never understood the lord of the rings hype...

I've tried to watch the trilogy several times, but always gave up half way through.
There's just another battle, and another evil wizard, and another battle, and another mysterious mountain pasage, and another battle, and so on... I never really got the point of all those battles. It's not like Star Wars were every battle was an important point to the plot. LOTR always seemed to ma as if someone said 'hey lets pile another battle on top....this time let them fight....erm, how about orcs?' and through that process forgot the actual plot of the movie.

I can pretty much agree with that. I struggle to get through one LOTR film in one sitting, let alone watching all three back to back. However I can appreciate that it is very well done, just too long and meandering. Then again I've never read any of the books.

Same here on LOTR but then I also don't like Harry Potter. Guess I just don't like the "Fantasy" thing but I certainly do think these movies are WAYYY overrated. In my humble opinion these movies don't work on the same level as many films that get such ratings on IMDB, ie it just doesn't have something in it for everyone. I think it is a far too specific genre for that.

same here. I always thought the films were aimed at people who know the books, but I dont think it wouldnt have been as successful as it was relying on such a small target audience.

Star wars IV - A new hope (2004 version)

While the movie itself is still one of the best scifi films ever, I'm not sure what to make of Goerge Lucas' endless reworks of it.
In the cantina scene, now Greedo shoots first, to make Han Solo look like less of a reckless killer.
I dont have a problem with better digital effects, but as soon as someone tries to change the story/plot/characters of a classic like SW theyre definitely going too far.

Probably put back to how it was for the Blu Ray release later this year. They put it back in the 2007 DVD release but I think that one was only on sale for short period and didn't they put that young guy in the ghost bit at the very end of the trilogy in that release?? I don't know. Maybe it's on the version I've got too but I've never watched the DVDs.

It's all a load of bollox that Sar Wars re-release nonsense imo. Don't get me wrong it was great seeing the films in the cinema in 1997 but there are indeed too many versions now.

you reminded me of this from Jay and Silent Bob...(can't use the whole Ben Affleck quote cause of the language)

I don't think I'm alone in the world in imagining this flick may be the worst idea since Greedo shooting first. You know it, but... a Jay and Silent Bob movie? Feature length? Who'd pay to see that?

This is probably going to make me unpopular but I don't like Star Wars! I've seen the original films plenty of times and I've never really enjoyed them. I thought all three of the new films were .

For me, the original three especially the empire strikes back were the best.

I think Lucas left himself with way too much to do in the last of the prequels but even then that was probably the better of the three. I think he should have made it exactly the same way as the original three in that he directed the first and then got others in to direct the other two.

I get annoyed at some of the additions, Han Solo and Greedo is one in particular that is annoying and looks terrible as well, but hey it's up there as some of the great films ever made and has influenced countless other films.

Look more recently at the new Star Trek film and you can see tons of Star wars type scenes and set designs.

There's Star Wars references in each the the three LOTR films that RJ detests so much as well.

The problem with the prequels is that the basic storyline got lost in all the dross that was put in to backup the marketing and sales campaign of toys and that ran alongside the films to help generate the revenue to pay for making the films.

star wars references dont make a bad movie a good one (except for family guy's blue harvest )

I think the problem with the prequels was that they just tried too hard to make everything fit in with the old ones. you can see that especially with all the stuff they tried to pack into the last 30 mins of episode 3.

They paced the films completely wrongly I think. Spreading the story of the rise of the Empire and Anakin turning in to Darth Vader simultaneoulsy over three films, which resulted in both major storylines being dragged out. If they'd concentrated on the Empire storyline in the first film and a half and then had the Anakin appearance mid way through second half after the Clone Wars started then they could have paced it all better. Not every film needs a huge battle scene unless they want to sell toys, which I'm pretty sure is why they came out like they did.

on that matter, has anyone seen that clone wars movie or the tv seriies?

i have seen neither, but it was my impression that they did both for two reasons: a) they couldnt get all they wanted into the last movie and b) more money of course.
Also, wasnt there something like a clone wars mini cartoon series between ep 1 and 2? there seems to be something at the back of my mind...

and back on topic, last movie I've seen was....

Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back (2004)
the new effects worked a lot better in this one
