3 is a complete different movie. Nothing to do with Michael Myers. But a great 80's horror story. I urge you to give it a chance.
As a canon I think either 1,2 and 4 work great. Or 1, 2 and H20.
I actually enjoyed 4 and found 5 okay for most parts.
6 is chaotic. Even the producer's cut is. And I dislike that one.
H20 was okay. Great opening maybe a bit too Scream-ish for me.
Ressurection was, as you say, shameless. The opening for that movie was actually shot during H20. Producers didn't want the franchise to end and demanded this sequence for a possible follow-up.

By the way I think the unsung hero is Donald Pleasance, who is an excellent presence and almost as mad as Michael Myers.
