Black Betty - ties that bond?

Ive always wondered why meat decided to put black betty in teh set for as lon gas he did. Its an odd song, and a black hymn. If im not mistaking, isnt this a 1800's slave song?

Ive always found meat doing this song odd, and im utterly thankful no racist remarks have ever come to fruitation.

What, exactly, do you think is the reason meat decided to do such an ethnic song?

Only Meat knows EXACTLY the reason .. but he was brought up with Gospel, has said rock and roll has its roots in the gospel the slaves sang, iit's been a hit several times, and I always thought Black Betty was believed to refer to a gun .. I'm not sure how you construe singing it as potentially racist??

and

.. it was a damn good song to have in the encore set!!

Caryl .. who if it HAD occasioned any racist remarks would have been utterly disappointed in the intelligence of those making them

Always a fun song to hear live in my opinion. Anyone who would think this a racist song is probably ignorant enough to believe that Little Black Sambo was out to destroy the very fiber of multiculturalism.

Yup, and funnily enough it was a black gun (Black Betty), this was then followed by the brown gun (Brown Bess), rumors of a White supremist movements introduction of the White Wifle were just stupid.

Yesssss!!!!

One of my favorite trivia songs. I won't bore everyone with the history of the Black Betty though ;)

ETA: The Bam-a-lam represents the gun firing.
