American Idol Finale

The American Idol Finale, (featuring Meat singing "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" with contestant Katherine McPhee), will be shown on ITV2 in the UK on Friday, 26th May 8-30 pm - 11.15 pm.

The show will be repeated on the following Sunday.

Diane

RSG 21 May 2006 04:12

In North America, its still Wed. or Thurs. correct?

Diane 21 May 2006 04:19

I've put it in the forum calendar. The last I heard it will be next Wednesday for North America. Perhaps one of our American members knows what time it will be on.

Diane

vrg 21 May 2006 05:15

I saw today in the TV Guide for next week that it will be on 8-10PM, Wednesday.

It is scheduled for ITV2 not ITV3 on all the listings

I hope that someone upload it to YouTube or something similar...

That's right. What's been frustrating is that there has not been one ounce of publicity about who is going to be in the finale, aside from the contestants (obviously). I can't remember if there was any advertising before the final contest night last year about the 2 guest bands who sang with Bo and Carrie. If it wasn't for Meat himself telling us, we wouldn't have had a clue that he would be on the Wednesday finale until tonight! We owe him a lot, as he has spared us a lot of last minute scrambling.

AI is presenting it as "a lot of surprises and surprising guests" or something like that...as if this will generate some kind of special interest for AI. Whoever is watching it...will watch it...and whoever doesn't know that their real idols will be on, will have no clue...very strange publicity strategy if you ask me. I am sure they will announce something today...but it appears to be a day late and a pound short...maybe AI just gearing itself to American public who will be watching today...those that actually will buy albums - that's what it's all about at the end of the day for AI.

Finally, this was found in today's The Mercury News (San Jose):

"...Taylor will be crowned the next American Idol tonight in a two-hour finale featuring rumored pairings of Meat Loaf with Katharine, Toni Braxton with Taylor, the return of this season's Idols, an appearance by season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken, and Chris teaming with Live for I Walk the Line."

mikeloaf 25 May 2006 02:26

It's not a popular show in the Uk I think due to the rift between Simon Cowell and Pete Waterman over the rights to the 'idol' name.

I am looking forward to hearing Meat sing this duet. Vocally I've no doubt he's the star of the show!

To clarify in the UK it's on ITV2 8:30pm to 9:20pm this Friday. So get the beer's in.

Really?
50 minutes just? With commercials that means time for 1 Meat Loaf song.

Jackoutofhell 25 May 2006 03:36

GREAT!

OKay, I must admit, it was pretty short, but for what was there, it was awesome! Meat performed perfectly, and they sang well together. Very exciting, but it only lasted about three minutes. The host mentioned his previous albums, and announced Bat 3 as being "bigger than the legend himself!"

WAY too short....but still...what an awesome performance! Meat looked amazing and sounded even better! He's grown a goatee, wearing his hair a bit longer (minus highlights it appears), awesome outfit (just like he described -including the necklace Pearl made for him). IMO, he held himself back a bit -probably a courtesy to McPhee....wouldn't want to see her get blown off the stage in front of 200 million viewers I suppose.

I guess I'll be one of the few who thought it was a mediocre performance at best. She wasn't bad and the chorus was pretty good but Meats voice was flat at the very start.

Pud

vrg 25 May 2006 06:05

It was indeed way too short. Meat looked great - love the beard - and settled in when Katherine joined the duet. I was amazed as to how she kept up, but I suspect he was holding back some. The arrangement was interesting, and you can get an inkling as to how he will tinker with it, probably with Patti, on tour. Meat put the drama into the stage action, and that was great to see. Just too, too short.

Lowlight: Meat Loaf. He wouldn’t have made it out of “Idol’s” Hollywood round with the performance he gave on Wednesday. Plus, the pairing with Katharine McPhee singing “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” was just plain wrong on every level. He looked and sounded like a dirty old man singing to the pretty young girl with whom he has no shot.

One thing I thought was interesting was that in all the other duets, the AI contestant took the stage first and then introduced the guest star in the middle of the song. In Meat's case, though, he took the stage first - after a nice little plug for Bat 3.

Nice job by Meat's publicist or whoever negotiated that little detail for him!

Sapphire Lady 25 May 2006 11:12

Saw some clips of it on GMTV this morning. We saw Dionne Warwick and Prince. No sign or mention of Meat though :(

Will just need to wait till tomorrow night to see it.

Yeah and those reviews can go where most of these reviews go: straight into the garbage bin. These reviewers are idiots ("my husband left the room" - how professional!), they write as if Meat needs to prove himself. They are biased no matter what people say. What a load of b......s.

Meat looked and sounded good in my opinion and this should be good advertisement for Bat 3 as so many people watch these shows.

Ross 25 May 2006 12:46

Ok I did not like this performance one bit - hope the recorded version is better than this.

Bart 25 May 2006 12:55

I am happy voor Loaf that he get this promotion. I feel sorry that he was dead nervous. I am proud of what he has done. But this perfomrance sucked. I have never seen a performance of him that sucked that much. O my god, I shamed every second I have watched it.

Rockette 25 May 2006 13:02

Having now had the benefit of seeing this twice for myself, here's my two cents.

My take on Idol shows is that the spotlight lies fairly and squarely on the upcoming artists. I felt Meat did not take his usual lead in the song because he was mindful of the need to promote Katherine's talent. I loved the rendition of this song (originally intended for Meat), but look forward to seeing how Meat and Patti handle it.

Screw the critics Meat, you've come up with another winner!

Bart 25 May 2006 13:06

what?
To promote Kath? He just couldn't sing. The first sentence is hilarious. He couldn't cope with the melody and the notes.

Rockette 25 May 2006 13:30

Are you on the right forum? I thought we were here to promote Meat, not bring him down.

Cut the man some slack, by his own admission, he was nervous. He was "live", performing a new song, with a singer he had never sung with before. I imagine rehearsals were not as extensive as Meat would have prefered too.

I think a lot of people like to spend time with negative views and believe me I'm am not attacking anyone in specific here as I really respect most boardmembers. I'm also not saying you shouldn't have an opinion but my view is this:
If you hate things so much, then move onto something you do like.
That rockman forum for example is laughable at times I find. A lot of posters there don't like Meat Loaf but yet they spend all their free time talking about him. Now does that make sense????? I think not. And yes I do respect Pud's view that Meat is associated with Steinman thus should be discussed but I just had a look right now: I count 12 threads. 2 are about interesting topics, the others are all about some idiot who has been banned and most of them are about slagging off Meat. I don't call that a proper Jim Steinman board.

RadioMaster 25 May 2006 13:49

Just watched it, here´s my opinion:
It was too short for the song, much to short. And, sure, the show was about KMcP, not about Meat, so he was just the sidekick.
Thatswhy You (or better I) cant really judge about his performance.

And beside:
The new style makes him look younger somehow, don´t You think?
Compare it to some parts of the MSO DVD and You´ll see what I mean.

But all in all it was a good promotion for him/Bat3.

This is a thread to discuss his performance on American Idol is it not? It isn't to promote him at all, and if someone has what they feel to be an honest opinion about his performance then like it or not, it should be aired.

As for Meat being nervous, yeah he might have been, but he's a professional and has been singing professionally on stage in front of thousands for over 30 years.

I hate to have to do it, but I'm siding with Bart on this.

These guys get paid to write negative stuff about American Idol since it is on a rival channel. If NBC produced it, that review would be completely different. The introduction to the article sets the tone and that is not a positive one according to me.

In MTV news today:

MTV: Did you know who Meat Loaf was?

McPhee: I found out a few weeks before the finale. I knew the name but didn't know what he looked like or anything. It was an interesting experience. He's definitely the theatrical rocker dude. I've had a lot of theatrical experience in my life because I went to school for musical theater, but he was on a whole different level. He warned me he goes full-out every time, and when we were rehearsing he was all in my face.

Jayd 25 May 2006 18:40

You could see that Meat was nervous as soon, as he walked on stage, and grabbed the mike stand. This was most probably his first performance of a song from Bat 3. The impression I get is, when Meat goes out onto stage live like that, I think he feels he has something to prove, when he doesn't. Negative reviews, and comments don't help a person, it only makes you more nervous. I know we can say, Meat performs to sell out crowds, and he has performed on TV before, but this is different. He is out there, singing with someone he has never sung with before, maybe just a few rehearsals. He is performing a song, which I very much doubt, he has rehearsed himself to sing live, as he would normally do. Also he does not want to take away the limelight of the person he is singing with, very hard, when you usually play to sell out concerts, where everyone has come to see you. There are a load of different factors. This was not one of Meat's best performances, I see that, but critical reviews don't help a person's confidence, last night was about that very beautiful young lady, and the other guy, sorry I don't usually watch AI, so not too familiar with the names, but I know where I am coming from. :D

Jackoutofhell 25 May 2006 18:41

Not perfect... but close. I'm glad the camera wasn't on Simon when he sang the first few notes, because they were way flat. He improved though.

amethyst 25 May 2006 19:27

I've just watched it and watched it again, and again. Meat Loaf was a little flat at the start, be it nerves or whatever, but after that he sounded fine.

The applause when he came on spoke volumes though!!

Well done Meat, cant wait for the full version on the album!!

P.S Oh, I must say, just watching it again, He definitely owned the stage, you can tell that for sure!

Some observations:

1. I am now looking forward to this song on Bat3 even more.
2. Meat started a little flat for like 3 notes. The rest was great.
3. He looks and sounds in great shape - very promising for what is to come!
4. Most of his songs are like 7 mins long - he didn't have a chance to get into this song really.
5. I agree that Meat was holding back, as it is really Kat's show. I bet once he starts doing shows etc this song will really kick donkey.

Also loved his new look!:mrgreen::oops:

AndrewG 25 May 2006 21:13

The "Baby, Baby" bit was great too. Wayy better than Celine IMO.

foundout 25 May 2006 22:23

so nice

It’s just my opinion.
I think the song was re-arranged not for meat, for her voise ,her tune. and the duet was for BATⅢ promotion in audition program.

And on 1st verse,I could heard that Meat has some wrong tempo. I think it was because of bad condition of Meat himself or TV mixing

Somehow, HE GOT IT GREAT!

It was a good peformance, and biginning of BatⅢ TV promotion.

For anyone interested, caught an interview w/ Kat McPhee today where she mentions Meat, among other things. http://www.thenakedwire.com/media/Foxnews5252006.mpg

It's a large file so takes a moment to download.

you have to give it to him he still has his ability to pull off a great song and make it even better.

I haven't seen it yet but the responses were as I expected, he was brilliant, his voice was poor...etc. The show isn't about Meat, it's a talent show for people who can't produce original material and so sing old songs, usually badly and hope to make millions in the future and the stupid consumer society throws money at them. I hope Meat made good money from it!

Promotion is a necessary evil. Meat often seems sensitive to critics and I hope he ignores critics of this 2 min performance, to me it's irrelevant, but necessary part of promotion.

Mick Loaf 26 May 2006 01:10

Just watched it and I thought Meat looked and sounded great!
I don't care what show he appears in, it's great just to get to see and hear him sing.
Well done Meat, and long may the appearances and performances continue!

wizardofodd 26 May 2006 01:32

this was a good performance just seemed weired with it being so short!!! i cant wait to Bat 3 and the song is awsome thats the first time i have heard it!!!!

Great comment in US Weekly on discussing what was to come for the Finale:

"...As for Kat making a duet with Meatloaf, I think it will be great. His music has that opera/rock feel that I think would suit Kat’s vocals. Look at the wonderful job Celine Dion did on one of Meatloaf’s songs."

I LOVE the last sentence.

...ya about meats performance on idol...i have been obsessed with idol all season and a huge fan of taylor and Kat and when i heard Meat was gunna be on the finale i like ran around my house screaming...so i watched the show with all my friends who r not meat fans and when he started..they laughed at him and at meat..i just dont think ppl who take the time to know meat and his music and his voice dont really understand it..the first few notes seemed off but as it went on it got better and better and the more i listen to it the more i like it

When you've only got 3 minutes to perform a song, you're not given much time to build up a rapport with the audience. I think on this occasion, it might have been better if Meat wasn't as Meaty as he usually is, he might have come across with the critics better. Just a random thought.

Bart 26 May 2006 11:18

I have an impulsive mind.
I have listened to it maybe 10 times. Okay, it is not so bad as I thought it was.
I have been thinking about this performance and the reasons for Meat for doing it.
We all know that he wanted to quit in 2003. Maybe he would do a few concerts every year but that''l be it.
We all know that somebody called him to do another album. Meat said yes, lets do it. The other one somehow for some reason turned his back to him and Meat was stuck with a record contract.
So he records songs. And he ahs to promote. it and along came this opportunity. He couldn't say no, that was out of the question. This was the chance to promote the damn thing. he was forced to do it wether he liked it or not. And that deserves courage. The guy has a lot of courage. And damn, he is brave and damn I feel so sorry for him. I hope the other one watched it and felt ashamed of hisself. Ashamed that HE was weak and that HE let Meat down and that it was HIS fault that Meat had to do this....alone! for 40 mio people and singing a song that was not his and for an audience that was not his.
