Question for a friend.
 

A friend of mine would like an answer to the following questions:
1. was Jim Steinman at the concert Meat did in Ahoy Rotterdam in 1994
2. Did he play the piano during "Heaven Can Wait"


See, I was there in 1994 and so was this friend. And he remembers that Steinman was there and played the piano.
And I have no recollection of that. So weird...

Does anyone have the answer?

Heaven can wait. Recorded in Rotterdam 1994.

Yeah I have that DVD too but dunno if its Jim on piano. Whoever it is is very good, brilliant performance.

My question: who is the performer of "Wasted Youth" on Live Around The World CD?

To answer question 1: I don't know, but there is a recording of Jim playing the piano for Heaven Can Wait (Meat introduces him) on Live Around The World. And it sounds to me like Jim performing Wasted Youth (to answer the other person's question).

I've always assumed it was Jim on that version of Wasted Youth, but I have to say thats my least favorite song on that CD. It seems to jar the flow of the rest of the CD, but that's just my opinion.

The cd booklet says the narration was done by Jim.

Sure you know by the sound of the voice it's Jim.
I presume it was recorded at the Beacon theatre theatre, and the time of the release of BatII.

I was there too back in 1994 both nights. Jim Steinman wasn't there. There was only Mark Alexander. Great shows by the way :D

Yeah, was a great show, too bad I couldn't get arena tickets and had to sit in one of those seats (which I couldn't, fear of hights) so I stood on the first floor somewhere. :?

Its worth noting, Steve Buslowe I think it is (Bass PLayer with Bandana) did versions of Wasted Youth.... though... I think its Jim Steinman on the Live around the World CD, if only for the adlibs and when comparing it to "Teenager In Love" prologue to the Pandora Box album.

On live around the world, if that is the concert you went to, At the end of Dead Ringer, Meat Introduces:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr Jim Steinman.... we'd like to do, Heaven Can Wait".

Then a wonderful redition, probably my favourite piano solo is that entire song. Could listen to it with or without the vocals. :) DVD "Classic Albums" has Heaven Can Wait at the end of it, is that from your concert? Think thats Mark Alexander (and Steve Buslowe on bass).

In 1994 some kind of guy with a beard and long hair did wasted youth.

Jim wasn't playing the piano in Rotterdam.

Jim did Heaven Can Wait and Wasted Youth on Live Around The World, both recordings are recorded in New York september 1993.

I don't suppose anyone knows of any decent avi/mpg's of said Beacon Theatre performances...?

Jim Steinman, 1983? I wasn't even aware they were talking at that time. Jim would have been busy with Nosferatu (incomplete musical) and Total Eclipse of the Heart.

I'm always amazed how you throw random irrelevant facts into a topic and make out it has some relevance. Jim would have been busy in '83 with Bonnie Tyler, Air Supply and probably Streets of Fire.

But them aside, I think Cult Of Byron was referring to the Meat Loaf concert at Beacon Theatre in 1995. I have that but at this moment I have no way of sharing.

Accordng to an interview Jim Steinman worked on a musical of NOSFERATU which is where the song Total Eclipse Of The Heart originates (that and the second failed attempt to create BAT OUT OF HELL II in 1982)

i was also in Rotterdam, and i am sure that it wasn't Jim Steinman. Great show!!!! i was there with a very good friend of mine who new meat loaf only from paradise. I gave here the music a week before the show began, because i thought: you gotta sing!!!! Well she did, louder than me! Since that day she and her 12 year old daughter are fans also.

WTF are you talking about? How the hell do you go from Steinman supposedly writing a musical called Nosferatu (links to article please or interview) to that being a second failed attempt at Bat Out Of Hell 2?

I'm referring to the concert where Jim played piano on Heaven Can Wait and Objects... I thought this was in 1993/94 to publicise Bat 2, although I could be wrong. If anyone knows for sure when this was and if it was ever broadcast/recorded then I'd love to do something about it.

As mentioned, at the end of the Classic Albums dvd of Bat Out Of Hell, there is a clip from the Rotterdam concert where Meat does a heavenly rendition of "Heaven Can Wait" with the audience joining in. It looked like Mark Alexander was playing the piano for this. What Cult of Byron is looking for must be from another concert.

Yes, it is the one that is featured on Live Around The World, with Jim playing on a grand piano with flames painted on the side (I have seen photo's of it). If anyone has a recording of these songs on video/dvd/movie file I'd be very grateful to hear from you.

I've never heard of it being recorded on video or whatever, but I assume that it would.

I'm still trying to find out exactly when and where the audio version (Heaven and Objects) was recorded! I've got a feeling that it was a VH1 thingummy.

I don't think there was ever a VH1 show with Jim accompanying Meat on those 2 songs. They were recorded, as Michel said earlier, at the Beacon Theatre on Broadway. Meat played 4 nights there on the 17th, 18th, 20th and 21st Sept. 1993. I can't remember if Jim accompanied Meat for those songs on all four nights. The only televised evidence I've ever seen was a short clip on one of the American news channels. Maybe more of that show was filmed ...... would be fantastic if that surfaced one day!

There was a buzz that Jim was going to appear on stage with Meat on some of the European dates during the 1993/94 tour. Sadly that never materialised but he did attend some of the shows.

If I can remember right there were two Live-Shows (or maybe just one?) in New York in July 1993.
On the singles from BAT II are these Live-Songs....

I've just looked again at what I posted earlier about the 4 NY shows in 1993 and spotted that I said they were played at the Beacon Theatre. They were actually played at the Hudson Theatre. Sorry. :oops:

Part of the show was broadcast on the radio in America and "Objects" with Jim on piano was one of the songs.

Thanks Diane, there is a dvd currently on sale on Ebay (although I suspect it is a video-to-DVD copy) called the History of Meat Loaf, I asked the seller direct whether the 2 songs feature Jim on piano and he said yes... am tempted to buy as there seems no other source for these recordings. But thanks for clearing the dates up for me!

Sounds like you're talking about the MTV History Of Meat Loaf show from 1993/4 (can't remember the date off the top of my head). If it is then it's Mark Alexander on piano.

No. This was a tv satelite broadcast throughout the USA one day before the release. It was unique.

Wasn't Live Aid beamed around the world via satellite and couldn't people watch it on their TV's then? I'm failing to see the difference. Also, how long has MTV been up and running? I'm sure they must have shown a live concert or two pre 1993

Do you mean the live link from LA when Meat sang "Anything For Love"? I watched Top Of The Pops especially to see this and it was just amazing. This was both before the album and video for AFL was released.

It was an unusual piece of marketing to release the album before the first single, but the strategy worked beautifully. :D
