hi i have just got hold of a rare piece of jim steinman interview & on it it plays a video of barry manilow singing read em & weep barry where is the pasion the meaning barry you killed it it just comes to show that none of these so called stars can do a meat song . or am i expecting to much , please just leave it to meat loaf

I was given the song on 7" vinyl. Listened to it once. That was 8 years ago.

Actually, I think that version is not all that bad... okay, it's different, but since is different equal to bad?
Musically, this version has all kind of subtle touches: where Barry sings "with just a touch of a sarcastic 'thanks'", the backing vocals do also a very sarcastic 'thanks' in the background. Matter of fact: I like this version musically even better than Meat's, although I must say that I think that Meat's vocals suit the song better.

Am I the only one who thinks the Meat version gets a bit too rocky in the chorus?

Actually, the version I heard first was Barry's version and it blew me away to later hear Meat's version. To be honest I like both and I'm partial to Barry Manilow. Ok, yes I love Barry Manilow! I openly admit that. Could have killed my ex for giving away all my Barry Manilow albums (and many others along with my stereo) behind my back . . . but that's another story.

i don't mind the Manilow version, it isn't a disgrace to the song, although I love Meat's a lot more. I am not a big fan of Barry Manilow, but I have a great deal of respect for him, and i agree the song is 'different' without being awful.

I've never heard Barry Manilow sing Read em and Weep, or Barbra Streisand sing Left in the Dark, or Bonnie Tyler 2 out of 3.

And I can honestly say I don't want to. These are Meat Loaf songs and should stay that way. No other artist could possibly do them justice.

lol, fair point. They are really mostly Jim songs, althouh in our hearts they are Meat's. As long as the cheeky girls dont cover CHSIB...

Yes, and I say Meat's version is vastly superior. Jim is a brilliant songwriter but I'm afraid he just doesn't have the right voice to do justice to his own songs.

God help us. That would be even worse than Barry Manilow :roll:

I have knwon for many years that Manilow sings this song but i REFUSE to buy it, cause i know it is bad. Okay, Jim produced it, but hy, he makes mistakes too ( Take That, for example).

Streisand with Left in the dark is great though. Nice backing vocals.

And I would consider the Take That song a rather listenable track, okay, he's done better, but it was far from his worse (which would include hiring Michael C. for DotV)...

Yes, I think Bart + evil nickname must be referring to Boyzone's version of No Matter What.

I don't think Jim worked with them though. They just covered his song.

And it goes without saying that Meat's version is in a different league.

In 1995 Jim Steinman remixed/co-produced the track Never Forget for the single. He added some intro and a boy's choir I believe (I haven't heard the original)

if that's not working with them, I don't know what is... and for being in a different league, I'm not so impressed by Meat's version myself...

and on another edit: I recall Meat saying that he didn't know that Boyzone also did a version of NMW, until it was number one in the UK, thus indicating they were first, and besides that all, even Meat's version is a cover (from the musical Whistle down the Wind)

I didn't realise that Jim co-produced the Boyzone version of No Matter What.

I heard that the song was promised to Meat but something happened and it was given to Boyzone instead and Meat only found out about this when it went to No 1. Don't know if there's any truth in that though.

Meat said so on a TV show he did for TMF (The music factory, something like MTV) I have it on tape....So I guess it must be true...

I have to 'confess' I really like Take That and Boyzone (Not even ashamed of it too! :lol: ). Now don't ask me about Robbie Williams, you probibly don't want to hear it!!! :lol:

For me the Boyzone and Meats version of NMW are 2 Completly different songs! I like both, ofcourse heard it was the same song. But the emotion in both songs is SO different for me. Yes, like Meats version a lot more, doesn't mean I don't like the BZ version, 'feel' different to me. Strange isn't it, same lyrics. Think it says a lot about this voice!

Well musical taste is just that, personal taste. Don't care much for BM or BS (hmm, that sounds strange). Just don't ask me about the Russell Watson version of INS :roll: , that was a case of torturing and murdering a song. I actually listened to the whole thing, Jules couldn't bear more than a few seconds :lol:
Now I hear RW is releasing a version of BOOH...when will the MADNESS STOP! :??:
