From The Stage at http://www.thestage.co.uk/news/newss...ariety-line-up

West End shows dominate Royal Variety line-up

Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Take That will appear alongside stars from West End shows Spamalot, The Sound of Music, Avenue Q and Wicked, at this year’s Royal Variety Performance.

The annual show, in aide of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund and now in its 78th incarnation, takes place at the London Coliseum on December 4 in the presence of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Rocker Meatloaf will be making his Royal Variety debut singing songs from his new album and a classic duet with a surprise guest. Pop stars the Sugababes, the Puppini Sisters and James Morrison will also feature.

At the event BBC winner Connie Fisher and the Von Trapp children will perform a medley from The Sound of Music, while Doctor Who and Torchwood’s John Barrowman will put on a forties-style performance.

Comedians Ken Dodd, Omid Djalili and Jason Byrne will appear at the event, while other guests include Katie Price and Peter Andre, Paul O’Grady, Vernon Kay, Noel Edmonds and Patrick Swayze.

I have a better idea  - well 2 really
  1. Patti Russo will do a special duet with Meat
  2. Jim Steinman will fly over and do a Ultra Special Duet with Meat (ie : Him on Piano in Object In The Rear View Mirror) - A way to say that Jim and Meat are back together

Does this mean he will be singing more than one song ??? I hope so - The Monster Is Loose should be done along with Blind As A Bat and oviously It's All Coming Back To Me Now will be done !!!!

This will be so fun to watch - special guest is Meat ??

Much as I'd love for it to be Patti, it ain't likely. You'd more likely see Jim and that's a long shot.

I just hope they give Meat a decent amount of airtime to do the songs justice!

This would be fantastic but Tim Curry doesn't have anything to do with Rocky now he's sick to death of it and understandable if you read the interviews since that movie, every one brings up the fishnets etc and it got to the point where he no longer want's anything to do with it, the last thing he did was The 15th Anniversary Rocky Convention which is on the DVD and I love it.

"How'd You do I! It's so nice to know
that there are people out there, sicker
than I am!"

:lmao:, that quote is brilliant. And Judy I agree it would be absolutely awesome to see Meat and Tim together again but this isn't going to happen in the forseeable future sadly.

Marion for IACBTMN? I wouldn't class her as a "surprise guest". Oh well, we'll see soon enough. :D

SuperLoafMan 09 Nov 2006 12:00

It does say song's from the new album then a classic duet so he may well do IACBTMN but I think the classic will be one of his older songs, AFL? DR? Paradise? Just thinking of the ones with a female vocalist,

Yeah this is exactly what I was thinking SLM. I'm convinced it'll be one of the 3 you've mentioned.

meatloaf-unofficial 09 Nov 2006 13:49

I think we need Meat's word on this to put us all in the spot light - tell us whats true and what ain't! :-)

What's true is
Meat is appearimg in the Royal Variety Show this year .. which is marvellous, and exciting :)
It will be televised as always after the event .. so we'll all be able to see it, either at the time or through later seeing what someone has captured from the TV :)

What may well be probable is that, like most performers on the RVS, he won't want to say before the show exactly what he's going to do on the night!

Caryl

LucyK! 09 Nov 2006 17:02

I can't see it being anyone like Jim etc, as that would only be a "special guest" for Meat Loaf fans...

Just hoping they haven't got some crappy "famous" female singer in to do IACBTMN

Maybe Celine 8-O

AndyK 09 Nov 2006 17:34

So, who said it has to be female? Who says it has to be one of Meat's songs?

It could be a bloke duetting on a classic recorded by someone else. I'm guessing we'll have to wait and see it on TV ...

daveake 09 Nov 2006 17:50

I'm betting it's Cher doing DR.

But I could be wrong :-)

Bonnie?

Dave

RadioMaster 09 Nov 2006 18:17

cher was my thought too

The Flying Mouse 09 Nov 2006 18:25

 To be billed as a suprise special guest, it has to be someone well known.

Patti?
Jimmy?
Marion?

Hardly household names (even though well known in our own circles)

So who?

Fisrt person to cross my mind is Cher.

It's a duet, and Cher is the only famous person Meat has done a well known duet with.

But I don't know if Cher would be up for it.

It would be one HELL of a hot ticket to see them together after all these years 8)

Bonnie?

Could be.

She's always been linked to Meat for some stranger reason, even though the only thing they have in common is one hell of a song writter.

They never appeared on a song together before (or since) she did a few guest backing vocals on A kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste.

There is a third option.

See if you can take a guess from these clues..........

A person Meat HAS dueted with.

They are English.

They have something to flog right now................

Not got it?...............

Roger Daltry from The Who singing Bad Attitude 8)

Though I think they'll both have to play the part of the father these days :lmao:

mszee 09 Nov 2006 19:22

Think it might be Marion...

Although Bonnie Tyler showed up as a surprised guest on DE concert...

Hey, I like Marion, but she isn't a well known, and to bill her as a "SUPRISE SPECIAL GUEST" isn't really on.

Yeah, we know who she is, but the public don't.

You might as well let Joe Bloggs on stage and bill him as a suprise special guest.

I might streak across the stage with a Bat III poster stuck to my arse and say that I'M a suprise special guest :lmao: .

Would be a laugh shaking hands with the Queen in the lineup after the show

Oh, I think that's a good guess.

RadioMaster 09 Nov 2006 20:11

Nah, I wouldnt call someone singing and someone else playing guitar (these little bits from BfG) a duet.
And it says it´s a classical duet, I wouldnt call BfG a classic.

Bonnie Tyler is atm in a record contract as she is singing a duet together with german singer Matthias Reim, dont know if that may cause a problem...

lorenzoduke 10 Nov 2006 18:53

Anyone know what Tim will be doing?

Maybe Meat can do In The Land Of The Pig. After all, the lyrics do say '****** off', and you can't get much more English than that. Although it might finish them off in the Royal box...

Paradise with someone ghastly like Debra Stephens or something....I sure hope not.

I think they usually televise it the weekend after the show .. which would be 9/10 december .. If they're going to show it during the week it will be listed in the Radio Times which comes out 28 November; if at the weekend it will be in the one which comes out on 5 December.

Not sure what you mean by "one appearance". It's a long show and they normally screen it on TV just the once.

As to lip synching .. what an odd question .. when considering Meat as a stage performer. He was about the only person who DID sing live when he appeared in the Party in the Park show for the Prince's Trust a few years ago .. (which was commented on in the press reviews) .. always sings live at concerts .. This is a major live show where all performances are live, and which most artists consider an honour to be invited to appear in .. Of course he will! :) He doesn't like lip-synching and only does this when live performing is less than practical.

When Meat appears on stage he sings his ass off .. and I have no doubt he'll be singing his ass off at the RVS!!

Caryl

mikeloaf 12 Nov 2006 00:21

Bad for Good would be a good song for the RVP. Land of the pigs too. If he sing like he did at RAH, he will be the star of the show, at last!

meatloaf-unofficial 12 Nov 2006 13:39

They normally show it on a sunday evening - the week after it is recorded. Plus I think Meat will have a suprise up his sleeve, maybe pyrotenics etc.... and I rekon he might do one song from Bat 1, one from Bat 2 and 1 from Bat 3. You never know, I might be wrong - he might do more than 3 songs.

Great publicity though :-) and last think -

He will bring down the house!!!!

meatloaf-unofficial 22 Nov 2006 18:16

According to the website, the show will be on tv on Tuesday 12 December 2006 !

Aslo - Meat will sing one song from his new album adn one classic with a speacial duet - as you already knew this !

Finally - The RVP welcomes his first show here !

ROSIE 22 Nov 2006 18:27

Perhaps Brian May as his special guest... just a thought

Rosie

dukesofhazard 22 Nov 2006 18:43

Song from Bat 3 will probably be the new single - so probably BAAB, classic song with special guest probably Anything For Love or Paradise.

No idea who special guest would be, maybe Jack Black - to do BOOH?

MeatGrl1 22 Nov 2006 22:01

Just a little thought...

How about Tim And Meat's Rocky Horror Shop revisited...:??:

Meat would be up for that but I don't think Tim would be... DAMN!

At least BAAB will get some good publicity as the viewing figure's are normally really good for these show's.

I'm more upset than angry - I would absolutely love to hear a full live version of Blind as a Bat. Already means a lot to me, that one.

RadioMaster 02 Dec 2006 10:41

are the artists on that show usually playing live or playback?

CarylB 02 Dec 2006 11:05

I guess it depends on what they do .. comedians are normally live .. so are sketches with cameo performances from Soap stars, magicians, and acrobats:) .. and I've never seen a fire-eater lyp-synching .. lol

Musically, usually they have one or two acts which feature a group of artists from a current musical, who generally sing live using the orchestra at the RVS .. the remaining singers I think vary depending on whether they need their own backing band or not .. just as Meat is singing one song live but having to lipsynch the one which he knows demands his own band rather than the orchestra provided.

As I've only seen the RVS on TV, and there are so many acts following each other it's frankly hard to tell sometimes. I'm pretty sure the Beatles sang live, but that was many years ago, and of course each of them was considered a star in their own right. Shirley Bassey sang live .. but her songs are different and can be sung with the orchestra provided relatively easily .. just as Meat says Dead Ringer is one that doesn't need the NE to do it justice. Larry Hagman sang live .. know that because he dried completely and his mother had to come on and help him out!!

I can understand Meat's frustration and disappointment, but there are so many acts having to be managed through a very tight show (plus they all have to share dressing rooms). Traditionally most performers only had one very short segment .. 4 minutes or so (except for the main compere and the headliner) and if you blinked you'd miss them! Recently they've tended to give more time .. and at least we'll get to see Meat perform two songs :)

And he still carries the honour of being one of the few artists to perform live at the Prince's Party in the Park a few years back .. and then the sound equipment let him down.

Prince Charles clearly likes Meat .. he was I think the only artist invited to sit with the Prince in the audience at the Party in the Park. I'm sure the Prince will love seeing him in the RVS even if he only sings Dead Ringer live :) .. as will I of course :)

Yeah very upset now to be honest.
:(
Does anyone know if its just Paul thats not playing?
Is Randy playing too?
Hope so, that would make my day if Randy was. but would be even better if Paul was. But not to worry. Still got chance to see him next year.

I'm pretty sure there will be no Randy or John. I guess for the same reasons as no Paul. :(

Meat has already told us that none of the band are allowed to play at the RVP. Look here. I'm sure the band members are just as upset about it as Meat and ourselves but it was very good of Meat to take the trouble to let us know.

I've just got back from RVP and it was an entertaining evening but very long! The show lasted over 3 and a half hours.

Meat Loaf was on in the first half (although they could change the order for when it's televised next week). I thought his voice sounded very strong during DeadRinger (although I think Jamelia missed a couple of lines!).

There was a nice touch when Meat Loaf went towards the back of the stage to sing DeadRinger, as Kasim gave him a reassuring pat on the back as if to say that he was performing well!

There's a strict budget with RVP and after they get the artists they want or need they start trimming away, That's why you end up with Ken Dodd and not somebody who's any good. That's probably why the band wasn't allowed to play, plus they need to take down one set or performance and quickly put up another one.

Pud

Meat Loaf's part of the show was set in a bar and the introduction was that it was a bar that had seen better days so a band would not really have fit into that sort of scene. They had dancers during DeadRinger, plus there was the problem of not being able to play live.

I think all artists donate their time for free for this show as it is an event to raise money for the Artists Benevolent Fund.
