Actually I don't think it is at all common here in the UK .. grandpapa perhaps, but I have never heard papa used to refer to grandfather, as a term of endearment or not. I have to say I found it bizarrely misleading when I first saw it And this is a UK forum after all so I have every sympathy with Mouse on this occasion.
