Bad For Good - The Album
 

I am new to this website so please forgive me if this message is posted on to the wrong message board. (I have formerly used the International Fanclub site.) I have just read a message somewhere on this site concerning the song Dance in My Pants by Jim Steinman. In my personal opinion (and being a fan of Jim and Meat since the 70's) this song IS PANTS! However you can hear it on a copy of BAD FOR GOOD which can I believe still be ordered from HMV where I bought my copy about 18 months ago.

If you are interested the songs included on this album are of course all sung by Jim and are as follows: Bad for Good - Lost boys and Golden Girls - Love and Death of an Anerican Guitar - Stark Raving Love - Rock and Roll dreams come Through - Out of the Frying Pan (And in to the Fire) - Surfs up - Dance in my Pants - Left in the Dark - The Storm.

But my LP is the same as the tracklist you mentioned. Any idea why it was changed?

No idea why this is different????? Mine is dated 1981 I thought it was an original.

No, don't panic. The cd tracklist is the new one. For some reason, they re-arranged all the tracks. Why? I think the cd design is really lame. They don't even give you a lyric booklet, just a lame seperate printout of the cover and the back-cover is blue with boring, Times New Roman titles of the tracklist. I wish they would release a remastered version. That would be fantastic

i think this is a great album. The songs are fantastic. However i dont think jimmy's voice is a patch on Meats for this kinda music. Dont get me wrong, his voice is good but not compaared to Meats. :D :wink:

I agree - the songs are fantastic, proper Steinsongs. The main problem is Jim's singing.

Some tracks he's OK - on Dance In My Pants he sounds pretty good. But some songs he uses falsetto, and Left In The Dark is just pitiful.

When I first heard this cd I had a hard time getting used to it. Now I really enjoy it! lol. I have seen the video to Dance in My Pants its HILARIOUS!(cheesy too). I dont know wby but even before seeing the video to that song the song itself CRACKS ME UP! :lol: Jim has the greatest voice for those speaking parts and even though I am female I am jealous! Left in the Dark I like better with Jim then I do with Meat..sad isnt?? I do really enjoy the album as a whole in the sense that I love the piano music being right in front and being able to be heard so well ! I knwo he is a pianist and his songs are great just as such! I had always wished Meat and Jim would do an album with just Jim on the piano and Meat doing vocals. I heard OBjects done that way on the Live aroundd the world and it BLOWS ME AWAY!

No, Jim's version is so good it motivates me to put a shopping bag over my head. Meat's version doesn't even get me to go shopping!!

I'd just like to point out that Rory Dodd sings on a few of the songs on Bad For Good, most are sung by Jimmy though.

Yes that is right. Lost Boys and Golden Girls and Surfs Up have "featured vocals" by Rory Dodd.

I guess that means he sung all of them given as their appears to be transition anywhere. but hell his voice is so similar to Jim's maybe Jim does sing in parts of those songs. I have always suspected Rory to have sung all of those two songs though.

And even though it does not say it anywhere on (my copy, anyway, of) the LP and 7 inch I thikn Rock And Roll Dreams is Rory Dodd as well.

I still don't understand what was it that Jim had to sing this whole album. iIts such a waste he did it. yes i know all the stories, but it still dont make sense. He just ruined it.

I don't think he ruined it at all. Yeah his vocals weren't as good as Meats on Bat Out Of Hell but Meats vocals on Deadringer weren't that cracky either.

I think the reasoning behind Jim singing it is that they spent all this time and money in a recording studio when Meats voice went all crappy, so then they were at a point where they can either get another singer or lose what they've done. That's when Jim (with Rory's) help decided to do the album. Some of Jims best songs are on Bad For Good and that's why Meat sang some of them on Bat 2, as finished products with meat on vocal as he should have been.

However I still can't see the reasoning for not including Surf's Up on Bat 2, when it's arguably one of the best songs Jim's ever written. Meats rendition of it on Bad Atitude sucked big time.

I heard most of the songs from Bad For Good (now i just have to find somewhere i can actually buy it. is HMV really reliable? )

bad for good is a great album. the vocals by jim are really good. i can picture meat singing some of these songs. i can't see them on bat III because i look at it like this. BAT OUT OF HELL, was like this gothic type of teenage romantic rebellion thing. dead ringer also had a sound that was almost unique compared to BOOH. Back Into Hell was even though it had songs from BAD For Good, itt had almost the same qualities as the prequel, but it had more magic into it, and more songs like for crying out loud on it. which is awesome. I LOVE OBJECTS\REAR VIEW MIRROR. sry about the yelling. (cover art for these 3 describes most of the albums qualities 8) i think

As for Meat's singing, well it suited Dead Ringer finely (i think). sure they weren't as good as todays or BOOH's, but it still went great with the creative music in this piece.

some people saay that Bad Attitude, is a bad piece, but his vocals are awesome, and its just a reminder that they were gone for a little bit, but now they are back, and better than ever! :)

On the whole Bad Attiude isn't a bad album and a hell of a lot better than 'Midnight At The Lost And Found' and 'Blind Before I stop' albums. But it's the rendition of Surf's Up that annoys me. Perhaps it's the synths or something but after hearing the song on Bad For Good how it should have been done there's no comparison.

If I was to request a song for Bat 3 that was recycled then Surf's Up done properly by Meat would be it.

Surf's Up on BA is not bad at all. Its a fine production. The vocals from Meat are awesome. And i like the strings/orchestra in the background. And the guitarsolo is great. It's a different song than on BFG. So maybe we shouldn't compare. The only thing is maybe that it just misses a sensitive touch. But I agree, this is one of Jim's finest songs.

The reason somewhere here above about Jim's vocals for BFG is just one story. The other one is that Meat did not want to do vocals for an ordinary copy from Bat. And in my opnion thats the reason Meat did not sing it. How you could explain that he did vocal for Dead Ringer at the same time Jim did vocals for BFG?

And about Meat's vocals on Dead Ringer: okay, his voice is not at his best. But still he sings with so much emotion. So much better than the thing Jim did. More then you deserve, Gonna love her, Kill you, Read ém, well all these songs Meat did a great job.

Great songs, best writer, together with a great performer, the best performer. To me they are better than lennon and McCartney or anyone else.

Exactly - he may have lost some of his previous power, but he more than makes up for it with bucketfuls of emotion. My favourite Meat album. And 2500 times better singing than Bad For Good.

I think Meat's Surf's Up brings out the sexual side of the song a lot more wheras Jim/Rory's brings portrays a more sensitive/sensual side.
There both good versions but I admit the production on Meat's could've been better.
As for the album Bad For Good I've always loved it but perhaps now less than I did when I first bought it. I don't think Jim's vocals are that bad and you cannot say he ain't emotional on the songs, especially LITD.
When you hear the title track though sung live by Meat you know it was meant for him.

I know a lot of people who OPENLY and publicly dread BAD FOR GOOD. My own aunt begged me not to get it, because she had a copy and it wasn't a pleasant experience. Nevertheless, I love it - because Jim is not only an actor, but a fine performer. If anyone here is interested in more singing from this man, they should probably track down (somehow) the 3CD recording of his college musical, "The Dream Engine". He sings really good on that - "God Game" is a wonderful Stein-moment (the singer side, not the writing side, although the song is fairly ok)

Got to agree that if there's one Jim song crying out for Meats Vocals and Jims Production then it has to be Surfs Up!

And I'd second the suggestion to hunt down Dream Engine, or even the Neverland recoridng (although it's a far lower quality) if you can - some great early versions of some songs that you may well recognise ;)

NEVERLAND is not complete. Alot of Act Two is missing. DREAM ENGINE is probably the best one, and for those looking for the ultimate Steinman experience, get yourself a copy of TANZ DER VAMPIRE - Der Gesantaufhahme. It's an enthralling recording
