Meat Loaf covers?

I was just wondering which songs of Meat Loaf's have been covered by other artists. I know of two......... Barry Manilow- Read 'em and weep and Bonnie Tyler- Two out of three ain't bad.

Thanks

Wario 26 Jan 2007 02:11

Uhh the entire Tribute to Meat Loaf album and a band did Nowhere Fast , forget their name :(

samurai7 26 Jan 2007 02:21

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did a cover of Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad. Still haven't managed to track this down myself yet though.

Sarah Geronimo did a cover of I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Wont Do That)

Karla DeVito did an amazing version of Heaven Can Wait.

Russel Watson did Is Nothing Sacred?

There's more, but my brain hurts to think.

I assume you mean Boyzone doing No Matter What? That was actually before Meat's version. Johnny B. Goode is a song originally by Chuck Berry from the 1950's. It's been done by THOUSANDS of people.

Oh, and Zina - you do realaise Ms Streisand's version of LITD was 11 years before Meat's, right? ;)

Actually I didn't...

I did know that Elaine Caswell was before Meat with IACBTMN - didn't put it in...

Well, at least I know something, right?

Gotta give you props for that one. Elaine was also before Celine (who was also before Meat, but we're not allowed to say that out loud ;))

We are not allowed to even mention Celine's version...who's Celine???

I've heard Caswell last March singing IACBTMN...she is still incredible...

samurai7 26 Jan 2007 04:22

Yes she is. The Pandora's Box version is still the best version out there, in my opinion. There are two (count 'em) fantastic gutar solos, and the best background vocals I've ever heard. I really wish MEat had done something similar with his version, but hey-ho - that's a conversation that's already been worn out.

Anyway, my head hurts, so I'm off to bed (after all, it's 3:20 am here! )

Pandora's Box version is STILL the best for me...

Good night...

Meat does a lot of cover himself, let alone covers of his songs.

Lets see, he did:

  1. Johnny B. Goode
  2. River Deep Mountain High
  3. Presence of the Lord
  4. Stand By Me
  5. The Promised Land
  6. The Rock Medleys - there are a lot he did
  7. Dixie
  8. Jail house Rock,
  9. American Trilogy
  10. Louie Louie
  11. Good Golly Miss Molly
  12. Devil With A Blue Dress On
  13. We Are Family
  14. We Will Rock You
  15. Lawyers, Guns, and Money
  16. Mercury Blues
  17. Honky Tonk Women
  18. I Love Rock'n Roll
  19. Heartache Tonight
  20. 1999
  21. Forever Young
  22. Black Betty
  23. Take Me Out To The Ballgame
  24. Bad for Good
  25. Lost Boys and Golden Girls
  26. Love and Death and an American Guitar (Wasted Youth)
  27. Dance In My pants
  28. Out of the frying pan
  29. The Storm
  30. Rock'n Roll Dreams
  31. Good Girls Go To Heaven
  32. Surf's Up
  33. Just Wont Quit
  34. Original Sin
  35. Its all coming back To Me Now
  36. Roll Over Beethoven
  37. Let It Be
  38. Come Together
  39. Oh what a beautiful morning
  40. Blue Christmas
  41. Run, Run Rudolph
  42. Silent Night
  43. Rudolph the red nosed Reindeer
  44. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire

evil nickname 26 Jan 2007 09:20

You're missing a few covers Meat did:

45. Left in the Dark
46. Martha (Tom Waits)
47. Tear Me Down (Hedwig & The Angry Inch soundtrack)
48. Do It! (Billy Rankin)
49. If It Ain't Broke, Break It (MTV's Wuthering Heights soundtrack)
50. Seize The Night
51. The Future Ain't What It Used To Be
52. Home By Now / No Matter What (Whistle Down The Wind, Boyzone)
53. A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste (Whistle Down The Wind)
54. Whore (Mother Superior, Pearl)
55. Come Back To Sorrento ("opera classic")
56. Somebody Loves Me (Gershwin)
57. 16 Tons (The Company Store) (on the 1999 tour)
58. It's Only Rock and Roll (But I Like It) (segued into after "We Are Family" in 2003)

You could even start discussing if "Hot Patootie" and the other Rocky Horror tracks should be considered a cover, as Meat wasn't in the original 1973 London cast.
And then there are some more covers done live (I Love Rock N Roll, Mony Mony, Guilty, Oh Darling) sung by Patti, Pearl, John Golden, etc.

RadioMaster 26 Jan 2007 18:20

that brings us back to the old arguement what´s a cover and what isnt....

djfierce 26 Jan 2007 19:15

well i have always considered a cover to be a song delivered by anybody but the very first person to perform it

That's what I consider cover too...no matter how successful or otherwise the original artist was...

RadioMaster 26 Jan 2007 19:20

JIm Steinman is the best example.
He gives the same songs to a number of people, but which is a cover?
The one that wasnt recorded at first?
The one that wasnt published at first?
Think of No matter what, what´s the original? Meat? Buyzone? the WdtW cast album?
On the other hand there´s the problem that Jim is 'cutting' every song he produces together from earlier songs, or pieces of songs, published or not published.
The you got the things with the demos too.
I gave up to try to get to know which Steinman song is a cover/original.

That's how I would decide if a song was a cover or not...who recorded No Matter What first, Boyzone or Meat? I'm inclined to say Boyzone...

Lord Kagan 26 Jan 2007 20:20

Anyone know where I could get We will rock you?

AndyK 26 Jan 2007 20:21

As far as I know, you're right Lucy, I'm pretty sure Boyzone recorded No Matter What first for the WdtW concept album , the same album that A Kiss first appeared on. Of course only Jim and Meat and the studio engineers, the band, a handful, or record company people, the cleaner and a few others will know for sure which was actually physically recorded first. There's also a slim chance that they were recorded at exactly the same time ... End of the day Boyzone certainly were associated with the song first publicly.

samurai7 26 Jan 2007 20:35

No Matter What was initially given to Boyzone's Stephen Gately by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was intended as a solo recording, and not thought about in terms of single release, just a contribution to the concept album for WTTW. Then when Boyzone's record company heard it, they insisted on making it a 'band' effort (even though only Stephen and Ronan sing on it, same as nost Boyzone records  ) and pushed for single release. It then went to number one for something like 8 weeks (haven't got my book to hand to say for sure.)

That's why it says it was recorded in London AND LA - because bits were added later, and it was remixed.

At roughly the same time, Jimmy gave the song to Meat, with the same intention - record it for the concept disc. For some reason, Boyzone's version was chosen to go on (perhaps cos it was a HUGE smash hit ;)) the album, and Meat' s version was kept for the Very Best Of album, which came out shortly after. Meat's planned single release was shelved in the UK. It was, however, released as a double-A with 'A Kiss...' in continental Europe.

The actual first release of the song is apparently on an Elaine Paige album , so I've heard, but I've never managed to track this down.

Can we remind everyone that the open trading or linking to any of the bootleg recordings that exist is not allowed on this site.
