Yorkshire Dales
I am taking Mrs Chairboys away for a rare break in Feb to the Yorkshire Dales. This is an area of our lovely country that I have somehow never been to.
We will have a couple of full days to do things. Does anyone have some recommendations of places to visit? We are staying just a few miles north of Skipton. |
 Busy Lizzi's fish & chip shop in Skipton.
Best fish & chips in the coutry. Fact! Haven't been there for years, but I remember how good their food was  |

If you're around Skipton area then Malham Cove is worth a visit, also Stump Cross Caverns and Brimham Rocks arent too far away. If the weather's bad then you'll either get stuck where you are or not get there, but if the roads are open then Harrogate is worth a day trip too (plug for the home town lol)
|
I marshal at various motorsport events & sometimes it feels as though I spend half of my life in the Yorks Dales. There are simply too many places worth visiting. Your best bet is simply pick somewhere to be based from & go from there.
Pickering is a good choice for a base just about everywhere is easily accessable and if you fancy a change Flamingoland & Scarborough are a few minutes away. |
You are getting Mrs. Chairboys excited! :-)
|
If you are staying round Skipton then Famingoland and Scarborough are are good 1&1/2 to 2 hrs away (they're in the Yorkshire Moors rather than the Dales).
Masham is a another Dales destination that's well worth a visit, especially if you like real ale. Home to both the Theakstons and Black Sheep Breweries, a tour round each is worth it for the free beer and the differing stories of family rivalry over the last couple of decades. |
Will probably drive to Harrogate and ask the first person I see if they know AndyK ?
|
Since the majority of my family still live there, there's a high chance that they'll say yes!

I believe Andy is also mentioned in the town's tourist pamphlet alongside those other distinguished sons of Harrogate namely, erm...?

Hugo Speer ... star of The Full Monty Numerous members of the Leeds Utd squad over its history. Gord Pettinger ... one of only 10 players in the history of The STanley CUp to win the cup with 3 differernt teams. And of course Betty, who made the finsest cup of tea in the world and started Betty's Tea Rooms. Oh and Meat's played there 3 times :)) |

Very impressive, but does it beat Wycombe's worldwide reputation for making seats out of wood?:lol: And Meat has never played the Wycombe Swan. P.S I do like a nice cuppa! |

And it was the place where Crimplene was invented. |

These places do look as though they are worth a visit. I'm sure Malham Cove has been featured on TV before! I notice some guy spent a world record 105 days in the Caverns (all in the name of science). And Brimham Rocks are National Trust owned - I took out a family membership with the NT last year and it has been THE best value buy ever. Great places to visit for nothing (except the small annual fee, of course). And we plan to visit Harrogate on the way up just to a have a brew in Bettys Tea Room! |
Yeah Malham's been featured on TV and in film loads of times. The most recent high profile film appearance is during Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows (can't remember if it's part one or two though).
Fountain's Abbey and Studley Royal are worth a trip too. |
If nature's your thing try a drive to Aysgarth Falls, absolutely beautiful, you'll recognise the place from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, they also shot at Hardraw Force (biggest fall drop in England) but I never got to go there.
|
Hey, we're only there for a couple of days!!
But, seriously, thanks for all these suggestions. A waterfall in the beer garden sounds cool! |
