Meat Loaf on 100 Worst Pop Records

Did anyone see meat loaf on channel 4 tonight on the 100 worst pop records? IWDAFL got to number 60 and by god they laid into him!!!!

Complaints included:
What the f**k is "that" ?
The song is too long
Meat Loaf is fat and ugly and dint even need the makeup in the video
Theres no way the girl in the vid would fancy him
The song has no meaning
etc etc etc

Seemed very harsh especially considering they had no clue what the song was about and he was right after Hanson with "mmmbop"!! I mean, come on! hardly a comparison deserves to be there!!!!

plus they said he was canadian! news to me. texas, canda obviously!!

needless to say, didnt watch anymore!!!!!!

AndyK 01 Jan 2004 23:49

OK so they were a bit harsh... (a "bit" perhaps being an understatement) and way off the mark with accuracy, but it's wallpaper TV, cheap and cheerful and designed to be entertaining by having C List celebrities attempt to be funny about things they haven't got a clue about really.

Getting any song into a top 100 voted for by the sort of people who vote for these sort of things... ie "Joe Public" means that the song is memorable, and isn't it interesting that the vast majority of the songs featured have been Number 1 in the charts for a number of weeks?

Any song that gets consistent airplay through being popular at the time develops a groundswell of negative opinion through sheer over exposure - and in IDAFL's case it doesn't make it nay less of the great song it is.

... managing less than 23 hours of the year before he has to get the soapbox out :D

NeverKev 02 Jan 2004 00:04

I saw it too! Perhaps if the so-called celebrities involved actually listened to the lyrics they might understand it!

And anyway, since when has Meat ever sung pop songs? How about the greatest rock songs ever channel 4?

Then again, I suppose we shouldn't let ourselves get worked up over what is definitely one of the 100 worst TV shows of all time!! :D

black dog 02 Jan 2004 00:39

I couldn't believe it. It's one of my favourite songs but then I liked quite a few of the 100 worst pop songs so I must be a bit sad.

meatfan 02 Jan 2004 01:08

I saw it too.

Too many people asked what Meat meant when he said "but I won't do that" - obvious if you listen to the words of the song.

Voted number 61 on the countdown to the worst song, but thousands in America and millions world-wide can't agree with those expressing their view that it was a crap song!

I voted with my remote and switched off!

Heather.

(Also posted in "off topic" as someone posted about this there also).

Calm down people, everyone knows the media of today has no taste because taste requires intelligence and that is sadly lacking.

It's ok - you are not alone...!

heat 02 Jan 2004 06:42

Did we really expect anything better from a society that finds 'The Cheeky Girls' and 'Fast Food Rockers' entertaining??????

Bart 02 Jan 2004 09:16

Who cares about a chart. Be happy he got some airplay.

You nailed it right there Andy
Did anyone recognise even half of the so called commentators?

I too was really shocked at how insulting some of the comments were  .I know that Meat is no stranger to critisism, but this was way over the top IMHO.But it's very difficult to say "Yes, I actual like that song" funilly  , so it's much better for these cretins with no career to speak of to be as obnoxious and "witty" (although I can think of a much more appropiate word that does sound like that) as they can so they can hope to get a repeat booking next time C4 needs some senceless gawkers to sit there talking about things they have no idea about.Let's face it, if anyone needs the work, they do.

Anyway, as Bart said, the song got air time so f*** them :bicker:

End of the day, it was the biggest selling single of 1993 (from the biggest selling album 0f 1993) , and is included in much more positive polls than negative, and at a much higher position 8) .

ROSIE 02 Jan 2004 10:08

This is a wind up, right

DIZZY DRUMMER 02 Jan 2004 10:13

No sorry Rosie - was on channel 4 last night

Terri 02 Jan 2004 12:29

It was so painful to watch

....and whatever those so called 'celebrities' had to say, they can't take that away

Kev 02 Jan 2004 13:06

it was interesting that they only showed the bad comments. A few of the people there I know are meat fans, Terry Christain for example, and I wonder what the producers had to say when they only had good things to say.

dottie 02 Jan 2004 13:53

Humbug

ChrisBelfast 02 Jan 2004 14:08

the complete list is on http://www.channel4.com/entertainmen...s/results.html

Brian Adams Everything I Do is in top 20 and there's other shocks too. Along with Meat, there is a lot of good rock like songs on that list. Plus they spell Meat Loaf as 'Meatloaf', quite cluless really.

Crystal Eyes 02 Jan 2004 14:51

Just seen this! I can hardly believe it! Some of the songs in the list just make me think what the hell are people on  . I know people have covered this but I need to vent a little. I'm so glad I did not see the part with Meat Loaf but I did watch later parts and was horrified to see Bryan Adams at 14. They can't judge whether the song is actually good or not because they don't have the intelligence to listen to let alone understand it! Plus I thought it was about the song not about laying into the singer! This by no means says I think IWDATFL should be in there but there's no need to insult Meat Loaf himself!
Must go and calm down now. Think of lakes and pretty birds...

ROSIE 02 Jan 2004 15:49

I heard a debate about the programme this morning on Radio 2. Ken Bruce really slagged it off saying the only presenter he had heard of was Jimmy saville and the others, notably 12 years old didn't know what they were talking about

Rosie

Rob The Badger 02 Jan 2004 16:05

It's a pop song. . .get over it.

Tim 02 Jan 2004 18:05

That'll be the great British Public then Tim, and speaking as one of them, I can only apologise for the minority who fuelled such cheap mindless TV by voting on the CHannel 4 website and thus allowing the programme to go ahead!

needmoremeat 02 Jan 2004 20:14

It's a pop song. . .it's popular music. . .a pop song. . .it's not bubble pop, as in Britney Shperes, but it's a pop song nevertheless, like The Rolling Stones and David Bowie is pop also.
Also, Rock Opera is not a genre, it's something Steinman invented to make the songs sound better.
