Ignore threads
 

Is it possible to choose to ignore a thread so they don't show up when you hit the new posts button? Like, for example, all of Fred's threads?

I don't believe it is.

But on the main forum screen, you can double click on the envelope symbol in the left hand column next to where it says Freds World in order to mark the forum as read.

No. You could try ignoring Fred, but threads would still come up as new because he's just replying.

When you have Fred on ignore, at least some of these threads do not pop up in your new posts screen (own experience ;) )
