Something with the lyrics

So, i listened to OOTFP and i found something in the lyrics that, couldnīt work:

"wander DOWN the ancient hallway...iīm in the room AT THE TOP"

How should she ever reach him there?

Oh this is too funny...I guess they will forever be star crossed lovers...on the other hand...we are talking about Bat out of Hell...bats do fly...

Maybe we should start a Paradox appreciation thread.

Yeah these contradictions in words can be found in many of Steinman's lyrics, however in this case I think the "journey" is quite plausible as wandering down does not necessarily mean you are moving in a vertical downward directions. Ie "wandering down the alley" etc, this just means you are following the direction/path until the end, so maybe the hall is actually sloping upwards, or maybe the protagonist is on a boat! Someone could do a drawing here. :))

Yes, down the hallway actually means that you're walking along the hallway...not down...which means that the hallway actually could be going up. I was just having too much fun with this...

I would love a Paradox thread. If somebody actually starts it - please send me a link.

Well, I don't know where you're from...in America...this is the expression:

Wandering down the hallway...walking down the hallway doesn't mean you're going down...it means...you're following the hallway...you're walking along the hallway...you're going wherever the hallway leads you to - up or down or all around...there is no discrepancy in the lyrics. Steinman loves the play of words...

RadioMaster 16 Apr 2006 20:14

yes, i already understood it, but i think this is very confusing. Thatswhy i started this thread.

R.

btw,... germany

Sometimes lyrics are confusing...the best way is to read them from the album insert slowly to yourself - people get confused about seeing your heart still beating...or about...I will do anything for love but I won't do that...but if you get confused and read lyrics - it does make sense...

RadioMaster 16 Apr 2006 20:35

Thatswhy i think itīs a good thing that Meat puts the lyrics in. Some artists dont.
For my Radioshow i translate for every show the lyrics of a song. People call me everytime on the phone and say that they never thought that the song got this meaning.
In Germany you got the problem, that only a few people really listen to the lyrics and dont hear just the syllables sung on the notes.

Well, this is understandable...but we are talking about people in Germany - English is not their native language...

What about people in America who keep on asking...what does it mean...I will do anything for love but I won't do that??? Geez...read the lyrics...English is your first language...English is my third language actually...so if I don't understand something when people sing or just hear something different from what they sing - I just go and read the lyrics - if they are not on the album insert - chances are you can always find lyrics on the web. Just type the name of the song into the google and it will come up.

RadioMaster 16 Apr 2006 20:48

youīre absolutely right!

In peoples defence... I don't think it is that obvious what THAT is to most people. I didn't realise it till I read an explanation. LOL but then it is obvious!!!

mszee 16 Apr 2006 20:56

Oh geez...people we all goofed with those lyrics...it just occured to me...

Wander down the ancient hallways...
Taking steps just one at a time...

It is not necessarily one sentence...it is possibly two. You can wander down the ancient hallways and THEN see stairs...and then take them one at a time to go to the room at the top...

I am proud to say that I got it without reading the lyrics...but by the time I got it I heard a song more than once...hahahahahaha...

In any event...I do have to listen to the song more than once...at first lyrics don't even register with me...I register instrumentals and vocals...as in music...then I start recognizing words...then I start making sense of them...

Did you have another retard like me on this forum...geez...

Ross 16 Apr 2006 20:59

LOL You are NOT a retard.

This is my way of watching TV: What did he say? What did she say? What did he reply?

I went to the specialist because I thought I am going deaf...they did extensive tests and came up with the conclusion that my hearing is way above average...they do suspect that it's something to do with the perception rather than hearing...that's why I love it here...I don't have to hear you to hear you...and I really don't like talking on the phone...
