70. Is Nothing Sacred

This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic.
Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!

Is Nothing Sacred (8)

This is the second new song from on The Very Best Of and I think the worst. The melody seems to me a little bit forced. I have got Karine Hannah's and Céline Dion's version and there are sames. In the clip the gospel chorus is strange. But I like the orchestra...
And a question: Can Pearl play on chello or is she imitating?

I don't know have you got the casette but there the song isn't as same as on CD. I think the casette version is better...

My score: 8

Average: 8.11 (113.5/14)

Re: 70. Is Nothing Sacred

Great song.

Beautifull music, powerfull lyrics.

I'd give it a 9!!!!!

Cloggy 14 Apr 2003 19:57

9/10

White of High 15 Apr 2003 10:26

I wrote the cassette version is better than CD version but I miss there the orchestra "solo" at the end!

Michel 15 Apr 2003 23:28

He sings this song amazing. Patti also.

The song is good, the lyrics are great.

My score: 8/9

JacenSolo 22 Apr 2003 00:04

It really depends on which version we're rating, the album version is a bit on the boring side to me.
My Score: 5
The single version/duet is great!
My Score : 8

Have listened to this again before posting a reply, & it still makes me cry very powerful & moving.

Bart 29 Apr 2003 23:32

I just don't know about this one. I think it is good, but sometimes i think it is not. Somehow it doens't sound like a JS song. It is a song which is good, but i don't have the shivers down my spine. I miss something there.

7/10.

heat 29 Apr 2003 23:41

This song always makes me cry - makes me wonder 'what might have been.....'

8/10

wow, how opinions can differ, the only version i've ever heard is from meat's greatest hits album and yet it is one of my favourite meat loaf songs of all time. if the single version's that much better then i'll have to get on ebay!

Louise 02 May 2003 11:46

I liked I s Nothing Sacred on the Greatest Hits album, but not A Kiss is a Terrible Thing...... I always skip that one.
White of High, please tell me you're joking when you say Celine Dion did a version of INS??! 8O I hope I never hear it!

White of High 02 May 2003 11:53

Very good version!
I love Céline's voice!
This version want to be from DOTV in Broadway.
If anybody need send me a PM!

And I have Karine Hannah's version too.

RSG 22 Aug 2003 01:09

IS NOTHING SACRED

This is an awesome song. I really like it. Did Steinman write it? or did he write the music? I know he did one of them.

I would give the the The Very Best Of Meat Loaf version an 8.5
and I would give Vh1 Storytellers a 9.5!!

evil nickname 22 Aug 2003 09:58

Celine Dion did record a version of INS with Jim Steinman, for her "Let's Talk About Love" album. AFAIK, that version never would have been in DOTV, that's just a rumour... because, ah well, read it yourself.
I'm not that thrilled about her version too by the way...

Then we have Karine Hannah's demo... musically, it sounds just like Celine's version, and even vocally it isn't that different.... also not my favorite...

Russell Watson did a version produced by Jim Steinman, but that version got shelved, and he used another take on his album. Not my cup of tea.

Meat did it reasonably well on TVBO. I'm not alltogether that thrilled about the song, but his version is okay 7/10

The Duet/Single version is imo the best, a) because it is the shortest version around, and b) because Patti is doing a terrific job... good, but still not my favorite. 7.5/10

RSG: Is Nothing Sacred? Music: Jim Steinman, Lyrics: Don Black

Crystal Eyes 22 Aug 2003 17:03

I've just listend to the Storyteller's version and ... wow! It's amazing! I think it deserves 9.5. Though I still like the album version and think it follows closely behind with a 9/10

dottie 22 Aug 2003 23:02

Listen to the lyrics.. If a love as strong as ours, couldn't make it all the way. If a love so deep and true, couldn't stand the test of time... Is forever just another word? Never thought a heart could break without making sound.. for the lyrics alone 10/10 - a heartbreaker

PanicLord 22 Aug 2003 23:32

I like the singing on this song, but there definitely is a little something missing - maybe it's because the lyrics are not Steinman, (although they come quite close), just a bit too sickly sweet, if you see what I mean!

Anyway, not bad, Meat's fantastic, don't think I've ever heard the duet?

Jim must be raking it in - surely one of the most covered songs ever :)

8/10.

little_dancer 16 Sep 2003 00:10

WOW,
It's a REAL heartbreaker...it makes me cry every single time...I have a friend who is in the middle of a very amicable divorce, they've been together for just over ten years, and this song just kills her...

She was saying that it perfectly captures the sad futility of trying to rekindle love between two people that have, simply, grown apart..It's nobody's fault, and nobody is angry, but that makes it hurt even more, somehow...

Chocolate cherries? Why?

Quigmo 17 Sep 2003 01:28

I am only familiar with the Story Tellers version - not one of my favorites but not a bad song. 7/10

Skeleton 24 Apr 2004 22:38

Beatiful song. There´s so much power in the lyrics. Touching.

9,5/10

rockfenris2005 25 Apr 2004 14:25

Besides the songs in More Than You Deserve, this is the most strangest and non-Steinman stuff I've heard from the guy. You wouldn't think, in a million years, that Jim wrote the tune. It's weird. In my script of Dance of the Vampires, it's a duet with Sarah and Alfred. I still don't know why they cut it. I think it would've worked. Oh well, 8/10. It's very emotional

KebLou 25 Apr 2004 14:33

I think its a brilliant song, I loved it the first time I listened to it, so I will give it a score of 9.5/10 , I prefer the version on the greatest hits, although the one on Storytellers is interesting.

Yes, she can

Rob The Badger 08 May 2004 17:26

I think it's dire. But for the nice imagery in the lyrics I'll give it a 5. Because I'm feeling generous.

RadioMaster 07 Jul 2006 23:36

Hmmm, same quality as Not a dry eye...

The thing that confuses me is that I´ve got the solo version on my best of and in the video it´s a duet with patti.

Hypnobabe 09 Jul 2006 23:17

I love this song... I don't know anything about mixing or mastering or production or anything technical at all... but I love this song

Jackoutofhell 10 Jul 2006 09:04

Love the solo version, the duet drives me crazy.

Solo = :D

Duet with Patti =

Gina 11 Jul 2006 01:19

Where is there a duet version of this? On the Best Of cd? Thanks!

Paul191 11 Jul 2006 02:17

Single version - 10/10

Album version - 8/10

Chris 11 Jul 2006 03:03

I much prefer the duet version of this song. Absolutely love it.

I agree - the duet (which I only just heard) has a bit of extra "oomph"! I love this version even more and would give it 9/10.

gotham_child 24 Jul 2006 21:55

is nothing sacred?

i got asked to sing this at a memorial service for a freind... must admit i messed it up couldnt stop crying... thats the raw emotion of the song. I love it. it's not my fave tho but it's nearly there...

scores 8 from me.

The duet version doesn't really make sense. The lyrics are "And you thought that I'd save you, Could have sworn that you'd save me!" In the single version, Patti sings the "And you thought..." bit and Meat sings the "Could have sworn..." bit, which makes no sense, as they're both saying the same thing to each other. The solo version makes more sense, but the remixed backing track is preferable from the single version. However, Patti's voice is great on this song. I'm pretty torn between the two, but overall it's not my favourite. 7.5

Evil One 24 Jan 2007 00:02

6 for the solo version, 5 for the duet.

White of High 07 Jun 2012 17:12

Have you ever noticed this song has 3 versions? CD, duet and casette. The last one is shorter than the CD one but solo. Anyway...

Average: 7.85 (188.5/24)

ShelbyLee 07 Jun 2012 19:34

Are we rating the solo version or the duet version? I give the solo version a 9 and the duet a 10. The performance on the Storytellers tour was incredible.

JennaG 07 Jun 2012 21:44

I'm not a huge fan of the solo version and I feel that the song is better with the addition of having a female voice singing some of the parts.

I love the duet version and there's not a single thing I'd change about it. The musicians are good and the vocals are spot on.

ninja 08 Jun 2012 01:41

love the duet version with patti :D

Reading this thread inspired me to look up Meat's solo version for the first time in ages. I heard it once, didn't really like it for some reason, and went back to listening to the duet version (which is incredible).

Thank you for giving me a reason to go back to it! I've been missing out all this while, it's like I suddenly stumbled on an entirely new song from Meat at his prime. Awesome surprise. It feels a little empty at points, but I think that's just because I'm used to the overblown production of the duet. The thing that stood out to me are the vocals. Meat's voice is just absolutely stunning. I can't even remember the last time I got shivers listening to a song, but...wow. He hits some incredible notes here.

I'm obviously too late to vote, but the solo version gets a 9 from me, and the duet version gets an 8. They're both amazing, though. Nothing beats Meat singing a good ballad :P

Smithie 08 Jun 2012 18:18

10 for the duet. I like the video too. The video is simple but effectively captures the emotion of the song, even better than some of the big productions.

RSG 09 Jun 2012 00:31

I prefer Solo to the Duet.
