I agree with Neil, musically imagine is boring and overhyped, BUT you have to keep in mind the times it was released. Today youve got songs about pacifism and freedom all over the place, but I can imagine (lol) that back then especially the lyrics had much more of an impact.

Christ, listen to "give peace a chance", to me one of the most boring Lennon/Beatles songs ever, but it became a hit because of it's message.
Btw, rumour has it Lennon and all his friends once met at a hotelroom, wanting to play this song, but they didnt have any instruments with them. So they took all kinds of stuff from the hotel room, phonebooks, etc to substitute the instruments, and apparently John liked it that much, that he kept it for the recording.

I personally think the Beatles wrote (and performed!) some truly amazing tracks, but I'm more a fan of the McCartney-penned stuff, John Lennon and his music have always been a little....weird to me.
