Meat Loaf trivia
Don't know if this was ever posted - can't find anything like this on the forum...
Is it true that Meat Loaf was offered the title role in "Phantom Of The Opera" but turned it down? Thanks! |
Yes, it is true. He told of this in one of his interviews. He turned it down because he didn't like the music of Phantom.
wow, didnt know that.
Even more interesting as Jim turned down writing the lyrics. |

He was offered the Broadway show; that is what he mentioned in the interview.

I suspect he meant it was a good thing Meat decided not to do Phantom as he didn't like it; thinking it was the movie he meant. I may be very wrong, but he might have considered the movie, where it would have been a one-shot deal on the music; but doing something you don't like every night made his refusal come easy, I imagine.
Maybe I am wrong but I am not sure his voice is right for this part???
I don't remember if Meat said in the interview if he was offered the premier of the Broadway show, or to come on after Michael Crawford. If he had been offered the premier, he could have created the role to fit himself. I could just imagine what that would have been like, with Meat's acting skills with the music. Out of sight, it would have been.
And I just can't imagine him in that role...sorry...:(
didnt like the movie, it had just too much of everything, and the focus could have been much more on the phantom and not on christine.
Bought the recording when it was on special offer and still didnt come to listen to it. Something great on the other hand is the few recordings of Steve Barton doing MOTN and POTO. |
Yes he was offered the role of the Phantom but he turned it down because it was 'boring', he apparently took some friends to see it and they fell asleep so based on that he deemed it as boring and turned it down.
HUH? ML playing the role of the Phantom.....You mean to tell me the film version which Gerard Butler did? I love this film and I think GB did a great role, loved it all, but can't see ml doing the part sorry but that's the truth.
I agree with zina i don't think it would've suited him. Maybe before Bat 1 but the battering that his voice took on that tour meant that any chance of a taking part in a show that runs every night for 4 or 5 months would kill the voice altogether
Opps me bad.... I thought you were talking the film but I agree maybe in his younger days but not now.

I honestly thought it was the film role that Meat turned down, not the stage role, because I seen this article a few year back in a tabloid newspaper if my memory serves me well, about it being offered to Meat, but he had not give an answer at that point of time. :D
wasnt the film role offered first to Antonio Banderaz?(sp?)

But I do see Antonio as a lead in Phantom...I've seen him live on Broadway and he is truly magnificent...even more so than on a silver screen...classically trained actor forever pegged as Zorro because of his accent...not much of a surprise... |

This is slightly off topic here, but I seem to remember an interview on The Big Breakfast (many moons ago) where Meat said for the Hunchback Of Notre Dam movie he was providing the voice of the hunchback. Never ever heard anymore about it though. Anyone know what the story was with that?
