John!

Just a quick one, this may have already been asked but, has anyone any ideas why John is not used very ofter for Studio recording?

meatloaf-unofficial 20 May 2008 14:39

good question. perhpas he's busy doing other projects or just preferes to be doing live drumming than to studio drumming

Deb 20 May 2008 14:45

Or perhaps he does get used :D just not always credited :??:

I thought though, when you do any cd, like I'm experiencing, you have to credit everyone, don't you??

Oh yeah, you prob would of. Sorry been a long morning - I've had Higher Maths. It was bloomin' awful!! Everyone thought it was really hard... (I need a miracle to pass)

djfierce 20 May 2008 15:30

the music industry is and has always been full of little and big injustices. I guess this is one of those things musicians just get on with

allrevvedup 20 May 2008 17:07

who knows who gets credited for what...Clapton played on a number of Beatles songs without getting credit for it.

I think Kenny Aronoff is renouned for being one of the best studio drummers around so maybe it's just simply a case of when he's available he's first choice for the studio.

Doesn't John have his own Drumming school?

Deb 20 May 2008 17:09

No John hasn't got his own drumming school. But he has taught at drum schools in the past

allrevvedup 20 May 2008 17:29

ah that must be where I got it from...i knew I partially read a tour programme for a reason!

Couch Potato 20 May 2008 17:42

I did once read somewhere he had a school in new York!! Iam certain it was in the 99 best of tour programme!
Id love to be a studio drummer.
Clapton never played on any beatles numbers, he did however play on some lennon material and harrison stuff but never any beatles numbers!

Deb 20 May 2008 17:47

Couch Potato, You did see that he taught in the 99 tour book, but it didn't say it was his :-)

Thanks Deb...

Are the books said above available? Sounds interesting!

Deb 20 May 2008 18:01

Actually one of them will be available VERY soon through John's website  off the top of my head I think it's the 'Sticking in the foot' one :D I've been waiting for these books to become available for yrs so am VERY excited about them being available soon :-)

Deb

As the tourbook says "drum instruction books", I'd say yes.

from wiki...which i admit is to take it with a pinch of salt

"The close friendship between Clapton and Harrison resulted in Clapton's playing on Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the Beatles' White Album"

RadioMaster 20 May 2008 20:54

and to the original question:

maybe he isnt used on records often because he isnt good enough ....

Debbie is gonna kill me now lol

(just kidding btw)

AndrewG 20 May 2008 21:57

If there is a reason other than not being available I don't think it is a matter of being not good enough more so just specialised in a different area I'd say. Playing live and playing in the studio are just different things, maybe John does not even want to do this on like 15 songs, who knows. Some people apparently cringe at the thought of being a session/studio musician. Even Meat has said on numerous occasions he hates working in the studio, obviously he can't be swapped! Interestingly Steinman never wanted to use the band members on the albums and this was one of the reasons that caused a rift between Meat and Jim in the late 70s/early 80s.
Also other band members (Eddie Martinez, Tim Pierce etc etc) get swapped all the time on Meat's albums as is the case with most other artists really. Only if we are talking bands is the line up usually the same in the studio and live, that's why they are bands and not individual artists obviously. :))

duke knooby 20 May 2008 23:19

chip bailey is the best

Couch Potato 21 May 2008 10:36

I presonaly think John is a great drummer live, ive seen many good drummers, Steve Gadd being one of them, but maybe John is'nt suited to much studio work.I know being in a studio is a pain, esp when its 4/5 weeks running going over and over the same songs!
But with regards to bands/solo artistes Clapton uses the same band in the studio as he does live most of the time, I guess it preferences on the performer and the musician.
I am sure there is a valid reason, maybe John could answer himself?!

Deb 21 May 2008 10:46

John does do plenty of studio work. For Meat and many other artists. I guess it's just a job people get paid for and don't always get credit for.

But yep John answering would be cool  I think i heard somewhere he has plans for a chat at some point soon. So maybe you could join in and ask him yourself :-)

For me John is the best drummer live and in the studio  Infact he's the best full stop :-P

And yes Anji a detour with Renardo would be good
