Specifically, the version that's on Dead Ringer; does anybody know when this was recorded? Was it during the same time period as the rest of the songs on the album? Some of the personnel involved are different than those on the other songs.

I know the song obviously predates BOOH, so I'm asking about this particular recording.

Well, the bulk of the band (Meat, Steve Buslowe, Davey Johnstone, Max Weinberg, Jimmy Maelen, Teddie Neeley, Allan Nicholls, and the Blend-O-Matics*) are on the track, so I'd presume that Mick Ronson and Nicky Hopkins were either just guest appearances or it was one of the last tracks finished and they couldn't get everyone back together.

* Rory Dodd and Eric Troyer, with the name coined on Karla DeVito's debut album. They're not actually credited as this, I just like the name.

Hmmm, yeah, that's what I thought too. But Roy Bittan's missing, and he's a key piece of my "which came first" puzzle. :sherlock:

They reuse instrumental tracks with different vocals sometimes, right?

I do know this: Jim Steinman and Jimmy Iovine produced all of the backing tracks with the band, and may or may not have done the full production on "Dead Ringer for Love" and "Read 'Em and Weep" before letting Meat Loaf and another producer finish the album. Maybe Jim would know?

I was under the impression that Jimmy supplied the songs, and that was the extent of his involvement with the album.

nowhere in the cd program does it say jim did anything of teh sort
