29. Surf's Up
This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic.
Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!! Surf's Up (9) I think this is the best song on this album. It's a fantastic ballad. I wonder that feeling breaks out of the music - step by step. The lyrics is following the music. The best line is: "I'm gonna give you what I'm hopin' you'll be givin' to me" The rhymes are tinkling, the music is stronger and stronger... My score: 9 Average: 8.52 (102.2/12) |
I agree with you, maybe the best song on the album.
Typical Jim song, great backing vocals on this track. It's a strong ballad with all Steinman parts, what makes it a good song. This version is offcourse better than Jim's own version. My Score: 8/9 |
Indeed a great song. The version from Jim STeinmans album is also great, and the "remix" of the song also. Very cool.
To quote Michel, a typicall Steinman song. A 8.7 |
I agree with you it's better tham Jim's version, but I'm missing the bazuki solo. Jim's version is so strange by bazuki... and good.

Feleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeena ...
|
Sorry R.! What?
Sometimes I don't understand you... |
:D Surfs Up is the song I would love to hear Meat sing live. At my meet and greet in 1999 at Wembly I even asked him if he could sing it for me!! But he told me sorry I cant!
Sigh those lyrics "were on the edge of forever and we are never gonna fail!" oh and of course "Surfs Up and sooooooo am I" Id die and go to heaven!!!!!!!! Thanks R! For telling me about this topic Ill shut up now! Hugs Feleena x |
Great Song. This album is the best of the three in the period 1983-1986.
Ik give the song a 8,5! Twan :) |
thankyou! I was wondering what it was, the bouzoki at the end is the best part of the JS version - at first I thought it was mandolin, but then knew it wasn't. JS' version is too long but I think the high vocals make it a bit better.
|
Jim's version is actually sung by Rory Dodd, who has a great voice and personally I'd love to see Jim do an album wiht him.
I probably prefer the Bad For Good version... well... depending on what day of the week it is changes my favourite version. Bohemian |
Quote:
What do you mean three songs from 1983 - 1986? Bohemian |
Bohemian, even I can read that he meanes that the album Bad Attitude is the of the three albums, Midnight, Bad, Blind.
But no offence! About the Jim and Meat version, I always think Meat's version is always better than Jims version, because Jim hasn't the voice to sing his own song. And no one can sing a Steinman-song like Meat can. About Surf's Up live, Meat did it on the Storytellers tour, but nobody has bootlegs from this tour. |
 A beautiful romantic song.
The music is slow but very powerful.Meat's voice is very powerful and full of emotion. The lyrics are very pleading("How Hard Do I Gotta' Try")and remind me of For Crying Out Loud. I agree that this song would sound awesome live. 9/10 Never gonna' fail. |
I love the song too, but every time I sing along, my englishness kicks in and I have to sing "How hard do I HAVE to try?"
|
that amazing winged beauty picture
white loaf whatever ur name is where can i get that picture of the winged angel on your profile? its beautiful
|
I have found it in the store of the mlukfc in the profile section. If you don't find it there you must search out of the sites of Michael Whelan. Maybe it is his picture.
R. could help you more... |
You'll find this picture (amongst others) in our avatar gallery.
However, you will need to register in order to go there. The link to the official Michael Wheelan website can be found in our links section on http://www.mlukfc.com/ . |
I don't understand anything. Meat was singing Surf's up and Nowhere Fast by Jim Steinman. Why didn't sing more songs by him to this album?
And another question! Was Meat's or Streets of Fire's version of Nowhere Fast before??? |
Special for Bohemian: I love this song very much.
Now I'm going to say something about the album (as a real Meat Loaf-fan, you know which album I'm takling about, so I called it just "the album as I did in my first post on this topic). The album is the best of three in the period 1983-1986. 8O Be aware!:Now Im gonna change and say something about the song (Surf's Up) again. I give the song a 8,5! I hope you'll understand what I mean! (Despite my English isn't my mother language and wasn't my favourite subject on school!) Twan |
Now, what should I say to this song? I don't need to say something. It's logical that only the highest score is right for this one!
10/10 |
What does it mean?
I love this song too but I have wondered for 8 years now what does "Surf's up" really means?
The lyrics in the refrain goes: How hard How hard How hard do I gotta try I want all of your love Surf's up I need it so bad Surf's up I need it so bad Surf's up and so am I I gotta give you some love Surf's up and so am I... How are you if you are "Surf's up"? Any englishman/woman here who can be kind enough and explain it to a dum swede  |
I'm not English but I think the feeling's on a surf (if you are a surfer) as same as what you feel with a girl...
|
Quote:
That is a good explanation it can mean that why didn't I think of that 8) Thank you very much for giving me that explanation :D |
But I can't believe it!
A surf and a girl??? |
How do you mean? Why can't you believe it?
|
Could you believe surfing's feeling is as same as a night with a girl's feeling?
|
I'm not a surfer but I can imagine there is a special rush of surfing and when being with a partner is also a rush so I can believe it is like that
|
Hmmm...
I'd like to learn surfing... |
Why? Because you don't have a partner to get that rush with feeling "Surf's up" with togehter?
|
Aaahhhh...
Good question. The surf seems far away... |
he he easier to find a partner then to Surf with :D
|
I haven't got sea...
|
Oh I see that is a problem if you're gonna surf.... Then get a partner instead and skip the surfing it is far better
|
Hmmmm, I'd have been curious to here how much better this track would've sounded if Steinman had produced it..as it is I'll give it a 8.5!
My Score: 8.5 |
I've really enjoyed JS lyrics with all the different levels of meanings that could be interprited. That is untill I heard this the first time on BFG. I think JS went to far with this one, too blatent. Still I was curious as too what I would think if the voice was singing it. Well here's my answer. ML is in fine form but it's not enough to save this Stienman song.
4/10 |
Surf's Up, is an excellent song for such a hard album. Oh My ROCKIN HEAVENS!!!!!!!! This song, is a 10 all the way. His voice, is amazing, I really can't believe it!! The music is Heavy with heart, his voice is amazing with heart. Surf's Up, i don't picture anything yet, but you know something, this is a beautiful SLAMMIN song. WoW, thats all i can say. GO MEAT!!!!!!!!!! Solo, what a nice touch.

Re: What does it mean?
Quote:
I've always understood that it means that he's "up" as well. Surf is up and so is he. And what this "up" means should be pretty obvious. On Jim Steinman fans tribute album "Nothing But a Merciless Night" there ist a cover sung by a woman. She sings "Surf's wet and so am I." :) I love this song, it's among my top five Steinsongs but I preger "Jim's" (Rory Dodd's) version of the song. I think his gentle beautiful voice suits better to this type of song, besides the whole production is so much _more_ than on the Meat's version. Other than that, I don't like the fact that Meat's version is faster than the original. In my opinion the only Meat cover that's significantly better than the original is Out of the Frying Pan. Meat: 8/10 Rory: 10/10 MjP2 |
this song is made for an up tempo disco version! Just like they have done with total eclipse of the heart. I think Jim was inspired by it, cause he made an up tempo 2 outta 3 for Bonnie. Surf's up needs an up tempo house disco rap version! With a big giant female voice : i've got the power!"
8) 8) |
I really love this song, the emotions are so powerful, you can't help being swept along by it (just like a really big wave! ).
Of the two versions, Meat's is definitely my favourite: no one can sing a Steinsong like Meat. His voice is so powerful and raw, that it almost makes me get up in sympathy   . All in all a rousing song, strong lyrics, great backing music (although I also wonder if Jim would have produced it better - I'm not sure), and such powerful emotion - classic Meat / Jim 8) . 10 out of 10! |
Great song guys and gals. I used to be confused about this song, thinking about doin the washing :D :D
|
One of my favourites (and I agree with the analogy made as to what is "up!!") I heard the JS version first so tend to prefer that. Great stuff.

Got it? back to topic: I LOOOOOVE this song! It sounds like an "Objects In The Frying Pan" hybrid! I wish I could hear it once live... 10/10 of course! |

How you know?
What doe sit mean: surf's up? I still don't understand? |
In Jim Steinmans own words.... Surfs Up is a "boner" song :D
I love the song, but Meat doesn't really do it justice on Bad Attitude, it lacks some of the passion and a touch of the innocence that is there on the Rory Dodd vocal on Bad For Good. It needs the real orchestrations rather than the synthed mid-80's sound. All in all 7/10 for Meats version - could do better. |
But he sings it to a girl: Surfs up and so am i. So what does that mean?

Let's try again: the surf is up, and a part of him too. Do you get it now, or do we need to whip out (pun intended) the E-word? :) |
10/10!!! :D :D :D

It's actually another song from Jim's NEVERLAND. Peter baptises Wendy into the pack - by the waters of the purple surf. I assume it was done very sexually, because of the lyrics. Jim originally intended "Took the Words" to be used for this scene - but he wrote another song.
|
yeah, i know that. Read it in Phenomenanonoanenoom of Excess.
I always thought it had to do with the beach and the waves or something like that, you know: surfing, surfboard. I am still not sure its all about having a b..er. |
Quote:
There're much less explicits lyrics on Meat's songs and you're stuck on that one?! What about Jumping The Gun? I am (almost) sure it ain't nothing to do with Flying Mouse's explanation... :lmao: |
It was also about Jim's explanation of the song in that book, the phenonanenoununonmenon... It was about Peter en Wendy at the beach. So never thought of the sex-thing.

I'm looking a bit naughty right now...   |
in this song you can clearly hear Jim Steinman vocal Abbility (hope i spell that right) or better to say his limitations, i know Steinman composed some great music but to hear him sing slow songs like this is Awful
musically the original version is better than Meat ones but i still prefer a good voice above a minor version i give all version an 7 |

oh my god i've been listen to Bat out of hell with Volume on Max way too much. my ears are going Bad |
On the free 7" / 45RPM single that came with my BFG LP, it says under "Surf's Up" "Rory Dodd: Featured Vocals". It's a public secret that Jim didn't sing "Surf's Up" and "Lost Boys and Golden Girls" on his record :)
And for going deaf: what's wrong with BOOH being the last thing you ever hear? :D |
Did Jim not sing thos songs?
|
Didn't I say that?
Didn't I say that? Did I tell you that he didn't? Cause it would have been a matter of fact! |
great song, the moment i heard it for the 1st time i liked it. Possibly the best song on the album! Great lyrics, music and brilliantly performed!

And Jonty gets it right, stunning song that just leaps out at ya from the album...vocals to die for!!!! |
I always read it like that too.
I really think this could be a show stopper live, though I guess we won't be hearing many (any?) non-Bat songs on the coming tour? |
Amazing song! 9/10
|
6. I like it, but not a patch on Steinman's original.

I love this song sooooooo much 10 outa 10!!
Feleena x |
Very romantic and sensual song. Thanks to all of you, I now understand the "surf's up" meaning. I didn't get it at all
I like the slow beginning of the song that suddenly goes crescendo. It put the stress on the passion that inhabits that man and on his desire, that are reflected in Meat's voice. 9/10 |
Transcendentally brilliant performance, sweeps you away like a huge ocean wave.
Do the marks people give get collated on 'The Standing'? If so, I better go back to the others, and give marks. For Surf's Up: 10 |

|
10/10. One of my all time favourites. As others have said, I'd love to hear Meat sing it live. Brings back fond memories, which I am keeping to myself!!
|
Yes, exactly. I am travelling all around the world. No time writting in forum. :(
|
Good to see you, WOH! Not sure what happened, but hope you're well!
|
What happened, where? Everything is right!
On forum? Just boring... Real life is better! :) |
This is definitely one of Meat's better songs. I just love it and will give it 10/10. Luv cx
