Now that I actually have a means of playing SACDs, I've been thinking about getting one of the SACD releases of BOOH ...
... so, has anyone got one and if so, what do you think? I've read differing reviews over the 5.1 surround version in particular, with some people saying they prefer the stereo SACD to that. These things seem to be rare and thus expensive ![]() ![]() Dave |

I've got one, but haven't got the ability to play it
![]() Likewise I've heard mixed reviews from people who have heard it, some prefer the 5.1 version others the traditional stereo. From what I've heard it's interesting to play around with the output from the various channels, as I understand that Meat's vocals on some of the tracks can be largely separated from the instruments. |

Puddin had this as a download on his Blog a while back! It was pretty fantastic to hear just the vocals!
I could do with hearing it again as I lost my version ![]() |

Ditto, the hard drive with all my music on crunched to a halt about 18 months ago and I never got around to re-downloading the vocal tracks (Always remember to back up, people!).
I have the SACD but I believe it's the stereo version, they pop up on ebay from time to time, that's how I got mine. |

The download was fantastic for that! Just listened to the central channel (pretty much just the vocals) on For Crying Out Loud and they're simply fantastic!
Did anyone manage to get the vocal track from CHSIB>???? |

I have the SACD and a player
The quality is good, significantly better than anything else available at the time BUT its not as good as some of the newer audio formats such as MP6 The nature of the game is that as technology improves so does the ability to get cleaner, better and more impressive recordings |

Could someone explain to me what this mythical MP6 is? I know of a lot of audio-encoding formats, but I've never heard of MP6, and neither has Google.

Yes, I've seen that, but no: Google has heard of some MP6 player.
Try finding anything on how these 'newer audio formats like MP6' actually works. I did. I got nothing. |

Problem is its a self defeating circle. Unless they invest in a better quality product sales may continue to fall ( Afterall too many people are happy to use p2p software to get music for free at the same quality they would get if they paid ) |

Ok, here goes, there was an article on this on BBC website ages ago but can't find it now. Apparently it's been invented by the same guy that invented mp3's but he's developed it so that it doesn't compress as much as mp3's do so retains a lot more quality, there's also the ability to store much more in the same file such as the vid, song credits etc etc
Wish to hell I could find a link to prove this but I guess you're just gonna have to take my word for it......................................god I hope the whisky hasn't really screwed me and I'm totally wrong lol |

So at some point in the near future everything is going to get re-released in better quality and we're all going to have to fork out again? Sort of the musical equivalent of Bluray?

mp3 is a shortened name for MPEG-1 3 layer audio format. It uses a “lossy” compression algorithm that is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data needed to represent an audio recording. It still sounds like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio to most listeners.
It was invented by a group of European engineers at Philips, CCETT, IRT and the Fraunhofer Society. They worked in the framework of the EUREKA 147 DAB digital radio research program. It became an ISO/IEC standard in 1991 mp6 is simply an updated "Lossless" format that had twice the number of layers available for encoding of information within the same comparative filesize as mp3. It was devised by the same team that worked on mp3. One significant difference is the potential for multi format applications due to it being fully compatable with audio, video and gaming |

Essentially yes but as was the case with the different HD video formats there are usually more than one contender to be the next generation with one eventually coming out as a winner.

Besides that, mp3 is short for MPEG-1 Audio Layer III. Not 3 Layer, so your "mp6 is mp3 with double the layers" makes no sense whatsoever. And still, no credible source. ![]() |

Try a google search for Phillips Research Division and searching for a joint press release between them and the Fraunhofer Society (Software and Systems Technology Centre ) where they describe mp6, its applications and development.
Just because something is at the moment is a little obscure and hard to find on a popularist search engine does not mean it does not exist. |
