Thing is, most people are oblivious to it. The number of people who argued on YouTube that Meat's Royal Variety Performance rendition of Blind As A Bat was not mimed was astounding. You could clearly hear that it was exactly the same as the record except towards the end when he actually started singing and you could hear his live voice.
However, most mimed performances I've seen (I'm thinking some Top Of The Pops appearances in mid 90s, Des & Mel version of CHSIB and Strictly Come Dancing version IACBTMN), were all current tracks for the time. Does seem strange to use performances that are 10 or 20 years old. Maybe he was sick and couldn't sing live - the record will be easier to lip sync to than a live track he's never sat and listened to before.
But then again it's probably only fans who notice, who have heard the studio version a thousand times and countless live versions. Even when Meat sings a song live on TV (RNRD on Des O'Conner Tonight in '94), it's never exactly the same as the record - he's a live performer.
