Some Thoughts About Live Around The World
 

It was mentioned in another thread so here are some thoughts I've had. Now don't get me wrong, I think it's a damn good album so this is mainly nit-picking! :shake:

• I would have used the Hudson Theater Anything For Love instead of the one they used. The backing vocals are louder and overall I prefer it.
• The 'quiet bit' in Took The Words should have been edited out.
• Rock And Roll Dreams is IMO the only song on the album that can be considered somewhat poor. I find it hard to believe there wasn't a better one. It was taken from the rehearsals for the Bat 2 tour.
• Paradise should have had the 3 minute instrumental edited out and should really have gone towards the end of the second disc with its goodbye speech.
• Jim sounded terrible on Wasted Youth.
• I don't understand why the slow bit of Frying Pan was cut.
• Neither do I understand why the volume was ramped up for the beginning of Hot Patootie. It's too loud.
• I think the BOOH from the Beacon Theater show was better than the one used on this album.

These things have bugged me for years!

On the flip side, Dead Ringer, HCW, All Revved Up, Objects, Midnight, Good Girls and FCOL are all awesome. :cool:

I disagree on these counts
* I like the quiet bit in TTW it helps with the overall "feel" of the song
* For the same reason I like the instrumental in Paradise

I agree on this
* Why was the piece cut from Frying pan? unless it was done just to get it short enough for the CD

I think as a whole LATW is probably one of the best compilation albums from any artist live or studio. Live is where Meat excells because he gives a good experience rather than just singing. The way he interacts with the audience for me is the yardstick for what all artists should do

Agree with everything but the quite bit in took the words.

On a side note a LATW II is in order.

The cardiff show should've been the RRD used.

Meat probably has a full blown soundboard to that show.

I like it all, with the exception of Midnight At The Lost and Found (Live and wembley version is better for me) and for crying out loud (haven't heard a live version that beats the original)

Objects is one of the best versions i've ever heard.

The other thing i'm never sure about is how much of it is from shows and how much from soundchecks, as per what meat has said about for crying out loud.

Strikes me as nitpicking really. Everyone's got their preferred performances that they've heard hear and there. All live albums are edited to some extent - usually moreso than this one.

Clapping for this thread! Why, because it's tastefully delivered regardless of whether I agree with the content or not. Finally we are moving forward.

true and most live albums made are normally overdubbed in the studio anyway. The only one recently I can think of that wasn't was Stereophonics live album and that wasn't too great imo.

I think we want live albums to sound almost perfect on some occasions, but at the same time liver performances are the best way to hear an artist or band to find out if they have "it"

Very true but hard to do anything else when the album is this good

Stand out track on LATW is the Objects Recording. beats the original by miles. and thats saying something. Objects is so powerful. On LATW I almost cry. It just worked so well with Jim's piano

I actually did cry the first time I heard the LATW version. It really is an excellent performance.

And I may be alone in absolutely loving the Rock N Roll Dreams version on LATW but I did, so there!

And I concur that Objects was an awesome version, never heard a better one before or since.

There was a better one that was released in an edited form on one of the Objects singles. I'm guessing it was also performed during the Hudson Theater show that makes up a good portion of this album.

FCOL and Good Girls are from soundchecks. RARD is from the rehearsals for the Bat 2 tour.

In which case I'd rather have had the whole song and missed out Jim's painful Wasted Youth speech.

Never understood why you hear the faint "Jim Steinman!!!" shout in the audience bit between almost all the songs. Is it just a bit of audience/clapping sample re-used to blend it all together? It sounds weird and repetitive.
I prefer live cds /dvds from a single show really as it captures the intensity better.

No you're not alone, I love the Rock 'n Roll Dreams on it as well, and FCOL is exceptional, the only better version is on the MSO DVD. The only thing I don't like on the CD is the Wasted Youth speech and always skip it. I just find it weird and can't see the point of it.

I forgot that! If they were going to use the same bit of applause they could have picked a better bit.

mabey it was on purpose. almost all the songs (all but 3) were Jim written. never noticed that before.
also meat introduces jim after DRFL. even on the redlight single and jim wasnt at Becon.

So am I the only one that likes Jim's rendition of the Wasted Youth speech on here?

I do like it but it should have been placed before Lemon instead of Frying Pan imo. Lemon was one of Meat's heaviest and rawest Rock songs in those days and fits the speech better. Frying Pan is more of a cheery happy fun fast sexual love song. The middle bit is always the highlight whenever he performs it and goes crazy like he did in Nottingham in 2008.

It's a great live compilation album, though I would have loved it even more had they included Bad For Good from the 1988 tour, and some songs from the WTTN album.
