Windows 7

The official release of Windows 7 is only a few days away and the first reviews are coming in. Here's a pretty interesting review done by Chris Bucholz: A Review of the Pirated Copy of Windows 7 :sherlock:

So in conclusion, Windows 7 is shit? :shit:

R. 02 Nov 2009 19:16

No, it actually isn't.
I have it running on a notebook and it "feels" very good.

Evil One 02 Nov 2009 19:32

Is it significantly better than XP to make it worth my while?

R. 02 Nov 2009 19:36

It's significantly better than Vista and the features around the new taskbar are pretty good, so imho it's significantly better than XP too. Needs a lot of muscle though.

samurai7 02 Nov 2009 19:46

Vista uses a heck of a lot of resources just to get running. My task manager says that 40% of my PC's physical memory (3gig) is used when it's just ticking over. Is 7 any less resource-consuming?

Evil One 02 Nov 2009 19:52

I tried Vista but it just ran too slowly so I reverted back to XP. I have plenty of muscle though!

R. 02 Nov 2009 19:56

No. IIRC it consumes roughly 1gig with no apps running.

samurai7 04 Nov 2009 17:22

about the same then.

Think I will stick with my Apple Macbook, never had any problems with OSX, can't stand Microsoft and Windows now.

mszee 05 Nov 2009 01:24

I have a free upgrade with purchase of the laptop but was afraid to install...still am actually...lol...

Evil One 15 Nov 2009 17:42

I'm taking the plunge and installing it. Hopefully I shall see you all on the other side!

Evil One 15 Nov 2009 23:46

It works. Quite quickly too!

Hypnobabe 17 Nov 2009 13:09

Any good? Hubby mentioned wanting it for Christmas...

Evil One 17 Nov 2009 13:30

It's a bit early to tell, but first impressions are that it is quite good although slightly confusing at first. It seems faster than XP and it certainly looks better. I haven't had any problems so far. I did have to spend the best part of 6 hours downloading updates though.

AndyK 17 Nov 2009 15:37

In my experience no Windoze OS is any good.

Although since we're pretty much tied to them for many applications, the latest Windoze OS isn't usually fully fit for purpose until they bring out a Service Pack (or two!). I won't be touching it until it's been around for a minimum of 8 months and had multiple fixes applied to the no doubt multiple vulnerabilities that there are within it (and knowing M$ many of these will be identical to vulnerabilities that have been found and fixed in both XP and Vista).

It's been a couple of months now and I've still yet to experience any problems whatsoever, so I'm calling it a success.

Excellent. Thanks for the update :-)

mszee 26 Dec 2009 15:55

I already have my upgrade at home...but I am still VERY afraid...lol

Hypnobabe 27 Dec 2009 16:03

Hubby upgraded his yesterday... says that at the moment, he's not really noticing the difference, but he's not had that much time to play with it yet...

God Mode

For Windows 7 "God Mode" try this:
  1. Create a folder
  2. Rename the new created folder to this exact string "GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}"
There you have it, a folder with all of your control panels.
