Surf's Up is his most underrated song, it deserved to be number 1 and it should have been put on the VBOML cd, only God knows why it wasn't. And Left In The Dark as-well.

DIST is probably the best post-millenium -ml song after PFL!

As for underrated, I always thought Meat's AKIATTTW didnt really get the recognition it deserves...
with all the demos and cast recordings there are quite a few versions of the song (not counting the lyrically similar Rory Dodd/Everly Brothers track by the same name), but none reaches the quality of Meat's version....


... except maybe for this one.

You mean apart from Pandora's Box singing it, Taylor Dayne singing it for The Shadow and the song turning into Gott ist tot for the successful Tanz der Vampire?

I agree with I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back, which lyrically borders on genius at times.

The line 'How do you abuse me let me count the ways...' is a reworking of the Elizabeth Barret Browning poem, and the 'prayer' at the end 'Bless all the girls...' which changes the whole tempo and feel of the song is just inspired.

I'd also go for All Revved Up which as recorded appears to be half the song (and half as good) compared with the early live versions. The slow intro and various monologues absent from the recorded version seem to make more sense of the manic last verse.

I absolutely agree with this post completely.

All Revved Up should at least have had the intro of the live arrangements, and preferably a monologue as well. Although I can't be the only one who's wondering why (now that the NLE has a saxophonist) we haven't heard an all-emcompassing 'perfect' arrangement on tour yet. I'd love to hear that!

I also think it's criminal that I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us was left off the VBO album. It was THE song that cemented my fandom of Meat and Jim, after Two Out of Three of course ;)

In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I think the whole Dead Ringer album is alarmingly underappreciated outside the hardcore fans (the kind that frequent this board) :)

I completely agree that Dead Ringer is a very underappreciated album. Most of the songs on it are top rate

Stating this one more time can't hurt :D I'll Kill You If You Don't Come Back, Read Em and Weep, Everything Is Permitted...well, really, the entire album is under rated.

Except for Dead Ringer for Love itself. That's massively OVER rated, in my opinion :roll:

same can best said for BBIS and BA if you ask me.

MATLAF, IMO, is over appreciated.

DIST was the first song I heard snippets of when we were waiting for the CHSIB album and I thought is sounded amazing and really got me excited for what else Meat would have on the album. I went to see Meat in Birmingham with a friend who is a casual Meat listner on the CHSIB tour and DIST was the song that they were talking about coming home. I've always been suprised Meat didn't release a live version of the song because he absolutely nailed it that night.

The live arrangement of DIST with Meat and piano initially and then the band joining Meat on stage and then gradually leaving towards the end of the song took this song to a whole new level for me.

It was possibly meant to be performed at one of the MSO shows, but wasn't. The other CHSIB live stuff was taken from the US portion of the tour, before DIST was added to the set. The only decent live version is from the Cologne radio promo concert thingy, and it's not the best. :shrug:

IMO Dead Ringer runs Bat 2 really close as the second best Meat / Jim album of all time.

Bat 2 benefited from the recycling of Jim's songs from Bad For Good and Original Sin and the 16 year wait (and hence anticipation) for a true follow up to Bat 1; while Dead Ringer suffered from the fact that Jim's best songs of the era were split between this album and Bad For Good and Meat was still recovering his voice.

Nevertheless I love Dead Ringer probably more, because of its rawness and its flaws, and despite the angst and struggle to create it, its still a brilliant album.

So I agree its alarmingly under appreciated - released under different circumstances it could / should have been a much greater hit.

When I bought CHSIB I played DIST a lot, and yes I agree it's a gem of a song. There's a lot of emotion crammed into it. I personally didn't like the music video though.

No Meat in a robe surrounded by candles didn't do it for me either!

Underappreciated how? Didn't it sell something like 5million copies? Would be nice if Meat appreciated it a bit more and sing more songs from it.

It does seem Meat has an odd perspective on his back catalogue. Dead Ringer For Love is the only song which he plays semi regularly and I can't believe that the only song from Bat 3 (which IMO is still a fantastic album) which is currently in the set is Break It.

This is pure speculation, but is Meat's opinion of an album (once he's finished marketing it) based on how much / how little he enjoyed making it ? Half the songs from Dead Ringer and Bat 3 have never been played live.

Record goes to MATLAF which only has had four songs ever played from it (Promised Land, Razors edge, If you really want to, and midnight).

Just for the record, if this speculation is true: Meat has performed every song off BBIS except "a man and a woman", "RnR Hero", and "Standing on the outside".

But if there's any album meat has kinds let alone for far too long is CHSIB. I mean, every CHSIB song in the set was basically trashed to the curb after the CHSIB tour finished. Sans Mercury Blues, which I dont count.

DR has had its whole album performed live at some point sans Everything is permitted and a non instrumental peel out.

I agree DIST is an amazing song and I would loved it to be on the MSO dvd and played at shows after the CHSIB tour.

I've always liked One More Kiss for me that's a really good and underated song, the vocals (along with Execution Day) are the best on the album imo. I also love the way it rolls into BBIS.

I second that. Did I Say That, Couldn't Have Said It Better, Testify and Love You Out Loud are fantastic songs that deserve to played and heard. :D Tear Me Down is cool, too, but I can't stand the spoken part, I prefer the Hedwig and the Angry Inch version (maybe because the wall it refers to had a huge impact on my life). Too bad that not all songs are that great, CHSIB maybe could have become one of his most important albums if they had favored more interesting tracks over tearjerkers like Because Of You. I also like the artwork a lot.
