acronyms.

 Am I the only one who often finds myself trying to remember Meat's entire back catalogue because another obscure acronym has been used and i'm left racking my brains trying to remember which song is which?

Bat, Paradise, Lemon, I'll Kill You, All Coming Back, Sailor To Siren, these don't take very long to type out and are perfectly clear to anyone who is aware the song exsists, so can we please drop some of the more elaborate and obscure acronyms?

Poll added to gage feedback.

RadioMaster 05 Aug 2008 23:22

IMO its not a case if acronyms are existing or not.
It's rather a case of using them in the right context.

If youre talking to a newbie who isnt familiar with the Meat Loaf world, then using acronyms like IACBTMN, CHSIB or WTTN might be a bit out of tune.
But amongst a group of 'insiders' what speaks against it?
And lets not make the situation more difficult than it is. 99% of the acronyms are understood by the vast majority, and if its easier to write BOOH then Bat out of Hell, wny dont do it?
It's only i guess about 5% of the times that un-understandable acronyms are posted. And even if so, a little bit of thinking doesnt hurt anyone ;) and worst case theres stlll a list with most of the ML world acronyms flying around somewhere....

When posting you are talking to EVERYONE newbie or not.
In fact newbies might be put off posting when confronted by a thread with terminology they don't understand.

And it's not just newbies.
I've been a Meat Loaf fan for a couple of years now and I still go black sometimes when faced with an obscure acronym.

Yes, there IS a list, but I don't want to have to go back constantly to check against some list to keep up with the convo.

Makes things far less fun IMO.

SamCat 05 Aug 2008 23:56

Theres a list!! No one told me there was a list!!! I end up looking at the cds trying to work it out lol!!

Lol! Good point Deb ;)

In MY opinion, acronyms for Meat's better known tracks, like AFL / BOOH are fine but it took a good scour of iTunes for me to figure out what you meant by WAL...however I got used to it in the end. I guess if you don't mind the scouring of CD cases or iTunes / hunting for the acronyms thread [which I can never find...and why is the word acronym so long btw?] / or admitting in the thread you haven't a clue what people are talking about then it's not so bad and you'll learn eventually, but I agree obscure acronyms can get a bit frustrating sometimes. People will always talk in acronyms tho - I remember at one point having to ask people what btw, imo, pmsl, afk, lol, lmao and so on and so forth meant...and those aren't things specific to the Meat forum.

If most of you started talking to me about your work I probably wouldn't understand you either as you probably use a whole host of acronyms you don't even realise you use. I work in Community Safety and recently emailed a friend saying I had witnessed an 'rta' - a term in common use in my workplace. Didn't realise until she asked me that 'rta' meant nothing and certainly not 'road traffic accident' in my friend's world.

Actually thinking about this...acronyms make posts shorter....so no, I don't like them ;)

Pudding 06 Aug 2008 00:37

I don't mind acronyms it's bad spelling that pisses me off.

theoretically I agree with you, only that I think it's not as big a problem as you make it.
it happens very rarely that acronyms are used that are either obscure or not obvious from the context. IF you dont understand an acronym that's annoying, but honestly, how often does that happen?

AndyK 06 Aug 2008 12:52

YTTWROOMM!

I really don't see the problem...I take on board that everyone should be able to take part in conversations but most songs are shortened to one or two words, and those that aren't are pretty obvious, there's very few that a Meat fan couldn't work out and I'm sure if they couldn't no-one would have an issue asking what it meant

RadioMaster 06 Aug 2008 13:08

CHSIB Lucy

And I'm a representative agent of the PayPal Resolution Services department for all UK phone and email customers...try getting an acronym out of that...nerr indeed:twisted:

The one acronym i would gladly ban the use of is CHSIB...that one is used so much in here and in other meat loaf related places that it can drives me nuts and i would gladly shoot it or it's representative out of a cannon to stop its use.

as for other ones I'm not really bothered to be honest for the longer song titles, i think it takes less time to type out of the name of the song then to work out the acronym for it.

ILTBAHAJ
H
KD
ED
PL
WYSIWYG
WHTSN
etc

It takes longer to think about those and they are just a few short song title examples...especially H!

Was that posted to agree with the thread or to get us all to agree...coz if people start posting things like that they need to be banned*...without thinking about it I could only get one of them. Then I had to wrack my brain some further, I think PL would technically be TPL? ED and KD took a scour of iTunes, and I have no idea about H and ILTBAHAJ...so help!

HA! It's like one of those quizzes where it's combinations of letters and numbers and you have to guess the well known phrase or saying!

*Edit: that's the acronyms that'd need banning, not the author of such posts...tho maybe that should be a case by case basis ;)

RadioMaster 07 Aug 2008 22:46

ILTBAHAJ - Id love to be as Heavy as Jesus
H - Heroes
KD - Keep Driving
ED - Execution Day
PL - Promised Land
WYSIWYG - What you see is what you get
WHTSN - you took the Words right out of my mouth HoT Summer Night
etc - et cetera

what did I win? :))

allrevvedup 07 Aug 2008 22:49

I was doing it to show how crazy it can get but anyway, the answers you cry

ILTBAHAJ (I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus)
H (Hello, a tough one but from Popcorn Blizzard)
KD (Keep driving from MATLAF OR Midnight at the lost and found as I call it)
ED (Execution Day, from Blind before I stop)
PL (OK it could have been the promised land)
WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)
WHTSN (whatever happened to saturday night)

My point is that after a while these stretch it just slightly and it would be better sometimes just describing them briefly such as lemon, all revved up, rock n roll dreams, paradise, etc

Which is what is done in 99% of the time.
To be honest, I fail to see the problem here.

~Helen~ 07 Aug 2008 22:58

that both of you took different song titles to be represented by the ambiguous 'H' ;)

but yep, I agree, I don't think people do abbreviate THAT often nor more importantly, to that extent, or maybe I'm just used to what the abbreviations mean and stopped noticing now.

allrevvedup 07 Aug 2008 23:46

should heroes not be a time for heroes?

RadioMaster 07 Aug 2008 23:51

the compilation mine was on says just Heroes
