Mr Loaf's Cardiff date had been postponed twice for health reasons. At the arena, a recorded message assured callers the show was still on. One out of three ain't good. But here he was, rising form his bed to tread the boards like the showman he is.

He didn't dance, but he did trot around for 150 minutes. His voice hasn't changed since Bat Out Of Hell ruled the album chart : it's still the sound of a plaintive mammoth.

He likes to throw everything at an audience - slapstick routines, ghoulish masks, fake flames, flying sofa's and his own comic book personality. The trick of shining floodlights in the crowds face is used four times in the first two numbers. Track three is an interminable rifferama; so is track four. After a heart scare, you'd think that life was too short.

His best song is Jim Steinman's I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That): it's big, romantic and everybody wonders what it is he won't do. Bat Out Of Hell and Dead Ringer For Love still hit the spot, but thier piano - driven verbosity draws heavily from early Bruce Springsteen. Meat Loaf is to Springsteen what Oasis are to Lennon, taking one strand of a complex oeuvre and making it bigger and brasher.

Meat Loaf wins over Cardiff in the end, but he is too self - indulgent and his patter verges on the bullying. 'Hey! I didn't ask you to talk!!' he says when some fans dare open thier mouths mid-anecdote. If rock theatre is what you are after, it's done far better by Peter Gabriel.

3 stars out of 5

I have absolutely no idea what Meat Loaf concert he was at - but it sure as hell wasn't the same one as me....

Nope he wasn't at any concerts i have been to doesn't this pratt know that part of why we love him is for the theatre and the spectacle of lights colour and music at his show if I want to see someone sitting down all night and singing to me I'll watch Des O'OConnor.

Sorry if I have upset any Des fans

What a load of rubbish. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but as a write up surely he should have mentioned that the fans totally enjoyed it and Meat Couldn't Have Done It Better.

Let's hope people take this as the load of garbage it is.

This article has really pissed me off. The gig in Sheffield on Thursday blew me away, I was in another world for three hours, my jaws ached with laughing at the antics and my voice was hoarse with singing and cheering Meat is the best , he rescheduled cos he cares about his fans and did'nt want to let us down.

This is somebody's opinion, and everybody is entitled to that.

Saying that however:
"'Hey! I didn't ask you to talk!!' he says when some fans dare open their mouths "

If that's true then Meat should be ashamed. You never do that.

Well, that wasn't the type of thing I wanted to see in the paper the day before I see him I found it amusing when he said at AFL everyone wondered what he wouldn't do. He was the only one there who didn't, then! Also, what is rock theatre? I always thought it was rock opera? Also that guy was a "pop" reviewer, and for not enjoying it he certainly made a lot of it: biggest review, nice big picture.
Anyway, screw that guy, I'm going to the Telewest tomorrow (that was another thing in the MoS: it said the one tomorrow is at the Metro Radio hall or something???? Never even heard of it!!!! It would be funny if it wasn't the one I was going to!) and I'm gonna have a blast!!! As for opening my mouth to talk to Mam, I wouldn't have dared even before reading that article, being four rows away from him

The only time I have heard Meat tell people to shut up I was so pleased because I was trying to listen to the show and they were really p***ing me off. That was at Birmingham in November. The people involved were shouting over the top of him not just talking.

Sinecure - you hadta be there - in context, Meat wasn't being rude to the fans at all - at least i didn't feel he was. It was in middle of Took The Words and he'd asked for complete silence so he could talk to us - he then said something about feeling completely better, and some fans cheered - as you do, and thats when Meat pipped up with 'Hey i didn't ask you to talk!!' It was actually quite amusing.

This journalist may have his own opinion and I have mine.

One of these:
a) he's deaf and blind
b) he fell asleep (shame on him!)
c) he's on drugs (poor guy!)

or 3 out of 3!

So, do not let a short minded journalist (blame it on his parents who probably paid for his studies) ruin it all!

Right you are heat, the interaction (is that a word?) it's just for fun!
And if you're lucky enough to be in the front just respond "Shut up yourself!"

I was at that concert & Meat had every right to tell them to shut up - they were morons

As for the article in the paper today - what a load of crap

Meat looks & sounds great

If he's so bad why does he paly to sell out audiences every where he goes? Seems to me that the so called reporter is insulting the fans rather than the grea man himself!!!

I love the way this guy tries to insult him by saying his voice is still the same

Let's face it, when you can still sing like you did when you did 25 years ago that's pretty impresive. How about Frank Sinatra? He still had a great voice at the end of his career.I dare say no one complained that he always sounded the same .
And yes, Bat ruled the charts, and still makes regular appearences in the rock charts. What's his point?

One pop reviewer Vs. thousands of happy fans. Not a bad balance .

The problem is when people who review a some one like Meat they dont seem to understand Meat is acting and the character is Meat. Its just all an act to entertain the fans who understand whats going on so when he tells you to shut up its not to be took the wrong way. Hope I have made this clear hahahahah.

Keep Rockin Meat and you guys.

His voice is the same as it was 25 years ago??

That’s a new take on things just sent to test us!!

I can easily come back and argue with people who are negative about an aging voice but what do you say when they moan about a voice that hasn’t changed?!

Take that review for what it is. Crap.

Hmm carol mouse,
codswallop, I'd best learn the language quick before we get there. I think I get the general drift of it tho. You didn't like the review? :o Personally, I think he's a putz! Or a numbnuts.
A reviewer can certainly not like a performance, but this one was glaring in his bias in several instances. He did admit the crowd liked the performance. So he has bad taste in music. I think he sucks.
