Lemons have a sour taste. Most people reflect upon that as a bad thing (rubbish I think - I like lemons), so you can see it as a metaphore for bad things. Basically, when someone says that 'Life is a lemon and I want my money back!', they mean that life is either a bore, not going the way it should be, full of lies, or whatever negativism you'd like to insert in this list - and they are so pissed about it, they want a refund... or something like that.
