10. More Than You Deserve

This is the START OUT OF HELL & ARRIVE TO HEAVEN topic. Let's Go to Rock 'n' Roll!!!!!!!

More Than You Deserve (6)

I don't like this song. The music is too polite to me, like Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad. The lyrics not so good, perhaps interesting. The song is too long. I have got the original version from the musical. It's very interesting. The best version is on the Live At Nassau Colisseum CD, when Jim Steinman is performing it. It's very-very good.

The video is very funny on the end, when Meat's step into the fast-food restaurant. The girl says inside: "Oh, it's crazy!" ... yes, it's crazy.

My score: 6

Average: 8.30 (124.5/15)

Michel 27 Aug 2002 06:55

YOU DON't LIKE THIS SONG? HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?

I think it's a great song. And like White Of High said, you san compare it with Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad. That's why I like it so much. Especially the Storytellers version is great. I didn't expect that Meat did that song on Storytellers, but he did, and it sounded great. Also the live version of Agora's Ballroom is great. Great guitarsolo in the middle. Jim's version is good, only both of this Meat versions are better.

Score: 8/9

Jaymze 27 Aug 2002 08:17

It's also the first Steinman song Meat ever sang and if he didn't sing way back then we might not have Bat or Bat II so I think it deserves a lot of credit for that alone.

The Flying Mouse 28 Aug 2002 14:35

 Great song.
I don't you can compare it to Two Out Of Three.Where 2/3 is a (what's the word i'm looking for) real? love song,More Than You Deserve is one of Jim's black comedys. If I had to compare it to anything,it would have to be Paradise.
That's not to say that Deserve isn't a love song,it is,but it'a comletley different message and attitude.
The lyrics are great and the story shows off Jim's twisted sence of humor perfectly.
I love the way Meat sings it,all through the song he stays pretty much in the same key,but that key change for the last chorus is fantastic.
Score??????Tricky.Great song, but he has done better,so i'm going to be critical.
8+1/2 /10 Deserves nothing less.

Anonymous 29 Aug 2002 01:59

The song is good lyrically, the music is O.K. I don't love the 1981 version of it that well, but I love the 1973 RSO Records version and I also like the
version he did on "Meat Loaf Captures The World", it is a harder version.

Live at nassau Coliseum performed by Jim was pretty good though.

I give the 1973 version an 8/10
I give the 1977 Live version a 9/10
I give the 1981 version a 6/10

QT 11 Oct 2002 10:15

Very good song. The video of this song tells the story of this song very well!

Score: 8,5

jcmoorehead 22 Apr 2003 00:15

I like the song. The Video made me like it more because the end of the video is pretty funny

Meat: Uh can i have an uhh cup of coffee to go please
Girl:You want anything in it
Meat: No uhh just black

Ok well i found it funny!

8/10

Cloggy 22 Apr 2003 21:21

The original RSO versoin gets a 9/10

I really love this song because the chorus is so outrageous. I love the instrumental in the middle of the song, and the musical opening that Steinman again recycled on "The Future Ain't What It Used To Be". However, I have to say that I do prefer Jimmy's live version of this song.

Meat's version
9/10

Jimmy's live version
10/10

From the very first moment i love this song.
everything is great about it. The piano parts, the lyrics, the melody, the chorus, the guitars, the backing vocals, the humor. Meat's performs it very, very ,very well in spite of the different voice. Some 16 years ago my former girlfriend just loved this song.....
9/10.

mariella 23 Jul 2003 01:19

I love the song and the video.

One of the best, imo.

10/10

Quigmo 17 Sep 2003 06:33

One of the few ML songs that I have changed my opinion of after the first listen. I detest the Dead Ringer version. But after seeing and getting the Story tellers DVD I've had a big change of heart on this one.

Because of the Story tellers DVD it gets a respectable 8/10
which is eight times higher than I would give the Dead Ringer version.

White of High 18 Sep 2003 18:26

And have you ever heard the Jim Steinman live version from 1978?

Quigmo 18 Sep 2003 20:02

No, I must admit I have never heard that version.

PanicLord 18 Sep 2003 20:34

I really love this song, and the story behind it.

My favourite bit is the "hook" at the end, where he says

"Now I think I'm gonna have to leave you,
because I'm feeling much to weak to share,
and the pie is cut in too many pieces,
the flavour that I crave is no longer there..."

It's beautiful and also funny - perfect Steinman. I look forward to hearing the live version!

10!

Have fun.

TRex.

Jayd 18 Sep 2003 20:53

Great song and great video 9/10. :D

RSG 18 Nov 2003 02:48

It is a nice song, I wish it were a bit more harder, and by that I mean, less quiet. It has nice lyrics, only I don't know why he would tell buddy to take some more, if it was me I would throw a couple curves,

I would rate it an 8.5/10

Whaaaaah... very... precise... 8O

I love the song and the video - and I do love the way Meat acts on it!
Did anyone notice that all the guys on it look so weird? :? Except Meat of course who looks really really really goooood!

10/10

AndyK 08 Jan 2004 20:48

9/10 for all versions from the original version from the Musical, to the 1973 to the Jim live to the deadringer (although i'ts perhaps the weakest of the bunch) to the later live versions, it's a great song, with feeling ooozing out of every pore!

PanicLord 08 Jan 2004 23:07

Anyone know where I can get Jim or the 1973 version or live version from?

PLEASE?

White of High 09 Jan 2004 15:50

I think you can find here the live version by Jim:

The musical opening is also used in Jim's track for Bonnie Tyler "Rebel Without a Clue". I always felt that it sounded familiar, then upon listening to it (the other day) it hit me. Great song though. Love Jim's version.

rockfenris2005 16 Jan 2004 04:31

I love the instrumental Steinman plays in his live version - it totally throws the song into this crazy, compassionate and heart-turning grand piano opus. It always get to me, that's why I love it so much. And the concert version only has two verses. The other one (for Dead Ringer) wasn't written yet

RadioMaster 08 Jul 2006 12:39

Great!
Although I think that the way he did it on storytellers is even much better.

When the intro is starting as a common piano intro like many of this songs have, it´s average.
But then The high piano comes in then you see the difference, then you know that Jim is a genius.

I think I´m goona have to leave you, because I´m feeling much o weak to share.

Great song. The funniest song ever! I love peoples' reactions when I play this to them, and they hear the 'Two of my best friends' line, and then watch their jaw really hit the floor when the 'Group of my best briends' line hits them! :D

Didn't like it when I first heard it, then saw him perform it on the StoryTellers DVD. I listen to it with different ears now.

I know, so was I. :-)

03gills 13 Feb 2007 12:53

Decent tune, should've closed the album though methinks, has a left in the dark, two out of three vibe to it, would've been perfect with a full blown orchestra but time constraints at the time made that impossible, shame. For the version on dead ringer 7/10 for the potential i heard on storytellers 10/10.

florence75015 01 Sep 2009 07:21

I like Meat's passionate way of singing this song, the power of his voice and the video clip too. His version on Storytellers is full of emotion, with more softness in his voice.

9/10

RadioMaster 01 Sep 2009 08:21

makes you think how great a dead ringer live-unplugged album would sound...

glockenspiel 01 Sep 2009 14:06

The pre-Bat 70's recording of it works best for me (it keeps a sense of yoiuthful naivety to it).

Wario 01 Sep 2009 15:40

Best version out there's the version from 1972 with meat at the public theater soundboard

8/10 for teh album version
2/10 Jim's version (Horrible)
9.5/10 Public Theater version

RadioMaster 01 Sep 2009 19:07

The 73 single never really did it for me, I dont think that country touch works on such a dramatic song. It's still interesting to hear the different stages this song went through.

i dunno if you were talking about what i said but i mean the soundboard from 1972 the sound tech recorded (Where the second verse is omitted). but yea i agree with what you mean about the 73 single.

RadioMaster 01 Sep 2009 19:17

dont think that's a soundboard recording, but I could be wrong

Its the same quality as that rocky horror Broadway show with meat. Its eitehr soundboard or someone with a good tape recorder for 1972

RadioMaster 01 Sep 2009 19:39

cant comment on that one, never heard a rocky horror bootleg from broadway
