AFL (Aussie Rules) was formerly known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), which was known as VFA before that (Victorian Football Association). It was renamed the Australian Football League due to the VFL's governing body's decision to market the competition as an officially national league in 1990.
VFA was founded in 1877, however games were first played as early as 1850s.
