Ur views are needed!!

Hey Folks.
Got a couple of questions 4 u based on R.M.E at school.

First: Should the death penalty be brought back to the uk?

2. Should the age of consent in the U.K(16) be raised/lowered or kept the same?

Thank you
leeann

Rob The Badger 16 Jan 2004 19:52

Death penalty: no
Consent age: same

Chris 16 Jan 2004 19:55

Yes in a restricted form.

No

The Flying Mouse 16 Jan 2004 20:10

 Death penalty = Yes.In certain cases when the evedence is beyond dispute.(On a morbid note, when I was at primary school I wanted to be a hang man 8O i think I watched to many Westerns  )

Age= I don't think it needs to be changed, but I do think it should be inforced more  .

AndyK 16 Jan 2004 20:18

Death Penalty - No..... let them rot in a hole and not be allowed the easy way out!

Consent - No change, but there should be an IQ based test to determine if people are allowed to actually breed or not :D

No, and it should be abolished in every country that still has it. If people think that killing people for killing people is a solution, then I think there is something completly wrong.
Thank god I live in a country that does not have it, and is not considering to introduce it.

Having seen some of the youngsters coming in our shop on the way to school after having dropped their own kids off at grandparents etc, I am minded to agree. Maybe it could be taken at the hospital so if they fail, some strategic bodyparts could be left behind!!!

Yes - but only in certain cases - child killers etc. but only if the evidence is watertight. Why should taxpayers keep them in jail.

Age - should stay the same and should be enforced more.

goodhip 16 Jan 2004 22:35

death penualty yes in water tight cases ie soham moors murder they get a life of luxery while those familys suffer they should all do a shipman

age of consent stay the same young people are sensible enough now days just lay off them a bit

black dog 16 Jan 2004 22:59

No I don't think they should kill murderers because sometimes there are miscarriages of justice. How can you decide if a case is watertight? Maybe in cases where the person confesses.

No the age of consent should not be lowered. We need to stop all the underage pregnancies. You can't expect children to be able to look after babies properly. Enough adults struggle with this.

DIZZY DRUMMER 17 Jan 2004 08:17

Yes - the death penalty should be brought back - but only for cases where there is no dout about guilt eg. huntley, shipman

Age of consent should be raised (have 15 yrs old daughter - so bias) but it does not matter what the age of consent is - they will do it anyway

Rob The Badger 17 Jan 2004 09:57

I don't care what you've done, an eye for an eye is immoral in every sense. . .

heat 17 Jan 2004 10:35

Death Penalty - Yes. Absolutely. No question. As long as they can prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that the person is guilty, then the person should die.

Age of consent - Hard one. Having a niece that got pregnant at 13, then had a baby at 14, i really would have to say that the age of consent should be lowered to 14/15. Having worked extensively with children who are having sex, and seeing the consequences - a baby is the nicest thing you're gonna get from unprotected sex - i think again it should be lowered, so that the children that are having sex can make informed decisions about keeping themselves safe. A good many pregnancies and S.T.I.'s could be prevented if we only talked to our children more, instead of assuming that because the age of consent is 16, then they aren't going to have sex till they are 16 - I really think lots of parent's and teachers need reality checks on this one.

Ageing Bat 17 Jan 2004 10:41

Death Penalty - Maybe... if a convicted murderer wishes to end his / her life, then why not? Ian Brady has wanted to die for years, so why force him to live? From what I read in the papers etc, the only real punishment long term offenders have is the withdrawl of freedom of movement. They appear to live in comfort without the pressures of having to support themselves by having to work to make ends meet. Not much of a punishment if you look at it that way.

Sex Offenders - 'therapy' doesn't work - often they are released and re-offend. Removal of the urge to offend can only be achieved by removal of the warped sexual desire - castration.

Age of Consent - Where there's a will, there's a way, unfortunately. The lower the age of sexual activity the more chance there is of contracting cervical cancer in women. I know - I paid the price for the fun I had at 15, I had to have a hysterectomy at 31. I thought I knew it all at 15, I took precautions against pregnancy, but I never gave a thought to the long term health implications. Please, please think of this if you are a teenage girl reading this posting - it CAN happen to YOU. I've shared something very personal and private with you in the hope that if just one girl takes notice, then she can be shared the pain and trauma I suffered.

Heat... I understand your views to a degree ...but.... I've a daughter of 13 and although she's a big girl in body for age, she's still only 13 years old in mind.

Lowering age of consent shouldn't be done.Result in exploitation of our Kids.
I think the bad points would definately outweight any good points..and don't forget that kids at 13 are only kids wanting to be older than they are.
Surelt we should let them be kids for as long as possible as we all know whats it's like when you get older.

Fallen Angel 17 Jan 2004 12:47

You should be proud of your decision and don't let anybody try to make you change your views.

madonna123968848 17 Jan 2004 14:31

Death penalty . . . No.

Consent . . . Raised.

original sin 17 Jan 2004 14:35

1/ Yes - if there is unquestionable evidence. But then I think the whole penal system needs reviewing. Why convicted crimals should have access to small group education, when our children are stuggling sharing books between them, beats the idea of justice to me. We have people on trolleys in NHS corridors and our kids education is grossly underfunded - yet it appears to me that the prison system drains money away from those that both need and derserve it.

2/ No. It think 16 is about right.

Jayd 17 Jan 2004 15:49

1) No but feed them bread and water and stick them in their cell 24 hours a day, thats what they are there for.

2) No, 16 is fine.

I can completely understand where you're coming from Gerry, but just wanted to take up a couple of points youve made.

You mention that lowering the age of consent would result in exploitation of our kids. But they are already being exploited. Just look at the magazines that your daughter reads - odds are that it's a teenage glossy teling the child that they should be a certain size, dress a certain way and giving them tips on how to handle boys. And these mags are aimed at pre-teen girls.

It's alright US wanting our children to stay children for as long as possible, but when we live in a society that promtoes a certain stereotype of how a child should be and actively discourages non - comformity, then there isn't a great deal that we as parents and guardians can do, except give these children as much information as possible on how to keep themselves safe and how to respect themselves, so that they can then go out and make thier own informed decisions. It may sound harsh - but it's the truth. Just look at any high street in any town on a Saturday afternoon, and you'll see what i mean.

Gez 18 Jan 2004 18:08

Heat, again I disagree...at least with magazines you have a choice to buy or view, lower age of consent - you have no choice.

C'Mon we all know how our kids are nowadays, but trying to protect them from some of the ills of adulthood is our jobs as parents!!
