I think it´s because he was afraid to lose, forgot her name, and was ready to do EVERYTHING to save her, even use the dark side of the force.
The whole new movies are about becoming something you dont want to, from noble reasons.
All in all, the new films dont even come close to the original ones.

Btw,
Brining out 3rd part with less good quality, just to make money, though it´s not really a sequel.....that reminds me of something....
