Like a Bat out of LA

The Mail on Sunday - Property June 8th 2003

The main reason to live in LA is the weather. You can play golf all the year round-not that I get the time. I used to live in New York and I love the place, but I got tired of the cold. While touring and making monies I could accept I had to go to cold places, but I didn't want to live in the cold as well. So now I'm living right on the edge of beautiful countryside belonging to the National Game Reserve. The Santa Monica mountains are all around and because it's preserved, I know it will never change. My house is on a gold course in one of the most exclusive country clubs in LA.
From my front door you don't see a house across the streeet. The next house is a way down the street. This is big country I love the space. It took me a while to decide to move from Beverly Hills. It's a big step and everybody said "Nobody will ever come to see you- it's so far out". I'm on tour so much I'm not living there for anybody to see, anyway, and I don't have many friends, so Iwasn't looking for a drop-in place. I don't agree it's to far out-thats an illusion. I found a house I liked and told my agent to put in an offer. But I was too late-someone had put in a bid two days earlier. It seemed all the houses I was interested in were suddenly sold. Just when I decided Iwant to move here, everybody else did too. A little depressed I drove around the golf course and saw a sign in front of a house that I hadn't noticed before. But I knew the block and I thought the houses on it would cost much more money that I wanted to spend. I called my agent to find out how much they wanted. She told me the price, and it was so low I said"Read that again. Are you sure that's not a misprint?" I madean appointment to see inside the next morning. When I walked in and looked around, I was blown away. I couldn't believe what they were asking for the place. But I said to the real estate agent"This house needs so much work I'm only going to make one offer. I'm not playing the back and forth game. Either they take it or they don't. I thought the sellers would call my bluff and want money and I'd have to raise my offer, but they took it. The land alone was worth what I paid. I ended up with the house for free! Mine is the smallest house on the block only 5,000 sq ft, which I guess for some people is a big house. It has only four bedrooms. There are quite a few famous neighbours. Wayne Gretzky, the world's best ice hockey player, is one of them, plus Olympic skater Scott Hamilton. I may stay here for a while, though I'm not used to sitting in one place. I've never stayed in a house longer than five years, so we'll see.

Meat Loaf was talking to Mark Anstead.

Hi, Dottie! Thank you! Thank you!

Another great article!! Thanks for taking all the time to type it in and sharing it with all of us!

I really enjoyed it! :bunny:

Meat is all over the newspapers there! That's wonderful!!

Hope it happens here, too!!

Maybe one of the mods might want to move this to the General Forum, where the other articles are. Should brighten peoples' spirits there, as it certainly did mine!!

Thanks again, Dottie!! :D

Love,
MB

Thanks so much for posting this here Dottie !!! :D
We don't get any interviews or even much publicity down here. You might get a small bit when Meat does a concert, but that's about it !!!!

But I must say, I found his statement that he didn't have many friends very sad, maybe he meant it as a joke or something. I hope for his sake it isn't true.

Thanks again
Kaye

Goodness, Meat's "small" house is exactly 5 times the square footage of my home! I must officially live in a cracker box! (The good side to this- less to keep clean!)

Now, I'f had to calculate this to Sq meters, since I'm from Holland.

Bare with me plz, and tell me if I'm making a mistake:

1 meter = 3.28 feet
1 sq meter = 10.75 sq ft
this means that 5000 sq feet = 5000/10.75 = 465 sq meters.

My house is aprox. 200 sq meters wich means Meat's new house is more than twice as big as mine. Well, I always though I nedded a bigger house anyway   8O

Thank you for the calculating, Asha!!

Well, the man is BIG, so it shouldn't surprise us. Actually, don't think it's THAT big. As long as it's 'home', right! But if you plan to move in, I would recommend an even bigger one!

Maybe this Hartepool-house everybody is talking about is also an option?

Dottie, glad you found this!

Love,

Mariella

I think I'm correct in saying that all of us here consider ourselves to be his friends, so we should all take it in turns to visit him on a regular basis! I'm sure he'd really appreciate it!
